Présentation de l'éditeur

Now in Paperback! Teaching voice and vocal performance is by nature a subjective pursuit. This is the first book in the field of vocal pedagogy that draws on the brilliance and combined experience represented by an elite group of exemplary voice teachers. This research study and resulting book does not promote one teacher's perspective, nor does it promote one particular approach, but instead distills the best from the best, presenting nearly 30 quoted interviews from teachers of note. 'How do the nation's most outstanding voice teachers teach?' The end result is the first book of its kind, based on solid qualitative research design and methodology, written in a lively, understandable and user-friendly way that provides a fascinating survey of comparative pedagogy. Each chapter is arranged in a question and answer format, presenting the question first, then listing the response of each vocal instructor interviewed. Voice teachers offer valuable insight into their teaching philosophies, the kinds of auxiliary training they recommend to their students, and how they structure their lessons. Astute quotes and strategies about posture, breathing, tonal resonance, diction, registration and tension are based on years of professional teaching. A glossary containing definitions, voice performance and pedagogy terminology, and idioms characteristic of the profession is also included. A quick and handy reference for the studio teacher, this book would also serve as a text for vocal pedagogy courses or a supplement for physiology and vocal mechanics. For teachers and students of singing, music educators, musical theatre performers and anyone who aspires to be an outstanding teacher.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A terrific survey of America's Master Teachers 10 juillet 2003

This collection of interviews is formatted well, offering specific concepts of vocal training in a concise and easily accessible way. It is wonderful to see the many approaches taken by some of these legendary teachers. The teachers represent themselves with humor and wit, and offer insightful and compassionate glimpses into their own pedagogies as well as the world of professional singing.
Most of the teachers in this book are Master Teachers who have had many students go on to international performing careers. Among them are some legends of the teaching field, including Helen Hodam, Shirlee Emmons and Richard Miller. Some have published on their own, including Emmons and Miller, and most of them are still active teachers, either in the University setting, or of professional singers.
i'd recommend this to any voice teacher as an invaluable book of ideas and new approaches, and to intermediate and advanced students for the professional advice, practical glimpse at what sort of teachers they should be looking for, and for the sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious anecdotes the teachers tell.

Interesting concept. Enjoyed it very much. Some chapters I found more exciting than others - eg Vocal Concepts. Would have liked more detail there. Particularly enjoyed Marvin Keenze's contributions. Also noted a few of the teachers have now passed on, so it is great to have their wisdom immortalised in writing.

Thank you for this, Elizabeth! Fascinating reading! Contributions from a wonderful group of teachers, organized by topic so it's easy to use,and the perfect neutral position from the author. And it's so fulfilling to see that the well-known teachers do some things the same way I do!
