Doch beide zusammen? Gott allein wußte, was dann passieren würde. Englisch: 2-CD DigiPac (6-plated) with 32-page booklet, 39 tracks. Playing time approx. 124 mns. At long last here are the original session tapes that produced Jerry Lee Lewis' 1974 'Southern Roots' LP. Produced by Huey Meaux, a fellow Louisiana wildman, the final results reveal what happens when two fiery, free-spirited forces lock horns in the studio. Meaux had just gotten out of prison and had a reputation you wouldn't want in your family tree. Separately, Meaux and Lewis each spelled trouble in a big way and could be impossible to work with. Together? God knows what would happen. The results could be an utter disaster or a stroke of genius. As Meaux later observed, "I knew Jerry and I would fight, but in the end we'd come out with the record. We fought, but we delivered." For three days in September, 1973 Jerry Lee Lewis and Huey Meaux went at it, and each other. Listen as Jerry Lee is turned loose in the studio by a producer who did try to rein in Jerry's ego. In fact, Meaux did everything he could to feed it. That ego is nowhere more evident than on Jerry's version of the Percy Sledge 1966 hit, When A Man Loves A Woman, which Jerry turns into a sermon on war between the sexes. Jerry and Huey cut mostly southern music soul, country, R&B and a touch of swamp pop. They even included a surprisingly impassioned version of Johnny Ray's 1952 hit record, Cry. Little did we know that there was supposed to be a second 'Southern Roots' album. Only ten tracks ever appeared o

HASH(0x9b459ca8) étoiles sur 5 This is genuine Jerry Lee (recorded 40 years ago) that should not be missed 7 octobre 2013

In late 1973 comfortable sameness was something associated with the likes of Engelbert Humperdinck (ridiculous stolen name notwithstanding) and should not have been with the wild man of '50s rock and roll, Jerry Lee Lewis; yet that is what Jerry Lee's right turn into straight country music six years earlier was gradually becoming. A shake-up was badly needed and was bound to happen when two Louisiana wild men were paired together in the studio: the Killer Jerry Lee and the Crazy Cajun producing genius Huey P. Meaux, who was fresh out of the penitentiary. It would have been very entertaining to hear how these two interacted in the studio...Wait a minute! Disc Two gives us a whole disc of this - along with outtakes and alternate versions - and it's priceless! The two are like two feisty peas in a musical pod, addressing each other by the made-up Cajun surnames Boudreau and Thibodeaux. At one point they can only laugh when their dueling extreme Louisiana drawls become too thick for the other to comprehend. A particularly fascinating moment has Jerry Lee getting a Meaux lesson on how to play "When a Man Loves a Woman." The sessions took place in Memphis (with a large number of local luminaries participating, including a bunch of Stax all-stars, such as Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn, as well as the Memphis Horns) and Houston, and they produced twice as many tracks as were going to appear on the final "Southern Roots" LP. Of the eight originally unissued ones (that were subsequently lost then found), there is one stone masterpiece in my opinion, which I think is the high point of the entire set: Lewis's four-minute, nearly completely straight (there are a couple of de rigueur self-referential "Jerry Lee"'s tossed in) take on Slim Harpo's "Rainin' in My Heart," with a full and drop-dead gorgeous Meaux arrangement, including chorus. This is deep-as-it-gets Louisiana soul.

The actual released album features a terrific mix of Southern sixties soul (Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming" and a brilliantly uninhibited and playful take on Roscoe Gordon's "Just a Little Bit," as only Jerry Lee could do it); a pair of classic fifties oldies (Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" and Johnny Fuller's "Haunted House"); Southern rock (Doug Sahm's "Revolutionary Man"; a couple of country songs (including a fine version of "Big Blue Diamond," a minor hit for Jacky Ward the previous year); and a closing New Orleans gospel number ("That Old Bourbon Street Church") which is stunningly performed.

Saving the leadoff track and A-side single for last, since it was very likely what torpedoed this LP's chances for success from the start, we have the notorious Mark Vickery-penned rocking original, "Meat Man." It's in the tradition of old blues and R&B double-entendre songs, but early in the year 1974 - a year when John Denver was topping both the pop and country charts with mind-numbing blandness - they kissed any chance of radio airplay goodbye, as "Meat Man" was just not going to cut it (Ouch!) in the marketplace. Clearly (with 40 years of hindsight), "Rainin' in My Heart" should have been on the issued album and its lead single.

This is a deluxe Bear Family product, with sterling sound mastering and excellent comprehensive Hank Davis liner notes, plus photos and a thorough discography.

I also highly recommend (with five stars) the recent BGO Jerry Lee two-fer, "The Return of Rock/Soul My Way" (1965/1967), the excellent precursors to this album, from just before he turned to country music.

In 1974 Jerry Lee Lewis released "SOUTHERN ROOTS" and it was met with indifference by critics and the record-buying public alike, As the years passed "SOUTHERN ROOTS" acheived cult status especially with the song "MEAT MAN" which raised quite a few eyebrows because of it's sexual conatations. Now, almost 40 years later, Bear Family has released "SOUTHERN ROOTS- THE ORIGINAL SESSIONS" ON 2 CDS.
CD1 contains all the material found on the original LP along with other tracks recorded at the session.but not included on the LP.
CD 2 is what real treasures are made of. One can say that the alternate versions found on cd2 are superior to the ones on cd1.
The studio patter included is priceless and puts the listener in the studio at the time of these recordings. Bear Family has again put together a marvellous reissue of Jerry Lee Lewis' Souhern Roots and provides addional material that otherwise would be lost to us. Congratulations Bear Family for this collection of outakes and studio banter because these are essential listeneng to any Jerry Lee Lewis fan.

This CD from Bear Family, is the best version of this album ever available. The sound is so clear, and the sound stage and seperation, are unbelievable. It sounds like it was recorded today rather than almost 40 years ago. Jerry Lee and the piano, sound like they are jumping out of your headphones or speakers. This is so much better then the original LP that had only 10 tracks. I remember how good the music was, but how muddy the LP sounded. What a difference with this CD set. Just the first CD is worth the price of admission. Although this is a studio recording, it has the feel of a live event. There was a CD version of this album, but the sound was nothing like this. This is a must have for any Jerry Lee fan.

Another Bear Family reissue... Quality is their second name...
At least, a "Southern Roots" album with enchanced sound... And great liner notes...

However, this is not a "Complete" session album. A song is missing (Haunted House - Long Version). It's one of my favourites, and that's why I put a four star raiting...
