The piano concerto is good, but I have heard more to my liking. Mr. Graffman plays in an excellent manner.

Shows its age

My high-end system (Denon, Martin-Logan) is unforgiving. The performance is wonderful (I've always liked Graffman) but I do get some distortion in the tuttis.
One of the great Tchaikovsky recordings

If you don't want to commit yourself to the 24-disc Graffman bargain box on RCA/Sony and yet still want to hear Graffman in a "war-horse" concerto, this is the one to get. It was the first Tchaikovsky First I ever owned, on vinyl, back in 1969 when it was issued, and it really hasn't been bettered. Abbado and Argerich, in digital sound in the 1980s, are up there with this, but it's simply stunning. I had just been listening to Beatrice Rana's fine 2015 recording (in great sound), and what struck me first was how good the sound and the balance on this older recording are -- it has weight and warmth and clarity, and what makes it special is that Szell gets a grip on the first movement and drives it along with great purpose. The old stereotype of Szell the martinet seems to be holding good -- until he relaxes into the lyrical moments with very beautiful and tender expressive phrasing, with great dynamic control. Graffman's playing, in this context, is simply superb -- heroic and tender as needed, and demonstrating masterful expressive and dynamic control himself. Where this recording scores over Rana-Pappano, however, is in the coherence that is brought to the last two movements. Graffman's management of the transitions into and out of the quicker central section of the second movement makes them seem the most natural things in the world, and in the third movement, there's a real sense of playfulness and wit, as Szell and Graffman seem to challenge one another with the varied thematic material. The three Rachmaninov Preludes were recorded at another session and make a nice filler to what otherwise would be a short CD (it's still a bit short, to be honest!). But really, this is maybe an indispensable recording. And if you can afford the 24-disc bargain box, grab it.

I bought this CD by accident, to be honest. When I received the album I realized there was a mistake in my selection and quite dissappointed I opened up the carton, pulled the CD out of the jewel box and inserted it in my CD Player. To my surprise, I began to listen one of the most impressive performances I've heard of the first piano concerto. I personally own some jewels, including Van Cliburns' evergreen with the RCA Symphony and the exquisite performance of Vladimir Ashkenazy with Lorin Maazel as a conductor. Two legends of the piano with impecable works over the same composition. But this one was to me more than a discovery: it was an ineffable experience. This rendition by Gary Graffman and Szell is as virtuosic as electrifying! I cannot imaging the fingers of this pianist flying over the keys of a piano with such a dazzling and mesmerizing precision! His technique and the vigorous accompanying of Szell as a conductor went through spotlessly through the challenges of the elusive rythmic configuration of the first movement, the Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso, the expressiveness and beauty of its andantino simple and the Russian flavor of the Allegro con fuoco that soaks with passion the melodic passages of the third movement. I recommend this CD with 5 stars: first, because the quality of execution, polished and brilliant, joins the quality of the recording of the CD itself (Yeah, that's important too! ).
