Présentation de l'éditeur

“Thank you so much for doing this book!” - Carlos Santana

“This (“Power, Passion and Beauty”) is a great book!” - Chick Corea

“I was riveted by “Power, Passion and Beauty,” even though I knew the incendiary and brief history of the band, probably because it was so inspiring to hear how everyone who ever heard or was associated with the band was changed forever, not just by the power and originality of the music, but as if by something more spiritually fueled. This music was life-changing for all of us who heard it, and for all music which followed and continues to emerge from Mahavishnu's long shadow. Walter is to be eternally thanked for stoking the Flame.” - Christopher O’Riley, noted musician and host of America’s National Public Radio and Television’s “From The Top.”

"Walter Kolosky is clearly the foremost authority on the most important and powerful jazz-rock group of all time, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. With its enthralling interviews and insight, Kolosky's "Power, Passion and Beauty" details the storied history and influence of this epic band in a book that's as fun to read as it is fascinating. "Power, Passion and Beauty" is a must-have for music fans seeking a deeper understanding of the origins of the jazz-rock movement, and the greatest band the genre has ever known." - Rich Murray, The Guitar Channel

“Walter Kolosky has made the definitive tome on Mahavishnu Orchestra even more expansive and engaging. With fresh perspectives, sharper details, and new interviews, this eBook is a must-have for avid Mahavishnu and John McLaughlin fans. For those of you that were there, the book provides great insight into your fond memories. For those who know the band solely through recordings, this book gets you as close as you can to the alchemy that took place onstage and in the studio.” - Anil Prasad, Innerviews (The web’s first and longest-running music magazine)

2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the tumultuous break-up of the greatest band that ever was, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The group, founded by British guitarist John McLaughlin, was the first to fuse jazz, rock and world music into critical and commercial success. In a remarkable feat, its pure instrumental albums were able to find their way into the Top 20 of the Billboard rock charts. The Special Edition eBook “Power, Passion and Beauty - The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra” is the updated version of Walter Kolosky’s critically acclaimed work first published in 2006. Many have called that book “The Bible” of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the jazz-rock fusion movement. The Special Edition eBook is brand new to those who have not read the original printed version of this riveting story. For those that have, however, many new anecdotes, insights, opinions, and an extra chapter updating the story of Mahavishnu have been added. The list of those exclusively sharing their views and memories of Mahavishnu for the original book was staggering. Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Pat Metheny, Sir George Martin, Jeff Beck, all of the original Mahavishnu members and almost 150 other music giants helped tell the Mahavishnu tale. This time around, Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Steve Howe, Carmine Appice, and many other noted artists, producers, audio engineers and spiritual travelers add to the legend that is the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The Special Edition eBook “Power, Passion and Beauty” also has dedicated web pages that will offer more rare images, news and information such as the most extensive gig list ever compiled for the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Power, Passion And Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mavavishnu Orchestra : The Greatest Band that ever was

A ton of information on one of the most influential music groups since the Beatles. It was since I heard Frank Zappa for the first time that I'd began collecting instrumental albums only. Rock started to bore me, and seemed to be going nowhere. For some reason I'd never be able to catch the lyrics anyway - unless they were on linar notes. 'The Inner Mounting Flame' grabbed me by the throat, and told me "....listen; there's a world of music you know nothing of, and it starts here." Of course, I went on to listening to Miles, Coltraine and the greats, but Mc Lauchglin and Mahavishnu Mark I were the gateway to a universe of music which I was going to fall passionately in love with.

This book is so good because of the paucity of information from behind the scenes which followed all Mahavishnu incarnations. Kolosky gives us the inside skinny, and for me I found it an invaluable reference work to find source material, and even YouTube clips I'd never heard of. I knew Mahavishnu Mk I were loud, but it was Kolosky and some YouTube clips I'd not seen before which gave me a clue on exactly how loud they must have been. I would have gladly sacrificed some hearing just to see that lineup, but was eventually most impressed to see Mahavishnu Mk II 3 times - Narada Walden did a 48 minute drum solo on one evening!!!

This is a great read for those who love Mc Laughlin's Mahaviishnu work. It brings disparate work together that the casual reader would probably not find. Koloski's enthusiasm carries the book at a bouncing pace. A great read at a great price - as current material you''ll get from a 2013 release!

From the first time I heard MO on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert so many years ago until now I've been hooked. I have followed each member's career and personal life as much as I could. John is my absolute favorite musician of all time. Billy, Jan, Jerry, and Rick are are every bit as important to me in so many ways as to be countless. To say the music spoke to me then and still does now is true. To read quotes from others who feel the same as me is always exciting. To hear my own thoughts expressed more eloquently than is possible for me is humbling. The Mahavishnu Orchestra music has been, is and always will be a part of my life. This music was "instrumental" (no pun intended) in helping me form my spiritual views as well as being pleasant for ME to listen to, although I've managed to alienate a few folks by listening to it. Oh, well... their loss...LOL... Anyhow, it was a wonderful read and very informative and interesting to me.

I just recently got into the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 2000. A friend of mine let me hear "Dream" from the Lost Trident Sessions, and I was instantly hooked. The musicianship was just awe inspiring, and I couldnt believe that people could play instruments like that. I have been wanting to read about the band since that time, so I was instantly excited when I found this on Amazon. The one thing that sold me was that Rick Laird gave the book glowing reviews. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Walter Kolosky did a great job researching information. I also liked the fact that he included quotes from other musicians who expressed their admiration for the band. I didnt have much respect for the second Mahavishnu lineup, until I read this book. Ralphe Armstrong, Narada Michael Walden, and Stu Goldberg were just as potent as the original lineup. I also have the utmost respect for Rick Laird, because he kept things together while McLaughlin, Cobham, Hammer, and Goodman were flying all over the place with their playing. The only issue I have is that Miles Out from Inner Worlds was the author's worst Mahavishnu Orchestra song, I beg to differ. I would like One Word to be played at my funeral though LOL If you are a Mahavishnu Orchestra fan, buy this book. You will find yourself going to it several times to re read certain areas, I guarantee you.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Essential Read on a Great Band 15 janvier 2007

Walter Kolosky does a terrific job with this book, leaving no stone unturned. All former members of the Mahavishnu Orchestra contribute interviews for the book - mostly candid, plus there are plenty of guest quotes including members of other noted bands and the latter incarnations of the MO. There's plenty of history here - pre band, band and post-band. There's also a good amount of musical analysis and the book interacts with a website - so the work is dynamic and takes advantage of the modern era in technology.

The book is a quick read and entertaining; it's the kind of book you leave laying around and pick up repeatedly and reread over and over. The impact of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra is made clear and there are great stories about the bands that the MO wound up opening up for or co-headlining with. Once you've heard the music of the MO you will feel sympathy for these other bands.

I recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of the MO or for anyone who is interested in music.

I have heavy praise for Walter for putting this book together; the story had to be told and he stepped up. It is clearly the work of an educated fan of the band. I felt like a got a real feel for the personalities of all the musicians in the original band, and that's helped me to understand how things imploded for them.

I would give the book 4 1/2 stars if I could. Some of the quotes from the "guest musicians" are kind of self-gratifying and not really essential to the story - they don't add anything important. Instead of focusing wholeheartedly on Mahavishnu we get to read egoed out stories by people like Steve Lukather and a couple others. But it's a small part of the book, still entertaining and says more about the "quotees". I would have loved to see the members go through the records track by track and mention their recollections - but I'm sure Walter probably just felt fortunate to get the band members inputs on the book, so I may be asking too much!
