Présentation de l'éditeur

Grow Healthy Plants And Fish In A Nearly Self-Sustaining System With This Fun And Easy Guide To Aquaponics

A great hands-on project for homes, classrooms, clubs, churches, and science projects.

We humans are a smart, innovative, and creative bunch. These skills will help us as we face some big challenges in the future like feeding a growing population, taking care of the environment, and conserving water. Teachers, parents, club leaders, and science enthusiasts can help foster these important skills in children and in themselves in a fun, fascinating, and hands-on way by building a tabletop aquaponics system.

Aquaponics is the science of growing fish and plants together in a mutually-supportive environment, and now you can create an aquaponics system in your home! In Tabletop Aquaponics, engineer and author John Choisser walks readers through the process of setting up their own tabletop aquaponics system that is virtually self-sustaining. For a few hundred dollars (or less, if you're a decent scrounger), this tabletop aquaponic system will provide hours of fun and learning during its construction and set-up, while promoting responsibility in caring for the fish and plants as they grow. As a bonus, you get to eat the tasty, organic vegetables your system produces.

Throughout the book Choisser shares images of his own functioning aquaponics systems to show readers exactly what the finished project could look like. Choisser’s friendly and accessible manual is a perfect aquaponics introduction to beginners ages 10 and up. No prior experience necessary in aquaponics, hydroponics, or aquaculture.

The book includes:

>>> An introduction to aquaponics
>>> A student-friendly explanation of the biology, chemistry, botany and physics behind aquaponics
>>> A step-by-step guide to setting up your aquaponics system
>>> Shopping lists for all the supplies you’ll need for your system
>>> Care guides for your fish and plants
>>> Optional discussion points for curious students
>>> Images of real, functioning aquaponics systems

This book can help any student fall in love with science and conservation as they watch their fish thrive and their plants grow. Tabletop Aquaponics is perfect for the home or the classroom and can be a great summer project, group project, or science project.

See what readers say about Tabletop Aquaponics:

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Extra Reading and/or Starter Read 31 mars 2014

I really enjoyed this. I have a much larger book that goes MUCH further in depth, but this is definitely more of a Cliffe Notes version of aquaponics.

One thing I'm quickly learning about aquapnonics: there is no set way to do it. There are people who use filters, sump buckets, heaters...and others who just use pumps and pipes with none of the other items. It comes down to being exposed to -- and reading / watching -- as much as you can and seeing as many different configurations as you can to figure out the system that will work the best for you.

This little handbook is best for someone who's already done a good bit of the initial research and wants a few more pointers, but I think it would also work fine for someone just getting their feet wet.

It was a good read for some basic how to ideas and set up (e.g., the list of materials and idea to scrounge as much as possible was great) but the book seemed to be a chapter or two short. I would have liked more description of how to complete the set up, discussion of why the author chose the options he did, and what are some impacts of you chose A over B or a bigger/more A. I think it is a good first read and your can replicate what he did but it lacks the background education that you would need if you wanted to modify what he did or figure out why something in your setup wasn't working. But for the price you can't beat it and I would recommend buying it. You'll just have to read another book for deeper learning or experiment with your own set up.

Lots of good info here, now I have even more questions and will read further on the subject. I would have liked more info on eatable fish but understand the use of goldfish for beginners. Will look for more by this author.

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would! I have been researching hydroponics and aquaponics for the past few days and it all seemed so confusing on how to set up my own system indoors. For some reason, the instructions in this book made so much sense and I feel completely confident that I can now build my own system easily. Life saving shopping lists are also included. The history and knowledge of aquaponics is easy to understand. I am using the information for my personal home use, however it is a great book for educational purposes like classrooms. Thank you!
