HASH(0x92e6669c) étoiles sur 5 Good Stuff from Lacrimosa 18 avril 2007
Par Mr D. - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Lacrimosa was one of the groups that I had tested early on and had dismissed. Perhaps I had downloaded one or two of their worst songs but more likely my taste had evolved in the next two years. Any way, a couple months ago I was placing a large order with a distributor and on a lark I decided to give ole Lacrimosa a shot and I ordered what I believe is their fourth studio album, Inferno.

Lacrimosa is a German duo consisting of Tilo Wolff and Ann Nurmi formed in 1990. They have started their own record label, Hall of Sermon and have managed to produce eight studio albums, six EPs and one Live album in that time.

Lacrimosa's music is dark, melodious, ambient and symphonic in what could be described as Darkwave / Doom metal with forays into progressive, even heavy metal. Wolff seems to be the creative force and he is creative and prolific having fifteen releases in twelve years. Wolff and Nurmi share the vocal duties with Wolff doing approximately two thirds of the vocals, despite the fact that Nurmi's voice is much better. Tilo and Ann make a striking couple, they act like a couple, I'm sure they're a couple. Tilo with his Prince style 17th century clothes and two toned hair and Ann with her pretty, full, low cut, always black dresses present a royal appearance as if they the King and Queen of Goth or better yet the Vampires. Of course sometimes Ann appears in sexy under clothes and leather like a Dominatrix.

But don't let their appearance scare you. This couple play music suitable for a Symphonic Hall. In fact their 2003 release, Echoes, sounds like that's exactly where it came from.

I won't kid anyone, Lacrimosa is not for everyone. It's not accessible, Wolff's voice is barely average, they sing in German and the music is not particularly beautiful as say Therion. It is, however, extremely catchy, loaded with hooks, haunting and generally captivating, plus the music is somewhat varied and there's one song that even sounds like Metallica

Lacrimosa uses guest musicians for their recording sessions and on the more recent albums have utilized the symphonic orchestras. On Stille they used the Bamberker Symphonic Orchestra and Deutsche Lunkewitz SängerInnen (German Lunkewitz Singers). Each succeeding album seems to get more complicated, lush and at times Bombastic.

I might add too, that Lacrimosa is quite generous with this album running over 70 minutes in length. Just think you could start this album in your Cd player and go do your weekly grocery shopping and put your groceries away to the last 15 or twenty minutes. Why would you want to do this? I don't know, but you could.

Song / Track List

1) Der Erste Tag 10:09 5 stars

2) Not Every Pain Hurts 5:19 4 stars

3) Siehst di mich im Licht 8:18 5 stars

4) Deine Nahe 11:00 4 1/2 star

5) Stolzes Herz 8:45 4 1/2 star

6) Mein Zweites Herz 6:52 4 stars

7) Make it End 6:03 5 stars

8) Die Strasse der Zeit 14:42 5 1/2 stars*

*you've heard athletes say they gave 110% and you say to yourself, how do you give 110%? Well they gave 110%. You try making a 14 minute masterpiece.

"Der Erste Tag" opens with the symphonic orchestra playing very pretty classical style music. Tilo and Ann perform a duet to backing choirs and some heavy metal parts at about the 4 minute mark. this song has progressive intensities as well as tendencies and it seems like three or four songs in one neat package

"Siehst du mich im Licht" Tilo and Ann start out sharing vocals on this catchy up tempo rock sounding number as the orchestra stays in the background except, for highlights and vocal breaks. Eventually Tilo takes over vocals

"Deine Nahe" Has a heavy metal beginning with a medium slow pace and intermittently throughout the first half of the song with Tilo singing and then the pace doubles then goes back again and back again (what do you expect on an eleven minute song) Some great piano and guitar solos in the last three minutes. A metal lovers dream.

"Stotzes Herz" this song bounces all over the place. It starts out slow and melodic with Tilo's Sonny Bono quality voice then picks up to slow medium pace then gets ethereal and electronic at the 4 minute mark and my goodness, heavy metal at the 5:30 mark leading to an marching pace uptempo climax.

"Mein Zweites Herz" starts slowly then builds up to a nice orchestra portion then a reflective portion with an organ, Tilo is the Vocalist in moderation as this is heavily instumentalized.

"Make It End" the other song with English lyrics, a rather clever rock/metal beginning with Tilo and Ann both handling the vocals.

"Die Strasse der Zeit" I'm not even going to describe this song. It is fourteen minutes of lush, bombastic, heavily orchestrated, catchy melodies. wonderful piano and violin. I'm in awe! This is genius!

The trouble with describing these songs is they change so much, not from song to song but within each song. This is wonderful to listen to but a challenge to characterize.

As I earlier stated Lacrimosa is not for everybody and it may also be an acquired taste. An interesting thing about this music is it doesn't demand your attention. It works very nicely as background music.

HASH(0x92e666f0) étoiles sur 5 BEST ONE SO FAR - BUY THIS ALBUM.... 20 mars 2015
Par McKlaatu - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
BRIEF INTRO TO THE ARTIST: Vocals in German and voice is an accquired taste. Music is Classical with Metal mixed in a vessel of saddness and romanticism. Accesible, but then not for everyone. Beautiful b/w drawings as album covers. Studio Albums: 1991 Angst (Fear), 1992 Einsamkeit (Loneliness), 1993 Satura, 1995 Inferno, 1997 Stille (Silence), 1999 Elodia , 2001 Fassade , 2003 Echos , 2005 Lichtgestalt (Creature of the Light) 2009 Sehnsucht (Longing), 2012 Revolution. Tip: begin with “Stille”album (1997).

(Please excuse my English. I do my best)

BUY THIS ONE !!! This is Lacrimosa’s “Dark Side Of The Moon”! (not related). This is a simple “before/after” album in his cannon. This is the album “TO GET” for any new Lacrimosa-curious, different-music seeker in the Serious Metal realm (the second one with Anne Nurmi). (And again, with a real rock band…) . I write song tittles in English (reminder: all vocals are in German):

1st Track “The First Day”: Apply tittled. Please, give your stereo speakers a work-out with this song. And welcome to the band’s new (dominion) realms. This one track shows its place in their music. Yes, it is very simple, but effective in everything. This tracks rocks. Vocals are perfect. perfect first exposition to Lacrimosa. Ends with a Metallica-like energy. But slowy going down. Another perfect concert opener.

2nd track “ Not Every Pain Hurts”: Please skip it! ... if you want to follow the uplifting intro of the previous track, please skip to the next track right away (sorry Anne). This action will continue the enjoyment of the cd [but if you want to stick with the order, this is a downer, a slow tempo carnivalesque song, but for me, not right. Again, the arrangements are the ones that uplift Anne Nurmi’s composition. It is a ballad arranged Lacrimosa style. The reason to survive. Enough said. But skip it (but u are beautiful, my lady).

3rd track ”CanYou See Me in the Light?: (I hope you hear this right after the 1st track) Great rock song for a live concert. Please enjoy (Guns’n’Roses” anyone? You’ll know later what I mean). Listen the finale vocals! I wish I could have sung those lines with that passion. Repeated listening a must (specially after 5:11 essential!! I would have paid to be in the studio!] [Comment: Now, if you skipped the previous track as I suggested, this is a chance to go back and play “Not Every pain Hurts” if you want (you completists!). I feel this progression is more natural. It's not bad but not a great song either –just my opinion, not a rule!].

4th track “Your closeness” : This is another track cementing the quality of this effort. This is a nice slow ballad with Metallica-style guitars , with a later fast short burst then ends with piano. How could you not love this? This is serious rock’n’roll, my friends (end of side One, my vinyl lovers, with a guitar solo!). All these 11:00 minutes are worthy!!

5th track “Proud Heart”: As I have mentioned in my previous albums opinions this is THE SONG TO LOOK FOR… the “hook” song, Yes. But it is not a mere 3 minute single. Not at all ! Simply said: Mr Tilo Wolf’ skill for singles is a magic touch (there’s a shorter version in the EP of the same name). Note: I have arranged a version so I first listen the “piano-only” (instrumental –no vocals) track (from the EP) as an ‘intro’ for the ‘complete vocal’ version. It makes it longer and a joy !

6th track “ My Second Heart”: OK.. well..errr… ... circus ayone?... OK, the artist deserves a break. This is by no means a track to skip. Just not expected. Now, the truth: it is is only (keyboard) winds and voice. If you stick around, you’ll feel it deserves this spot (it is a bit like their ’The Gig In The Sky” - something to breath – appealing).

7th track “ Make it end”: This is a metal arrangement for a composition. Unfortunately, please skip it.

8th track “The Road of Time” – Now, if you please, make sure you will not interrupted for the next quarter-of- an-hour. This is it. Lacrimosa in all its glory and arrangements. Here we have complete rock band with chorus and orchestra. By the way, I think Tilo loves Mexico and its musical scales and lyrical progressions unique to Mexican music. An adventure of a song. From start to finish. This is EPIC ! Ends with violins… who else does this???? ( stand up and applause!)

EP SONG: “ICH BIN DER BRENNENDE KOMET” (“I am the fiery Comet”). Now, as if it was not enough of releasing a trend-setler album, they/he released an EP containing ONE OF THEIR / HIS BEST SONGS EVER… The ‘Komet’ one.. (why in an …EP?? Are u crazy, Tilo?). If this song was instead of “Make It end”, would have been an almost ‘perfect’ album (just this fan speaking). That being said, get this song !!! The EP is worthy just for this song!! (of course, not overpriced).

CONCLUSION: Five STARS !!! Or TEN! The first in the Lacrimosa’s STELLAR albums to get. This one belongs to your rock album collection. If only to show-off your friends that you also like/have foreign (non-american marketed-programed) metal music.. This is the one. And you’ll have a.. (pun intended) a ‘Proud heart’. Do I have to say more?

HASH(0x92e66b28) étoiles sur 5 Simply a Masterpiece 11 juillet 2009
Par Patrick Ashe - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
With Stille, the symphonic metal duo Lacrimosa demonstrates the full brunt of its powerful and original compositional ability. Each song blends the driving percussion, thrashing guitars, and poignant lyrics of hard rock with epic tonal colors and landscapes of classical music, absorbing and switching at just the right rates as song and symphony become one. They each invoke individual emotions, atmospheres, and meanings, oftentimes leading to crescendo resolved by the next track. Stille is simply a masterpiece.

There isn't much I can say about each individual track beyond that without writing a exhaustive and undoubtedly gigantic review. But I will say this: Stolzes Herz is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Period. Other greater-than-great songs on this album are Der Erste Tag, Siehst du Mich im Licht, Deine Nähe (a grand epic alternating between aural sensitivity and righteous metal), and Die Strasse der Zeit. The bonus track featured on some copies, Ich Bin Brennende Komet, is also a fantastic song.

I would recommend this album to any fan of symphonic metal, and most fans of either classical or hard rock. I consider it Lacrimosa's best album. After this one, Elodia, Lichtgestalt, and Inferno are my favorites (in that order). But you simply have to hear this album.
