I received my Taste of Home baking book and couldn't wait to start baking from it- see my picture under customer images for the Beautiful Swiss beer bread I made, it was delicious. The recipes include both sweet and savory, everything from two ingredients (palmier) to a bit more complicated like the apricot filled bread that needs to be started the night before, everything in between, and all baking levels.

Some very good and helpful parts of the cookbook are the equivalent chart, substitutions chart, and the first chapter on baking basics. Baking basics needs to be read first, so you know what flour, salt, etc they use, and what they mean by different words like the difference between stiff peaks and soft peaks.

With taste of home one isn't getting recipes that take four days to make, fifteen pages of techniques, and a bunch of one use only baking equipment. The ingredients are easy to find, most people will have 75% in their fridge and pantry already and the rest can easily be picked up in almost any market.

The book is pretty to look out, has a ton of pictures showing the end results, there are tips galore, at the beginning, end, and scattered throughout the recipes.

I usually don't like spiral books but with over 700 recipes it almost needs to be, or trying to lay the book out would cause spine damage. One very slick feature (shown on my video) are the page protectors included. Seriously, this is brilliant and should set the standard for all notebook type cookbooks.

Included is a year's subscription to Taste of Home magazine.

But it's all about how the food turns out. I try never to post a cookbook review until I've made several recipes, because books can look great and then I find out the directions are actually confusing or their are editing mistakes or the food just doesn't taste good. I spent two days baking (next thing I'm ordering from Amazon is a gel mat!) trying both savory and sweet. The beer cheese bread was delicious. I am usually disappointed in cheese breads because they aren't very cheesy. Taste of Home solves that issue by using a combination of cheese chunks and shredded cheese, so the flavor is all through the bread from the shredded cheese, while bursts of small cheese cubes hit our mouths. Although the recipe calls for swiss I bet this would be great with cheddar.

The walnut bars (page 79) made me laugh because they look so elegant with the glaze and crust, and they were dead easy! Delicious. The Palmier recipe is frozen puff pastry and sugar, but it worked!

I find the timing with my oven at the temperatures they use to be very on point. There do seem to be some gluten free recipes, a chapter on almost homemade that make use of mixes, a lighter chapter that honestly, I'll probably never use. Give me my butter!

Taste of home has produced a very usable and user friendly baking book that would be great for a beginning baker but still has plenty of awesome for more experienced bakers.

My kids and I love to bake, so we were really excited to receive a copy of the "Taste of Home Baking". From a visual standpoint, it falls under the "food p*rn" category. Hundreds of luscious-looking, full-color photos of decadent treats, oh my! Pretty much any dessert one might want to bake is included, often in multiple variations. If I were rating the cookbook purely on how well it makes me want to try its recipes, I'd give in 5 stars.

The directions are very clear and easy-to-follow, even for my 9 y.o., who is a novice baker.

Unfortunately, the results of those attempts have been a decidedly mixed bag.


(1) Walnut-Caramel Sticky Buns on pg. 400. These were *AMAZING* and definitely worth the time spent.
(2) Apple Crunch Muffins on pg. 298. My kids inhaled these.
(3) Chewy Soft Pretzels on pg. 361. I'd never before made pretzels and these turned out well.
(4) Chocolate-Strawberry Celebration Cake on. pg. 419 (pictured in the lower right hand corner of the cover). I was skeptical about this "semi-homemade" recipe that uses boxed cake mix & instant pudding as its base. But I got lots of compliments on it from guests at my daughter's birthday.

Partial Successes:

(1) Orange Brownies on pg. 94. These were yummy but didn't taste at all orange-y.
(2) Morning Glory Muffins on pg. 298. These took 40 minutes to bake rather than the 20-25 minutes specified in the recipe. They also fell apart when taken out of the muffin tin. The taste was good, however.
(3) Vermont Honey Wheat Bread on pg. 330. The resulting loaf didn't look appetizing but tasted good. The leftovers made great French Toast the next morning.

(1) Chunky Blonde Brownies on pg. 103. They never baked properly. The top got too browned before the bottom ever hardened. The bottom was the consistency of pecan pie filling and too sweet even for my kids.

Another thing that I really didn't like about "Taste of Home Baking" was that so many of the included recipes called for shortening. I haven't kept Crisco in my pantry in probably 15 or 20 years, ever since it came out about how horrible trans fat is for one's health. I was shocked to see it used as an ingredient so frequently- probably half of the cookie, cupcake, and pie recipes call for it. I checked a bunch of my other cookbooks, and those all call for butter rather than shortening in their dessert recipes.

Overall, I would give "Taste of Home Baking" a qualified recommendation. Definitely do a "test run" of each recipe before making it in a higher-stakes situation because it may or may not turn out the way you hope.

Book arrives. I show my husband. He starts to look at it. Next thing I know he is baking Black Forest Brownies AND Chocolate Chip Cookies. Yum! Yahoo! I figure I'll start baking up some goodies that caught my eye the following day since we can't both fit in the kitchen. Well well well, hubby beat me to it! Next day he is starting not only the Pizza Shop Pizzas he's also working on the Hearty Stromboli! Needless to say, I didn't make it into the kitchen that day much to my joy & frustration. The pizza was delicious. The Hearty Stromboli had too much bread/crust to it. Not sure if that's the fault of the recipe or my Husband. He said he couldn't believe how much dough the recipe made.

My turn in the kitchen I decided to make the Home-Style Yeast Bread. Well it came out super light & super crumbly. Not happy with it at all. Since yeast breads are so easy to mess up, it is highly possible that it is my fault. I normally make sourdough bread so I'm not used to fast rising yeast. I also made the Cinnamon Raisin Bread. I liked that a lot better because it was much more dense. I think I didn't let it rise long enough! Ugh! Oh well!

Let's see since I got the book we have also made, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (these were a disaster totally flat & the second they cooled even a tad they were glued to the cookie sheet it was horrible), Soft Sugar Cookies (these were bland & cake like, but I think it's my fault. I will have to try again), Peanut Butter Cheesecake (yummy!), Simply Fudgy Brownies (Yum!) & many more. I have been flipping through the book while typing this trying to remember everything.

Even though every recipe hasn't been perfect or to our liking, I know we have a great baking book on our hands. Never have I owned a cook book that has been flipped through or used so much! I am nowhere near done, nor is my Husband. There are so many mouth watering recipes, I find myself in the kitchen baking a lot more than usual! Not only that, but there are entire sections I have yet to dive into. Oh boy the endless supply of baking possibilities!

A disappointment I had, was I wanted to make a traditional pumpkin pie & thought I'd use a new recipe from this book. Sadly, I didn't find such a recipe. There are very tasty looking pumpkin cookie, cheesecake, & Ginger Streusel Pumpkin Pie recipes, but not a good old fashioned pumpkin pie : Oh my! Just thinking about the pie section...I love pie!

The technical stuff: It's a BIG book. It's 3 ring binder style. The pages are thin & glossy. Full color. There are dividers breaking down the different baking methods such as: Baking Basics, Cookies, Bars & Brownies, Cakes, Cupcakes, Cheesecakes (yesss a whole section on cheesecake!!!), Pies & Tarts, Desserts, Muffins, Biscuits & Scones, Yeast Breads, Quick Breads, Coffee Cakes & Sweet Rolls, Almost Homemade, Yeast Rolls, Holiday Classics, Trimmed-Down Favorites, Alphabetical Index, General Index.

Each divider lists all the recipes in that section & the page they are on. It also lists the Tips & the pages they are on. On the inside of the cover you are provided with a Food Equivalents chart. On the inside back cover there is an Ingredient Substitutions chart. The very first page contains a card for one free year subscription to Taste of Home Magazine! Very cool, I mailed that baby in right away. They sent me an email confirming my subscription. I am so excited! I never read Taste of Home Magazine & after this awesome book, I am really looking forward to it!

If you love to bake or you know someone who does, this book is simply perfect in nearly every way! It is sure to get many years of use in our home. I'm already looking forward to baking delicious treats to give as gifts & to share over the Holidays!

**I have made 19 of the recipes in this book**

Alright, I've sat on this book for a year without reviewing it. And why is that? Because I tell myself I have to make a certain number of recipes before I can review a cookbook, and since I'm a single person, I can't make something every day or I wouldn't fit out my apartment door. But that day has finally come and I wanted to make known what a terrific book this is.

You'll notice that this is quite a large book, set up in a binder format so that it can lay flat. There are two plastic covers that come with it, that you can set over a page to protect it from splatter. I'm too lazy to use them, but they seem like a good idea. Next, the inside covers have food equivalents and substitutions tables on them. This is almost my favorite part because it is so handy. Then we get into the actual book itself.

The first tab is baking basics and this is just a short section explaining methods, measuring tools, what kind of bakeware you should have, and the difference between eggs sizes and other such things. For someone who's new to the world of baking (or an expert who may not know a couple of things) this chapter is very useful. But enough about that, on to the food!

The first section is cookies and because cookies are easy to make, this is where I spent most of my time. The Cherry Pecan Dreams were pretty good and the Butter Wafers were easy to make and turned out light and crispy, as they should have been. Next, the Butterscotch Oatmeal Cookies were also delicious. But then there was the Chocolate Chunk Shortbread which was terrible and not very good tasting at all. Luckily, that was one of the only not so good things in this section. Further into the chapter, the Cinnamon Oatmeal Cookies were addicting, and I'm pretty sure that I ate the majority of them myself. The Orange Cinnamon Chocolate Chips Cookies were unique and I shared them at work where they were scarfed down instantly. And despite having made these cookies, there were much much more in this chapter that I haven't yet had the chance to make but am excited to try, like the Walnut Crescents.

The next chapter was Bars & Brownies. This section is a little shorter, but not by much, there are quite a few bars and brownies to be had. The Caramel Pecan Bars were easy to make, but a little overly sweet. But the Triple Nut Diamonds were faintly reminiscent of Pecan Pie and not hard to make despite looking complex. The Toffee Bars were also easy to make and tasted very good. I will say I wish I had made the Tiramisu bars already, they look delicious! It will definitely be on the list to try soon.

Cakes I didn't really get into that much. I'm not much of a cake eater, nor do I enjoy making them. They have about every cake and frosting you could think of listed in this section though, so if you do like cake, I'm sure you'll find something here.

Cupcakes are kind of like cakes, I don't find myself being drawn to make them either. But this was also a very small section compared to the rest so it may have just been that none caught my fancy. There are some Pumpkin Chip Cupcakes that might be good for the holidays though.

Cheesecake I can't stand, I've only ever made it for other people who like it (and I'm beginning to sound like I don't like sweets at all from the last three chapters, I do, really, I'm just picky about sweets). They certainly have some exotic sounding cheesecakes in this chapter though, like the Pina Colada Cheesecake or the Mexican Cheesecake (yes there are some savory ones listed).

The Pies and Tarts section is especially timely for the holidays. The Never Fail Pie Crust is definitely a recipes that someone who always has troubles with crusts (like me) should use. It was easy to make and use and tasted just fine for the pies in this chapter. For Thanksgiving last year, I made the Vermont Maple Oatmeal Pie which was definitely unique and enjoyed by the family and the Ginger Streusel Pumpkin Pie, which was a fancy take on the classic and probably the best loved pie at the holiday. I do have to say that I may make the Black Forest Tart for the holidays this year, it looks sinfully delicious.

The next section's title always makes me laugh because it's titled desserts. I thought that was everything in this book, but apparently not. There are a lot of cream puffs in this section, but I haven't yet made any of them. I have however made the Strawberry Pizza, which was among the favored desserts that I took into the workplace this year. And best of all, it was simple to make. The Banana Brown Betty was also easy to make, but turned out mushy and the taste was only ok. I think Brown Betty's should probably stick to other fruit.

I love Quick Breads. Easy, no time to rise, and usually delicious, they're great to take to potlucks or as a contribution to a group dinner. And there are several in this chapter that were successful. Like the Chocolate Zucchini Bread and the Lemon Bread, which had a light lemon flavor and a somehow dense yet light at the same time texture. The Lemon Blueberry Tea Bread was also nice, and had a cake-like texture to it. The Coconut loaf was a good idea too, but it was a little too dense in texture. I do wish I would have tried some of the savory quick breads in this chapter, but just haven't gotten to it yet. The Amish Onion Cake looks amazing.

Muffins, Biscuits and Scones is the next chapter in this giant of a book. I actually haven't tried anything from this section yet, and I'm not sure why. There's a bunch of different savory and sweet muffins, biscuits and scones in here. And the Pepperoni-Olive ones especially sound like a good snack.

Yeast Breads is a good section too. I actually like the process of kneading dough, it's a great way to get frustrations out. I actually made the Vermont Honey-Wheat bread the other day and it tasted just as a honey wheat should. Although it did take some very pricey ingredients like maple syrup and honey and a good amount at that. Still, it was perfect when toasted and slathered with peanut butter. The Pepper Cheese bread was good too, although a tad crumbly. And there are so much more in here, like the No-Knead Harvest Bread, that I would definitely like to try. There's even recipes for stromboli in this section.

The next section is Coffee Cakes and Sweet Rolls. As I scan this section I'm beginning to realize that I haven't really made it through this book much at all. There's just so much here! From doughnuts to sticky buns, it's a large section.

Almost Homemade I must admit that I largely ignored. I don't like using packaged mixes and that's what the majority of this is. Sure it's convenient, just not my style. In a book filled with so many other good things, this is just a section I'd avoid.

Trimmed Down Favorites is a section for those who want to indulge without killing their waistlines. The Makeover Frosted Banana Bars were really good and easy to make, but alas, I like full fat so they're the only thing I made in this section. They did have some gluten-free in this section as well though.

The last chapter is Holiday Classics and while I consider this all to be Holiday foods, Taste of Home gets specific. Nearly every holiday is represented here, from Christmas to Halloween to Easter. There's even St. Patty's day cupcakes.

And we end the book at the indices, which are general and alphabetical and a lot easier to find certain things than flipping through the book is. There's just so many recipes that it makes it hard to find things otherwise. Especially when you can have up to four per page. But even with that many recipes, there are still pictures of some of them on every page, which is nice. I like to compare what I make to the pictures to see if I did it right.

I really like this book and refer to it often if making something to share at work or at a group meal. Things are simple to make and understand, the instructions easy to work with, and the food more often than not delicious. Also, most of the ingredients are easy to find at your local grocery store. It can be overwhelming at times due to its sheer size and amount of recipes, but I try not to let it intimidate me too much. If you're a big fan of desserts or just like to bake this is probably the book for you. In fact, it might be the only one you need because of everything in it.

Oh, and before I forget to mention it, you also get a free year's subscription to Taste of Home magazine, which was a nice little surprise to come with the book.

I initially thought it would be a dessert baking book because of all the great pictures on the cover, but it is actually a lot more. It encompasses: Baking Basics, Cookies, Bars & Brownies, Cakes, Cupcakes, Cheesecakes, Pies & Tarts, Desserts, Quick Breads, Muffins, Biscuits & Scones, Yeast Breads, Yeast Rolls, Coffee Cakes & Sweet Rolls, Almost Homemade, Trimmed-Down Favorites, Holiday Classics, An Alphabetical Index and a General Index.

Additionally, the insides of the cover have a chart for food equivalents (Apples: 1 pound = 3 medium = 2-3/4 cups sliced), and Ingredient Substitutions (Allspice 1 tsp = 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon plus 1/2 tsp ground cloves)

I love all the color photographs and helpful tips that are included throughout the recipe book.

Helpful information:
- this is a hard-cover 3-Ring binder
- The rings allow you to open to a page and lay it absolutely flat (love that the pages don't accidentally close on you)
- 786 Recipes
- 730+ Full color photographs
- 182 how-tos and baking tips
- Includes a splash guard page (clear plastic that you can put on top of your recipe so any splashes won't ruin the page)

I'd been looking for a good spritz cookie recipe, and when I got this recipe book and looked it up, there are four different spritz recipes, and one is a delicious lemon spritz! The Lemon-Blueberry Tea Bread is beautiful, and the White Chocolate Cranberry Bread...yumm.

I found the Secrets for Successful Yeast Breads (page 319) to be invaluable. I've had a little bit of trouble with getting my yeast doughs to properly rise, and after following the tips had MUCH better success.

This would be a great gift too as it is beautiful and colorful inside and out.

There are so many wonderful recipes in this book!
