Doug Keister delivers another awesome field guide for the cemetery enthusiast in Stories In Stone New York. It's a wonderful photographic study page after page with fascinating facts and stories. My favorite part is the GPS coordinates at the end of the book so that I can discover grave stones to my heart's content. Thanks Doug, you thought of everything to make this Taphophile happy!!

This is the second book I've gotten by Douglas Keister, and I love this one just as much as the other, "Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography". My only gripe about this book is that it isn't longer!! The gorgeous photos, interesting histories of these graceful cemeteries and their inhabitants - all combine to a wonderful, informational, treat, to read. If you appreciate architecture, history, and/or cemeteries, this book fulfills all of these. I highly recommend this book!

HASH(0x90ceb6d8) étoiles sur 5 A Very Special Tour of a Great City 8 octobre 2011
Par CemGuy - Publié sur Amazon.com

When you think of city tours in NYC, you think of the colorful double-decker buses or harbor boats zipping allong at breakneck speed. Not this time. Along with his infinite knowledge of cemetery symbolism and architecture, Douglas Keister takes us on a fascinating journey into the lives led behind many of the hidden and not so hidden tombs of NY. There was much I did not know and I was born and bred in NY. Thanks Doug, once again, for inviting us into your passion.

This book details my local cemeteries in a clear, concise way. Great pictures, history and explanations of the symbology of death. For those technically inclined, he even gives the GPS coordinates of each stone or mausoleum listed. Also try Forever Dixie for a southern version of the same thing.

To view any book by Douglas Keister is to fall in love. If we were inclined to attempt to imitate his work, we'd be doomed to failure. His research is impeccable and his knowledge of both society and architecture and symbolism as applied to cemetery art is impressive. Above and beyond those attributes, his photography is incredible and speaks to the heart as well as to the mind and the eye.
This time around Keister does some major NYC cemeteries and also goes to Westchester County to tell the story of how metropolitan NY cemeteries have developed and have maintained their own unique character as well as their distinctive styles while drifting through time and changing tastes.
While this book offers a wealth of information regarding the graves of the early movers and shakers to the more commonly known celebrities who have made NYC and the surrounding area their last and final destination, it explores the beauty of cemeteries and looks at grave style through some less publicly known monuments.
Keister's possesses an inherent talent to reveal things in such a creative way through his photographs that the places you or I may have visited many times before appear unique, different, or in some cases unrecognizable. A cemetery takes on a completely different character when viewed as a long shot with the mountainous buildings of Manhattan and the East River used as a compositional counterpoint. Many people consider themselves ace photographers who know how to capture these cities of stone, but Keister has mastered it.
The biographical section is extremely thorough. Since so many historical figures are covered which include titans of industry, robber barons, innovators, and even some scoundrels, there is bound to be something for everyone. I picked up a lot of new information and managed to expand on things I already knew.
My only complaint re: this book is that I wanted more. That has been my complaint with each of his books. They are so good that they only make their reader want more. This book and all his other books raise the bar for cemetery art and boneyard touring. It is wonderfully bound like anything of value should be and is very reasonably priced given that it offers so much to its reader.
If you have never had the opportunity to visit the cemeteries viewed through Keister's lens, you are going to want to travel to NYC.
