4.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautiful Binding, Decide for Yourself with Illustrations 10 septembre 2014
Par Molly Swindle - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
I loved Hans Christian Andersen's tales of the Snow Queen and the Mermaid and wanted a copy for my own desperately. As an art student familiar with Edmund Dulac, I HAD to get this book when I found it. I ordered through Amazon Prime, so it came right on time, brand new on my birthday (a gift from me to me!) The book is beautifully bound, with illuminated text and illustrations on the front and inside covers. Paper has a nice, weighty texture too. (Some said they got a brown cover, but mine is bound in green like in the photo, only a little less dark green, more like pine tree green).

My only problem with this copy is the illustrations. There's not very many - usually only about 4-6 per story. If you're like me and used to seeing high resolution copies of Dulac's work on a computer screen where the details are fine-tuned, colorful, and easy to see, you might be disappointed by this book. While some of the illustrations are pretty clear, the majority of the ones in my book seemed somewhat duller. Of course, they're Dulac, so they still look cool, but it's more like looking through a dream than through reality. Everything seems to have this pale sort of haze over it - you have to work a bit to see the edges of castles and stuff.

Maybe this was the way the prints originally looked (look at the preview provided and you'll get a fair-ish judge of what the physical book delivers on visual quality.), but as someone who likes saturated color and easy-to-see details, the illustrations were a bit of a let down for me. However, in a book about fairytales, I have no problem pretending the illustrations are like looking through a dream! With a beautiful book, large-sized print, Dulac's works, and Andersen's classic stories, I would recommend this copy to a friend.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Illustrations are printed in very poor quality 15 février 2017

I have to agree with other reviewers that the quality of the reproduction in here is unacceptable. Maybe it's because they were not scanned properly, but I suspect it has something to do with the printing as well: the illustration are printed on a matte finish paper, and I think that Glossy or half glossy finish would have brought out the colors and the details much better. As it is now they are very blurry and kind of washed out.

I've come to rely on Calla editions for classic, previously out of prints books, and I'm thrilled that I'm able to buy the books that up until now were rare and expensive, and I could only gaze upon them in libraries which holds such books. I own many beautiful books from the Calla editions series that I was very happy with, but this one is a big disappointment.

If you're interested in Dulac's work you could buy The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (Calla Editions)
Where you'll see the the art work beautifully and vividly.
Another (cheaper ) choice will be 2 paperback books containing collections of Dulac's Illustrations without the stories:
Dulac's Fairy Tale Illustrations in Full Color (Dover Fine Art, History of Art)
An Edmund Dulac Treasury: 116 Color Illustrations (Dover Fine Art, History of Art)
Both have good quality reproductions.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Gorgeous reproduction of the classic - Calla Editions books are worth every penny! 8 décembre 2009
Par Z Hayes - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
I loved the Calla Editions' issue of Poe's stories, and when I saw this particular edition, I knew it would give me immense pleasure. It certainly has! The book is larger than a regular hardcover, I would call it an oversized book. This 2008 Calla deluxe edition is an unabridged republication of "Stories from Hans Andersen", originally published by Hodder & Stoughton, New York, and London, in 1911. The paper is of heavy stock, one can literally feel the heft of each page! The color of the paper is a vanilla hue, and it is bound in Kennett Cloth, with a gorgeous light brown cover. The font is large and pleasing to the eye (it doesn't mention what type of font style is used), and apart from decorative elements peppered throughout, the highlight of this book is the 28 color plates, containing illustrations by Edmund Dulac, one of the most renowned artists from the Golden Age of children's book illustrations. These color plates appear glossy in this book, and one can literally feel the silky smooth texture of the illustrations! They are so beautiful and exquisite.

There are seven stories contained within - "The Snow Queen", "The Nightingale", "The Real Princess", "The Garden of Paradise", "The Mermaid", "The Emperor's New Clothes", and "The Wind's Tale". Each story has a couple of illustrations to accompany it, enhancing the reading experience. This is a must-have not just for collectors, but also for those who truly love perusing the beautiful illustrations contained in children's literature, and Dulac's illustrations are definitely one of the best. Highly recommended!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Poor Translation and Dull Illustrations. 26 janvier 2015
Par Ab.pro - Publié sur Amazon.com

Very poor translation. Who translated this? Poor use on language, not at all interesting to read. Also, I found the illustrations dull and unimaginative. Yes, they have lot of details but does not illustrate the story very well.

Also, two of the best stories are missing: The Ugly Duckling and Thumbelina! Don't buy this. There are much better publications out there.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 2 pages have printing creases 30 octobre 2014
Par avid reader U.S. - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is a heavy book on heavy ivory paper. The plates inside are a bit faded but what was disappointing was that two of the pages inside had creases on them from the printer. This will be a gift and I am hoping that the heavy paper is acid free. Otherwise, a very nice book and Dulac does beautiful work!
