Présentation de l'éditeur

The renowned Indian sage Ramana Maharshi is beloved by Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Taoists alike for the inspirational power of his teachings, which transcend all religious differences. Here is a collection of Sri Ramana's instructions and discourses culled from three works: Who Am I?, Spiritual Instructions, and Maharshi's Gospel. These teachings are arranged by topics such as work and renunciation, silence and solitude, peace and happiness, and the discipline of self-inquiry. Reading this book, presented in question-and-answer format, evokes the feeling of being with this outstanding teacher at one of his intimate teaching sessions.

Biographie de l'auteur

Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) was one of the greatest spiritual teachers of modern-day India. At the age of seventeen he attained a profound experience of the true Self. After some years of silent seclusion he finally began to reply to the questions put to him by spiritual seekers all over the world. Though he wrote little, his many conversations and verbal teachings were recorded by followers.

Good content, but difficult for readers to get the big picture. Due to the fragmentary nature of being excepts from numerous talks, the book comes across as a collection of somewhat authoritarian assertions by a revered guru, rather than persuasive, systematic explanations. I would recommend it only to people with a good background on non-dual vedanta.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best introductory book on Sri Ramana 14 mars 2014

This book is by far the best introductory book on Sri Ramana's teachings. The contents are in Question and Answer format. After reading this book, most readers would want a practical book which puts Sri Ramana's teachings together in a logical and practical format and also would want to start practicing self-enquiry. For them I recommend the book 'Path of Sri Ramana, Part I' by Sri Sadhu Om. (Sri Sadhu Om is a direct disciple of Sri Ramana and also the closest associate of Sri Ramana's foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar). 'Path of Sri Ramana, part one' is by far the best practical book on Ramana's teachings. It walks you through the logic behind self-enquiry step-by-step and then, in the final chapter, describes the technique of self-enquiry. You should be able to start practicing after reading this book.

To those who want to read the original works of Sri Ramana with excellent commentary, I recommend the following books:

1. Upadesa Undiyar of Bhagavan Sri Ramana: "The Song of Siva". By Sri Sadhu Om and Michael James. Second edition, published 2004 by Sri Ramana Kshetra - Kanvashrama Trust. This book contains the thirty verses which are the essence of Sri Ramana's teachings. The book contains original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation of the entire verse. All verses also have excellent explanatory notes.

2. Sri Arunachala Stuti Panchakam: Commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2007, Published by Kanvashrama Trust, Tiruvannamalai - 606 603: This book contains the five songs sung by Sri Ramana in praise of Sri Arunachala (the name given to God in Thiruvannamalai). The book has the original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation. Some verses also have explanatory notes by Sri Sadhu Om.

3. Sri Ramanopadesa Noonmalai: Commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2007. Published by Kanvashrama Trust, Tiruvannamalai - 606 603: This book contains the philosophical writings of Sri Ramana (excluding the Upadesa Undiyar, which is contained in book # 1 above). It consists of the original Tamil verses, word for word English translation, followed by a running translation. Almost all verses also have commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. Commentaries are the very best available.

4. Guru Vachaka Kovai: by Sri Muruganar, Translation and commentary by Sri Sadhu Om. 2013 (Second edition). Published by Sri Arunachala Ramana Nilayam. Guru Vachaka Kovai is the most comprehensive and most authentic collection of Sri Ramana's teachings. (There are close to 1300 verses!) The verses in this book were recorded by his foremost disciple, Sri Muruganar, and thoroughly reviewed by Sri Ramana himself. The Maharishi also added some new verses to this collection. Many verses have commentary by either Sri Muruganar or Sri Sadhu Om.

However, if you want only one single follow up book to 'The spiritual teaching of Ramana Maharshi', then that would be 'Path of Sri Ramana, Part I' by Sri Sadhu Om.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A man of amazing insight into our essence 11 octobre 2015

A man of amazing insight into our essence. He with seeming effortlessness explains who we are and who we are not directly and with metaphor. I know that I will be reading this book from cover to cover, a day at a time, for more than one cycle. I have a feeling that each new reading will open something new, or maybe soften something old that is not really working for me.

While reading other works of Ramana, such as Talks, this is the best I have read as a succinct overview of his Teaching, and of Advaita (NonDuality). Each segment is an introduction to one vital aspect of the over-all Teaching, and each segment brief enough to be read in a matter of minutes. Reading Ramana is like sitting in the Presence of True Holiness: the spirit through the writings, that of Ramana and others like him, enhacing the wisdom and impressing it mysteriously upon the Heart: or as Ramana would say, the Guru pushing from without, the Guru pulling from within. OM Shanti
