HASH(0x9d571ea0) étoiles sur 5 If you like the Skorps... 21 septembre 2005

...then you probably already know about this album. Being an older, harder-to-find piece (I'm speaking about the graveyard cover, not the black-with-portraits cover), if you really want some good tunes, then you've found them.

Though this album sounds dated at times (music styles), there are other instances where the music takes some very "modern" turns. You can't say that the Skorpions were ahead of their time -as a whole- but they certainly were inching towards a kind of newness, borne of their great musical abilities. When you have good musicians working together, you're going to get good music.

The quality of the recording is very good, too, which is very evident when you compare this album to other albums of its time; there's some great music that's poorly recorded, and this is not in that camp.

The reason I wanted this album was so I could get my hands on the full, un-edited version of "Sails of Charon" [see EDIT below]. Great mood, GREAT guitar work, great song. Some German bands would get campy, and though the Skorpions' lyrics sometimes lean towards the Old-Navy-Commercial feel, "Sails..." somehow manages to keep a straight face.

Overall, there are some great songs, and Roth really shines on this last album with the rest of the boys. If you want some radio-play Skorpions, this is not the album for you. If you want some good music with that fun, rockin' feel (and a good ballad thrown in... c'mon... it's the SKORPIONS...), then you'll enjoy this album.

EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that I was misled in my research, and that this version of "Sails" is the same length as on the black-covered album. I'm sorry if my review led anyone to repurchase this CD, if there was no care about the original artwork. I was told that the Japanese pressing might have the longer intro... but I can't confirm.

Great album, as is all the Scorpions' '70s output, IMO, but I partly bought this based on the previous reviewer's mention of the full version of The Sails Of Charon, which as of this writing isn't the case. This disc is the same as the cheaper domestic version. All track lenghts are identical between them. If having the original artwork isn't important to you (which admittedly it is to me), go for the cheaper black cover with the band's photographs.

The trademark Scorpions driving ryhthm force is here, with Rudolf Schenker leading the way. He can play the same chord over and over and it still punches you in the gut every time, with the assistance of Frances on bass and newly acquired drummer Herman Rarebell. They sound very tight
on this album. However, the hero of the day is Uli Roth on lead guitar. Until now, I had never heard any of his material. I must say he is one of a kind - I have never heard any guitar player quite like him. His style is a cross between Hendrix Stratocaster fluidity and neo-classical wizardry. The rhythm section sets up Uli's trademark style by using chords that fall under the phrygian scale, and he also uses diminished classical scales. But watch out, Uli could then turn on a dime and burn up a blues or pentatonic scale. Anybody that plays guitar should definitely take a listen to Uli's material - it is very refreshing to listen to.

I would have to say the highlights of this album would be "We'll Burn the Sky" and "The Sails of Charon". "We'll Burn the Sky" starts off with a Scorpions' trademark false ballad intro that is accentuated by the major 7 note on guitar which raises the tension of the song. Following this is
Rudolf's trademark repeating riff style, most likely played on a Gibson Flying V. "The Sails of Charon" is Uli's masterpiece, as he uses a neo-classical style throughout.

Apparantly, Uli Roth was way ahead of his time as this type of rock guitar playing did not get noticed until Randy Rhoads emerged with Ozzy Osbourne.

Klaus Miene's vocals are top notch as always. He has a wonderful voice and sings his heart out.

I would recommend this cd to any Scorpions fan and all guitarists. Surprisingly, this album holds up very well - especially against other metal albums of the same time frame by bands such as Judas Priest, who's plodding 70's sound did not do much for me.

On a final note, I would like to mention that the long version of "The Sails of Charon" is not on this cd, even though it has the original graveyard cover. This was somewhat of a disappointment, but overall I cannot complain. By the way, if you want the long version of "Sails" I think you will have to find the cd with the graveyard cover, but with no bonus tracks.

Okay, I am a Scorpions fan, and I bought this because I wanted a decent copy of Sails of Charon which by itself is worth purchasing this CD, just a top of the line song. Aside from Sails of Charon, I liked Your Light, Born to Touch Your Feelings, Suspender Love, and the live bonus track Polar Nights. All that being said, the rest of the tracks are listenable, but nothing gets stuck in your head and you just gotta hear it again. I mostly listen to Sails and then skip to Polar Nights. It's good but not as good as In Trance or Love Drive. Of course if you're a die hard Scorpions fan you'll want to add it to your collection.
