5.0 étoiles sur 5 A forgotten gem 16 février 2006
Par Darrin Matteson - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
In 1983 songwriters Billy Steinberg (guitar/vocals) and Tom Kelly (guitar/keyboards/vocals) formed the short-lived hard rock/AOR band I-Ten.

Steinberg and Kelly have quite an impressive resume as songwriters, having penned the hits Alone for Heart and Like a Prayer for Madonna among several others they had significant cred in the music industry.

Although MTV was still in its infancy, video had already killed the radio star... If this album had been released in the pre-image concious age of music videos, it very likely would have been a hit.

As it is, 3 of the songs on this album ended up being covered by other bands-- the aforementioned Alone became a hit for Heart, Taking a Cold Look was shortened to Cold Look and covered by Canadian hard rockers, Honeymoon Suite, and I Don't Want to Lose You showed up as a bonus track on REO Speedwagon's The Hits.

The original versions have a certain fire in them that, aside from Heart's Alone, is sorely lacking in the cover versions perpetrated by other artists. Steinberg and Kelly's vocals, while not extraordinary, are certainly of a professional calibre that warrants taking them seriously and giving them further consideration than they ended up receiving.

This album was available on CD for a brief period in the late 20th and early 21st century, but is unfortunately once again out of print commanding upwards of one hundred dollars from some of the more avid AOR music collectors. This album is a musical time capsule of all that was GOOD about music in the early eighties. For the quality of music on this album, it remains somewhat of a mystery to me why I-Ten weren't more well received at the time of this release. If the opportunity to listen to this lost gem ever presents itself to you, by all means close your eyes, turn up the volume and enjoy!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 i-Ten: One of the best "Toto" albums released 21 septembre 2000
Par Anders Bay Jensen - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Originally released in 1983, this album was recorded in between the 2 Toto albums "IV" and "Isolation", and includes most of the Toto band members, plus almost all the best studioperformers of L.A. at the time (Tom Kelly, Billy Steinberg a.m.o)
The songs are well written and powerfully recorded. The 2 best known songs are the title track "Taking a cold look" and "Alone". The last one was also released some years later by the band Heart, but I personally like this original version better.
My favourite song is the great "I don't wanna loose you", with a catchy chorus, and the typical heartbreaking lyrics that Kelly/Steinberg does so well.
If you like the mid-80's AOR/Westcoast sound, this album is a MUST, and the sooner you buy it, the better - for you!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Competent, middle-of-the-road pop/rock 26 septembre 2000
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
A fairly competent (albeit somewhat mundane) collection of early-'80s AOR from a top-notch team of West Coast studio musicians, including several members of the band Toto, "Taking A Cold Look" represents pop/rock at its "middle-of-the-road" best... or worst, depending on how you look at it. This 10-song disc contains nothing overtly offensive, of course, but neither does it capture any of the riffs or melodies that made a band like Toto so popular. Critics may have hated them, but songs like "Africa" and "Rosanna" were at least MEMORABLE. "Taking A Cold Look's" collection of mid-tempo rockers ("I Don't Want To Lose You") and plaintive ballads ("I've Been Crying") are pleasant enough - they just aren't worth remembering. Highlights include "Time To Say Goodbye" and the title track, along with the original version of "Alone," a huge hit for Heart in 1987 (the Wilson sisters included it on their "Bad Animals" album). From the "avoid-at-all-costs" category: "Lonely In Each Other's Arms."

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Taking a cold look (I-ten) A very nice album 10 octobre 2000
Par An artist - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I bought the cassette tape in 1983, since then I've enjoyed the songs from this album, being Lonely in each other arms my favorite. Now it's on Cd, and that's a really great thing. I've always preferred I-ten's Alone, Heart's version didn't capture the 'spirit' of the song. I don't know who the performers are or what music style they are in, I just like the music, and this is a very nice music. If you are planning to buy a good Cd, buy this.
Note: Excuse me for mi English. Alex
