Fredrik Gustavsson never considered the possibility of love, or that anyone could ever understand or accept his dark and bloody lifestyle--until he met Seraphina, a woman as vicious and blood-thirsty as Fredrik himself. They spent two short but unforgettable years together, full of lust and killing and the darkest kind of love that two people can share.

And then Seraphina was gone.

It's been six years since Fredrik's lover and sadistic partner in crime turned his world upside-down. Seraphina went into hiding and has eluded him ever since. Now, he's getting closer to finding her, and an innocent woman named Cassia is the key to drawing Seraphina from the shadows. But Cassia--after sustaining injuries from a fire that Seraphina ignited--suffers from amnesia and can't give Fredrik the information he desperately seeks. Having no other choice, Fredrik has been keeping Cassia locked in his basement as he not only tries to get her to recall her past--because she and Seraphina share it--but also to protect her from Seraphina, who clearly wants her dead.

But Cassia is a light in the darkness that Fredrik never believed existed. After a year subjected to her kindness and compassion, he finds himself struggling with his love for Seraphina, and his growing feelings for Cassia--because he knows that to love one, the other must die.

Will light win out over darkness, or will something more powerful than either further destroy an already tortured soul?

Sooo...The Swan and the Jackal...what was that?! I was definitely excited to get to know Frederik better. The bits and pieces we got of his story in Reviving Izabel were intriguing and I had to know more! Well, we don't get too much of Fredrik's past beyond what was already told, but his present is screwed up like woah! This man has had a woman chained in his basement for the past year. He doesn't abuse her, and the basement is more like her own little apartment. He just wants her to remember something, anything, about his wife so that he can find her. Cassia knows Seraphina, but she really can't remember anything, except that she loves Frederik and is terrified of Seraphina.

I don't even know with The Swan and the Jackal. Seriously. What I am suppose to say, other than this is the best of the series I've read so far, and if it weren't for some minor issues I'd have rated it higher, because seriously. Frederik is not at all how I imagined him. Yes, he's still scary as hell, but he's not as cold and emotionless as I assumed. In fact, he's quite the opposite. He feels terrible for keeping Cassia locked up, but he'll do whatever it takes to get to his wife and that destroys him! But then there's a twist and I was like WTF?! No way! I didn't see that coming. And then that ending totally blindsided me! What in the world is happening?! I'll just say, if you're looking for a happy ending...this is not the book for you! Again..WTF?!

Honestly, I can't even say much about how great The Swan and the Jackal was because that twist is so huge that I could give everything away on accident! I suppose I could just mention my complaints, which were few. One was that Cassia was kind of a boring character. Being in her head (before the twist) was kind of dull, but luckily most of this is from Frederik's POV. And once the twist happens, she becomes much more interesting. The other is that at times I felt like the story was dragging. I didn't really care about the mission that Frederik is on during all of this, and frankly, I don't think he did either and it showed through the narrative. Other than that though, The Swan and the Jackal was quite surprising, but certainly not a romance!

The Swan & the Jackal is the third installment in author J.A. Redmerski's In The Company of Killers series. I am a huge fan of Ms. Redmerski and will read anything that she writes. When I heard that she was continuing this series with Fredrik's story I was so excited! Oh Fredrik...our violent, murderous, damaged, sadistic, serial killing Fredrik. I loved seeing his character developed in this book, but it also broke my heart. His character resembled the television character: Dexter to me. "I don't kill innocent people. I, while although a sadistic bastard and torturer and killer, have limits and standards." He is dark and ice cold, and he only feels when it comes to one person...his ex-wife.

This story is told in alternating perspectives between Fredrik and Cassia, a woman who he hopes can lead him to his ex-wife Seraphina who betrayed him. Fredrik and Seraphina's relationship is very interesting. They are cut from the same sadistic cloth and she helped (and hurt) Fredrik in many ways. Although the betrayal happened years ago, he will never stop looking for her. And even he doesn't know what he will do once he finds her. "I was just a shell of a man who knew only darkness and death, who only felt the emotions of anger, and hatred, and rage and vengeance. But Seraphina, she was my dark angel, who came into my life and showed me that there was so much more to living than I ever understood."

Cassia is the opposite of Seraphina. She's gentle and kind, and turns out to be Fredrik's undoing. She fills the emptiness in Fredrik that Seraphina couldn't. The question turns out to be: Does Fredrik even want to find Seraphina anymore? "I've never known light. Only darkness. I've never experienced tenderness or frailty or compassion, until Cassia." I can't reveal anymore of this story or the dynamics between the characters, but I can say that there is a huge plot twist that made me absolutely freak! Also, Victor and Izabel make more than a few appearances in this book. If you enjoyed the other two books in In The Company of Killers series then you will love this one too!

The series includes the following books (as of March 2014):
#0.5:Seeds of Iniquity (not yet released)
#1:Killing Sarai
#2:Reviving Izabel
#3:The Swan & the Jackal

My favorite quote:
"Love always comes first."

"To infinity and beyond" - that's how much I love this book. A 5+ star book!

"The past shaped me, molded me into a monster. A monster with a persecuted heart and a dead soul."
This is Fredrik Gustavsson - an interrogator, a torturer and a killer.
This is his story, a dark and messed-up one, with plenty of twists and turns - just when you think you have it all figure out, the bomb is dropped.
This is also Cassia's story - a woman he keeps trapped in a basement, and uses in his quest to get to Seraphina, his former lover and "the other half of my soul".
Cassia brings out in him feelings he thought were lost forever - "She made me see a light in the darkness that is my life and she made me feel as normal as anyone else. She is my light." They are ying and yang, they complement each other perfectly - two lost pieces of a whole.

This is not your typical clean cut romance story, but there's no way you won't fall madly in love with Fredrik :)
I can't wait to read more about this character and would definitely recommend it!!!

It's an amazing read!!!

WOW!!! just WOW. I can't leave a review without really giving away spoilers. I will just say this. All the gang is back and I have to say that since the first book Frederik has intrigued me. In the 2nd book he was featured more and to say I wanted to read his story was a understatement. He has to be one the most intriguing male leads I have ever read. WOW.. Genius on what J.A. Redmerski wrote... GENUIS!

GAH, could this series get any better???!!!

There’s always that question: do you prefer a standalone or a series? I love them both for different reasons, they’re both perfect in their own way. But I have to say it’s been a while for me to be so invested and addicted to a series where I can’t enough…until now. The Swan and the Jackal only makes me eager for more and I can’t start the 4th installment fast enough. JA Redmerski’s writing is enthralling, she amazes me more each time. The twists that she throws at you, you never see coming. Her creativeness blows me away. I’m not sure how these books are categorized, thriller, suspense, new adult? Don’t know, don’t care. All I know is that they are different and fun and sexy and humorous and thrilling and offer so much goodness. I’ll say it again, I AM HOOKED!

Is Frederick a wee bit crazy with how he thrives on torturing people and how he does it? Yes but can’t blame him for being twisted, he had a messed up past. Besides he’s hot and he cracks me up. Okay so that might make me sound crazy but again I don’t care. I love every character in the series.

Now for the first three books I experienced the stories through audiobooks and I really can’t say enough about how brilliant the readers are. Each and every one has brought this story to life to a whole new level. The guy who narrated Frederick’s character did one of the most amazing jobs I’ve ever heard. How he had a different voice for each character was genius. If you’re going to check this series out, which I highly recommend you do, then maybe try out the audio because I can’t explain how the readers seriously make you crave it to go on and on and on. Really it is JA Redmerski's writing that you simply can't get enough of. With that said I’m actually going to be reading the The Seeds of Iniquity because the audio isn’t available and I can’t wait for it to be, I need to know how the 4th book is ASAP. So excited!
