Présentation de l'éditeur

Whizz, gooey, pink champagne, base: the recreational and pharmacological use of ''Speed'', from Amphetamine Sulphate to Crystal Meth is a cultural habit which has existed since the early 1900s. Although considered a cheap and somewhat filthy habit, amphetamines have tempted an array of celebrities, including Elvis Presley, Truman Capote, The Beatles, Jack Kerouac, Johnny Cash, JFK and Adolf Hitler: All were at some point - to be blunt - speedfreaks. SPEED-SPEED-SPEEDFREAK traces the cultural and criminal use of amphetamine and its unholy growth.

This book is a really fun, captivating, fast read that gives great insight into amphetamines (like Dexedrine, meth, XTC) that can't be found on websites. The main problem is that the book (at least the Kindle version) is riddled front to back with (fairly minor) grammatical errors (ex: he said 'know' instead of 'known' at least 6 or 8 times in one of the chapters). Also, some statistics should have references - take Ch. 8 for example where the author states biker meth from phenylacetone (P-2-P) averaged 30% purity at best, where the new isomer of meth from ephedrine averaged 60% purity....he totally pulled those numbers out of his ass....nonetheless, I recommend this book for anyone with an interest the history & background of the all-American-drug: amphetamine.

If you want something interesting to read, though don't care to get too much into depth, this is perfect. It is definitely a fast history, mostly about amphetamine use, they skim the surface of the pharmakonetic side of it, which was disappointing. You'll probably learn some interesting things that you didn't know.

I've never read any Mick Farren before, but that changes now. This book was amazingly entertaining, and informative. Mr. Farren has a brilliantly fluid style of writing that never gets too heavy handed. Buy this book.

This text is OK in terms of the surface facts of speed -- providing (as the title announces) "a fast history" of how speed surfaced and proliferted at certain interims, its role in various subcultures. These facts, though, do not convey the truth of speed. This book won't be of much use to anyone wanting to understand the personal reality of the drug -- how it affects and takes over the user's metabolism, mindset, perceptual style, tastes, behavior, choices, ability to function in the "real" world. A few more in-depth, first-hand, non-moralistic accounts of that side of speed usage are needed in order to get a feel for the whole story of speed -- not just the facts (answers on a multiple-choice quiz). Speed is insidious -- it elevates you, makes you feel invicible, golden, eminently capable and can-do and terribly, terribly interesting and interactive, but for every bright inch gained in that way, you pay a dark price. Speed takes over your life, starts to drive your bus (instead of you driving it). It becomes the center around which you circle, you becoming less and less capable -- and/or willing -- to function without it. Continued usage inevitably precipitates a downward spiral of increasingly bad choices that affect not only you, but anyone in your life. It's not pretty, it always ends badly. What is sorely needed is a treatment of the subject that sympathetically intereweaves facts with an array of first-hand, non-moralistic, non-preachy accounts of the immediate reality of speed usage. This book stops well short of that and, to be fair, it's not meant to convey that. As the title notes, it's "a fast history."
