In Defense of Catspaw

While several reviewers have disparaged Classic Trek's Halloween Episode, I have to say that it has always been one of my favorites. One reviewer complains that it isn't "scary." Precisely! One of the underlying objectives of Classic Trek was to demystify a variety of common fears. Another was to demythologize history. As Kirk would say, "Most mythology has its basis in fact." Kirk and company fight fear with science. Another review bemoans the lack of interesting ideas in this episode. Yet, in the space of three-quarters of an hour, we are addressed to Jung's universal subconscious, subliminal mind control, and a glimpse of economics in a post-fusion era. That the Enterprise could manufacture the "baubles" that presently drive humanity to greed and violence is a window into how a future human society could escape the necessity of war. An interesting side note is that veteran Star Trek director Joseph Pevney helmed a very similar looking film in 1951, "The Strange Door," starring veteran horror actors Boris Karloff and Charles Laughton.

I am getting the whole Star Trek original series on DVD. even though they are overpriced for what you get. Overall, I have been satisfied with them, but this particular copy started to skip at the end of episode 29. I returned it, and received another copy, which also skipped in the same place. I was satisfied with the content, obviously, and Amazon's service, but for now, I had to skip this episode and move on. I will try to repurchase this disc at a later date, hoping to get a new master. This idea worked for me with Disney's Tarzan which had a similar problem years ago.
