The book was well written and the pictures were very clear presenting different views as necessary. I enjoyed the historical development section as well as the philosophical perspective....it is always interesting to learn the author's interpretation of the martial art being presented as it is integral to the art as well as lending credibility to the author. Mr. Liang did a wonderful job and his accompanying DVD thru Amazon/YMAA was equally helpful. I found the martial applications seemed more effective than what was on the DVD which were a little weak but the martial interpretation presented for each posture was very helpful so one can substitute as necessary. Mr. Liang also added numerous reminders for most postures to relax certain muscle groups and that is really helpful for students. He also did one of the better jobs of presenting Qi Gong breathing that I've come across so on the whole, he did a wonderful job presenting Tai Chi to the reader.

I purchased the Kindle edition to complement the DVD. It makes sense to have the written format as well as the video. The Kindle layout makes it very difficult to read the text and refer to the photographs. They are not necessarily together, and it is often confusing which text & photo go together, and to refer to the photo as you are reading. Even the picture captions are often displayed with the wrong picture (in a series of photos you often get the photo displayed with the caption from the preceding photo). I am very disappointed, and expect I will now buy the book.

I had never done Tai Chi and when I finally got through the 24 forms, which was gladly more extensive than I thought it would be, I wondered if I was doing it correctly. After checking some videos on youtube, especially the oriental gal in the pink (type in Tai Chi and you'll see her), I saw that I was doing it just like they were, except, of course, they were much more graceful and polished than me. Therefore, I highly recommend the book. If I tried to learn just from the youtube demonstrations, I think I would be pulling my hair out from pausing the computer and rewinding every few seconds. Maybe the DVD that is a companion to the book would help verify what you learned if you wanted to play it safe on the proper technique, but I feel confident now that I don't need the DVD just from making comparisons to the youtube videos.

I'm learning some basic taichi off youtube. Even though I'm doing different forms from the book, this book and the separately sold DVD provides some nice background info to help understand the martial background of these moves. I've found it helpful to know this.

I used to do a good bit of stance training... taichi seems to develop a similar vitality boost while also developing flexibility and is more entertaining than the standing practice, fortunately.

I've been at it for 7 weeks and my wife says I look 5 years younger. My leg strength, vitality, and flexibility have improved. I haven't lost any weight and upper body strength hasn't had any boost.

Overall, a nice addition.

This book, written by a young apprentice who's a mechanical engineer as well as a skilled pratictioner of tai chi, presents a detailed and engaging overview of Eastern medicine, best practices for tai chi, and preparation before plunging into a methodical listing of each of the 24 and 48 postures of tai chi. A monument to ingenuity and hard work, each exercise is presented by a cogent verbal description and accompanying photographs, usually about four photographs for each exercise with arrows indicating the direction of movement. If you do well learning from books, whether visually or verbally, this book could be an excellent way to learn the vocabulary of tai chi movements. Aging hippy types may be put off by the black and white photos and the comprehensiveness of detail, but like a dictionary, this book is worth examining because it arguably contains a large body of knowledge skillfully presented. (Those desiring a more relaxed but less educational approach might try Step-by-Step Tai Chi by Lam Kam Chuen, published by Gaia books, the group that gives New Agers a good name.)
