3.0 étoiles sur 5 Carnival Bizarre again? 19 juillet 2010
Par Mark - Publié sur
Format: CD
I've always been a fan of this band. Forest of Equilibrium is a strange doom metal record that felt like nothing else coming out at the time. The subsequent ep showed the band aspiring to progressions. The result showed more "rock n' roll" tendencies on the next full length Ethereal Mirror- while it still contained the doom element. Carnival Bizarre takes you into more of what was good and bad in Ethereal Mirror- cool doom metal/rock with a hint of disco and calypso rhythms. Dorrian's vocals are moving away from moans and grunts to more Ozzy inspired vocalizations, except Lee isn't really 'singing' per se. It's kinda like Voivod-esque- hard to really pin point but I've never heard really anyone do what Lee Dorrian does vocally. Carnival Bizarre is a record that has it's ups and downs- luckily my beefs with it are minimal...
Which leads me to this album. The album definetly has a good sound - perhaps even heavier in the production department, and perhaps is less slick sounding. But once you take a listen straight through the album I began to get bored. It feels like fillers upon fillers. Nothing really sucks about the record- rather, it feels sorta like they found a formula and stuck to it. Lee Dorrian defintely sounds like Lee Dorrian, Gaz is definetly playing all the right Black Sabbath inspired riffs- the rhythm section is doing exactly what you'd expect them to do. I guess for me , that's the problem. It feels...uninspired-lacking in hooks,- it just sorta feels like self indulgent, at times more hokier than usual lyrically. (The lyrics have always been a mixed bag of goofy and serious which at times works to their advantage.) It's not a terrible record, for me I liked seeing them progress- and here it feels like they played it safe. If you liked Carnival Bizarre, you'll probably like this too. For me, give me a little bit more variety.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The opposite to Endtime and yet addictive 3 février 2005

Supernatural Birth Machine; since the album tittle this is a stunning production, slow riffs were left behind after "Forrest of Equilibrium" for faster guitar sounds , heavy bass, and occssional sabath tunes such as in "stained glass horizon" with a "sabbath bloody sabbath" like ending, a few moments of Osbourne reminded type of vocals by Lee Dorrian, and in general an atmosphere very 70s, lyric topics are also kind of betwen funny and bizarre, as you can hear in tracks like "Urkos conquest" yes! about planet of the apes, "fireball demon" will also blow your mind, "suicide asteroid" is a blast, Cybertron 71 a distortion guitar introduction made in seconds is fascinating and Internal Countdown is the perfect begining for this journey , Supernatural Birth Machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This album is very good. It has an amazing song Birth Machine 2000 and the rest are very good. It is in the same formula as the Carnival Bizarre . Domm metal but not boring and slow as their first album. Well their best album till this one is Th Carnival Bizarre. A must for all Cathedral fans.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Very good, slow, bludgening, Sabbethy metal 28 mai 2001

I don't claim to be an expert on Cathedral, since I only have 2 of their albums, but this is good metal CD in the style of Sabbath and Motorhead (very SLOW Motorhead!). The singer is as gravelly as Lemmy, sometimes it sounds like he needs to cough up a luggy to clear his throat, but he has enough range to carry the tunes. Very dense guitars and bass, with thudding drums that make you feel like you are slowly getting beat up by a heavyweight. Some of the lyrics are kind of cool if you're a fan of Planet of the Apes and the like. All in all, good, but not awesome.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 So much FUN! 18 avril 2011

This album sounds energetic, bright (drums and guitars sound amazing) and heavy! The songs themselves are not overly strong or memorable, although Urko's Conquest, Stained Glass Horizon and Suicide Asteroid do stand out! The VIBE is powerful and FUN. This is a great album to just release energy to... It is very accessible, and would make a great workout tape :))

Just get it, turn off your brain and ROCK OUT!
