Présentation de l'éditeur
Lord Philippe Lavay once took to the high seas armed with charm as lethal as his sword, and a stone-cold conviction: he'll restore his family's fortune and honor, no matter the cost. Victory is at last within reach—when a brutal attack snatches it from his grasp and lands him in Pennyroyal Green.
An afternoon of bliss brings a cascade of consequences for Elise Fountain. She is shunned by her family and ousted from a job she loves, and her survival means a plummet down the social ladder to a position no woman has yet been able to keep: housekeeper to a frighteningly formidable prince.
The bold and gentle Elise sees past his battered body into Philippe's barricaded heart . . . and her innate sensuality ignites his blood. Now a man who thought he could never love and a woman who thought she would never again trust must fight an incendiary passion that could be the ruin of them both.

Long is my favorite historical romance writer and I’ve read everything she’s written. I confess that, overall, I have become an impatient reader. I tend to skip over a lot of slower stuff. But Long is one of my exceptions to that. I read every word. She is a great writer. She has a biting wit. She has wonderful similes and metaphors. Her characters show deep insights into people and life. She is the only author I know whose books I would purchase without a single review. Examples of her skill:
Surprise is shown thusly-- “Mrs. Winthrop’s eyebrows launched like birds flushed from shrubbery.”
After writing a very serious letter, Elise “sprinkled sand over the text of it with the gravity of someone trickling new earth into a grave.”
Elise’s six year old son “adopted new words the way some people adopted puppies or kittens.”
Ah, still my beating heart! I eat these kinds of things up like chocolate truffles.
About the specifics of the story. Phillipe reminded me a bit of the Duke in my favorite Long novel, What I Did for a Duke. Melancholy, lonely, hurting, and temperamental but kind underneath. Witty like that duke as well. Elise is sharp and strong and wonderfully manipulative in a good way and witty and passionate. Jack, her son, is smart and funny and charming. I love Long’s dialogue. It’s not only witty but shows character as well. It crackles with tension and humor. The characters in this tale do not say and do wildly funny things as often as they did in What I Did… but they are still wonderful. He is French and every time he does something that perturbs or upsets her, they both say he is only “being French” as a way of getting past hard feelings, sexual longings, etc. Even if whatever he says or does has nothing to do with his being French.
SIGH. I don’t know what else to say. I didn’t like this as well as What I Did… but I still think it is ten times better than 90% of the romance novels I read. Try Long. You’ll like her. And, be sure to read What I Did for a Duke.
The pacing in this lovely story is near perfection. The plot is so well-developed that, even though this book is part of a series, it is a great standalone story and the reader can easily understand the flaws and strengths of each character. Ms. Long made it so easy to be caught up in the dialogues and scenarios...truly engaging writing! I would definitely read this author's work again.
The "sensual" scenes, which were extremely graphic, seemed jarring and out of place compared to the tone describing the rest of Elise and Philippe's story. Their lovemaking was certainly plausible but akin to seeing 10 minutes of an X-rated movie spliced into Masterpiece Theatre.
