This book is very enlightening for those new to Bonsai gardening. I very much enjoyed the short history of the art of Bonsai gardening, before getting to the meat of the book. The basic of caring for a Bonsai tree are explained clearly in an informative, friendly style which I found easy to understand. The author's enthusiasm for the topic is obvious, and I found this a very helpful, instructive and enjoyable book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Easy to read bonsai survival guide 22 juin 2012

This is a great book for anyone looking to get into bonsai gardening at the beginning.

I guess a lot of people get a new bonsai and don't do too well with it because they don't know the specific steps or survival strategies to start with their new tree. And as a raw beginner, when I look at some of the bigger books, it all looks a little too daunting. Not only is the information in this book just what any bonsai beginner with enthusiasm, a tree and little to no actual knowledge needs, it is laid out in a really simple to follow step by step plan. What it allows you to do is basically keep your tree alive while you figure out and learn the intricacies of bonsai.

The book starts off with a mercifully brief history of the subject. Don't get me wrong, I like history as much as the next guy, but I agree with the author when she says that while history is not necessary to grow bonsai it can deepen your appreciation for the topic. In any case I appreciated the author keeping it short, and I must say interesting, unlike many authors who use topics like this to simply "pad" their books unnecessarily.

From there the book goes into the 7 steps of keeping your new bonsai alive. Each of these steps is laid out in a logical order with plenty of tips and advice to help with your bonsai tree. While the book is relatively small and easy to read in comparison to some of the encyclopaedia style books I have seen, it crams a huge amount of specific detail into each of the 7 steps.

It's hard to imagine anyone with a new tree having any questions that would not be covered in this book. For example in the section on watering; when to water, when not to water, how much water, what to do if you over water it, and even the type of water you use, are covered in great detail and in a very easy to read & understand style.

Other essential bonsai survival topics covered in the book such as environment, feeding & grooming are covered equally as well and in depth. I think it's safe to say that you will know what to do, as well as what not to do and why you're doing it, by the time you finish reading this book.

An excellent, easy to read guide that delivers on the promise of its title.

This book is just what I needed when I bought a bonsai (don't ask) and I wasn't really interested in all the glory details - I just wanted to know how do I keep it alive :) The book is just what I like about these kind of how-to books: short but informative enough so you get all the basics right.

I bought this book because it was inexpensive and I had just bought a bonsai tree (a ficus), and I needed to know what I had to do to keep it alive. This book was good because it dealt in info that was intended to do just that. It didn't go into great detail, but that's not the purpose of this book, I guess. So I was happy with it.

For me, there's a particular fascination with Bonsai Trees. Where I reside in Western Canada, there's an active Bonsai Club who, on occasion, display their many prize tree plantings in Malls, Nurseries, Fall Fairs, etc. It's no surprise that I, as well, have a keen interest with the many variety and types of Bonsai Trees that folks nurture (even though, as yet, I've not delved into this fun-gardening arena). I found this author's well-described book chock full of info I hadn't really thought about before. Loads of great tips. Perhaps lacking, but not critical, are photos of various Bonsai Trees in both outdoor and indoor settings.

Although I've had a keen interest in gardening for most of my life, I've never owned a bonsai tree, but now, having read this very helpful book, I'm inspired to turn my hand and have a go. The author explains in an easy to understand way how a novice can care for a bonsai tree, minimising the likelihood of killing it, which is a good thing, since you hear of so many beginners actually doing that! I would recommend "Help! Someone Just Gave Me a Bonsai Tree" to anyone interested in getting a bonsai tree for the first time (or even the second time if they killed the first one..)!
