Présentation de l'éditeur

The misconceptions around what writers mean when we talk about strong female characters make them one of the most difficult character types to write well. Do we have to strip away all femininity to make a female character strong? How do we keep a strong female character likeable? If we're writing historical fiction or science fiction or fantasy based on a historical culture, how far can we stray from the historical records when creating our female characters?

In Strong Female Characters: A Busy Writer's Guide you'll learn
- what “strong female characters” means,
- the keys to writing characters who don’t match stereotypical male or female qualities,
- how to keep strong female characters likeable, and
- what roles women actually played in history.

Each book in the Busy Writer’s Guide series is intended to give you enough theory so that you can understand why things work and why they don’t, but also enough examples to see how that theory looks in practice. In addition, they provide tips and exercises to help you take it to the pages of your own story with an editor's-eye view.

Strong Female Characters is a mini-book of approximately 4,000 words.

So the author starts this book by saying that you shouldn't give a female character male attributes to make her strong. Then she uses numerous personal examples of her own life to basically say why she (the author herself) is a strong female with supposedly "male" attributes. In each section, she sites personal life experiences. She goes into why she doesn't like shopping and lacks empathy. She then uses the strong female examples of Katniss Everdeen of Hunger Games and Starbuck (omits her first name) from the tv show, Battlestar Galactica. Both of whom exhibit strongly "male" attributes. My question is where is this hard to write strong female who has female attributes? Where is that example? Uhm, the reason for the book is to write a believable strong female character, right? I found this book to be an odd account of the author's life and work while not really helping me to form better, stronger female characters. She does eventually explain how to make a masculine female character more lovable & relatable though that isn't what I was looking for.

This is a great little booklet for writers, seasoned and novice. Marcy Kennedy writes clearly with lots of good examples. Looking forward to more of this series.

BTW, I have a strong female main character in my books and some of my friends/beta readers (all strong women themselves) give me a hard time because my protagonist sometimes cries. Thanks, Marcy, for the vindication. It's okay for strong females to also be females!!

I've always found it difficult to create strong females that don't come across as a bitch, but this book has really useable advice for breaking that problem. It has examples I can associate with, and gets to the point quickly. Recommended.

Do you have a professional woman in your close inner circle? Are you a fan of Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Voyager? If so, save your cash and your time, as this author is not going to provide you with anything you don't already know. While this book may (repeat, may) be helpful for you if you're a young and/or novice author, it will be a waste for anyone who has served in the military, counts a female doctor/judge/senior supervisor/etc. in their life. Overall, Ms. Kennedy could have chosen several different anecdotes, but instead invested about the same amount of effort someone would in a blog entry. Poor form.

This is a very brief guide to help authors who may want to include strong female characters in their story, but are unsure of the best ways to make them seem "real."

Marcy Kennedy touches upon a major flaw in much of today's fiction (films, TV and novels) chiefly being that too many authors confuse "strong female character" with "might as well be a man, but in a dress."

This short guide is a refreshing reminder that the key to writing a strong female character is the same as writing a strong character in general, regardless of gender. There are some expectations (or even stereotypes) that we associate with the sexes, and it isn't enough to just declare a female hero as strong by depicting her chomping on cigars, cursing up a blue streak, and cold-cocking a guy with her bare hands without explaining what makes her tick and how she came to be who she is (just like an author ought to do with any male lead).

Marcy Kennedy goes into a little more detail such as the importance of giving your audience reasons to care about your female character, and that it is not only acceptable for there to be some vulnerability to her, but that some vulnerability is essential for the reader to like her (or at least care about what happens to her).

It is a very short piece, but even so at $0.99 it was well worth it as I feel there are some nice nuggets of information in the book, and I have found myself coming back to read it more than once since I've purchased it.
