My only very minor quibble is the sound pad does not have a way to go directly to a certain number; you have to go 1, 2, 3, 4, etc if you want to reach number 130 (which is the Falcon's hyperdrive engines failing in TESB). But once you start reading this book you probably won't stop until the end; yes, it's THAT GOOD. Get it and prepare to hear the Saga with new appreciation and understanding.
I wasn't planning on buying this book originally, but when I came across it at a major book seller's store, I was impressed (and intrigued) with its presentation. So much so, that I went ahead and purchased it. Of course, Amazon has the best prizes AND with free shipping! You just can't go wrong :)
The book contains informative and historical accounts of what, where, and how these legendary sounds came into existence from sound engineer/editor Ben Burtt. He recounts what his youth was like and how he was engaged with sounds as a young boy, how this enthusiasm flourished during his time at USC and on.
Each sound is described in detail in regards to its creation. What's more, the sounds are available to listen to with the included sound device that the book comes with. Most of the sounds, if not all, are the COMPLETE, uncut versions. Of note is that the sound module's speaker is very clear, and its volume can be easily adjusted via buttons at the top; it can go from very soft to very loud. Not only that, but the clarity of the speaker took be aback; I don't think one can find a more clearer rendition of this sounds anywhere! There is no fuzziness, whistles, pops, etc. to these.
You have the choice of either going through the book in sequence with the sounds, or simply jumping to the desired sound by scrolling through its sound bank - very easy!
All in all, I am enjoying this book for its connection to the saga that I love and for its technical information of the creation of these so-famous sounds, sounds that I grew up with.
The problem is that the sound player's display on my copy stopped working after about a week. Changing batteries didn't help. The sounds still played, but that doesn't do you much good if you can't read the display to find the sound effect you're looking for. I'd write this off as a fluke and just ask for an exchange, but reading several reviews here and elsewhere, it seems that I'm not the only one who has had this exact problem. I'm going to ask for a refund rather than risk getting another defective copy.
BUYER BEWARE. This is a faulty product that will be virtually useless if you experience the persistent problem that a number of us have encountered.
