Présentation de l'éditeur

Using a framework based on principles of teaching and learning, this guide for teachers and teacher trainees provides a wealth of suggestions for helping learners at all levels of proficiency develop their listening and speaking skills and fluency. By following these suggestions, which are organized around four strands – meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning, and fluency development – teachers will be able to design and present a balanced program for their students.

Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking, and its companion text, Teaching ESL/EFL Reading and Writing, are similar in format and the kinds of topics covered, but do not need to be used together. Drawing on research and theory in applied linguistics, their focus is strongly hands-on, featuring

  • easily applied principles,
  • a large number of useful teaching techniques, and
  • guidelines for testing and monitoring.

All Certificate, Diploma, Masters and Doctoral courses for teachers of English as a second or foreign language include a teaching methods component. The texts are designed for and have been field tested in such programs.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellence in Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking 6 août 2010

I bought this book because I had previously bought Nation's book, How to Teach Vocabulary, which is how I found out about this book. This book is a welcome anomaly, because it is very well written, and it clearly interrelates and explains a great deal of the theory behind the teaching suggestions as well as how to apply the theories in terms of the techniques, which I imagine Nation and his students spent a great deal of time coming up with, trying out and fine tuning. Nation organized this book around the four strands, as he calls them, which are the "parts and goals of a speaking course:" Meaning-focused input: Learning through Listening and Reading, Meaning-focused Output: Learning through Speaking and Writing, Language-focused Learning, and Becoming Fluent in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The four strands is a refreshing and different way of approaching language teaching and learning, which I think if you take the time to read carefully and to apply, that this book will prove to be a valuable addition to your teaching library, even if only for the voluminous teaching ideas and techniques sprinkled liberally but carefully throughout this book. In short, this is an excellent book on teaching ESL/EFL because it shows you, a teacher, that you don't have to throw the baby out with the bath water in order to be an innovative, well-prepared and effective teacher.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent guide for teaching ESL 27 mars 2014

This is a required textbook - and it is filled with explanations and examples. I have already successfully used many of the techniques discussed. The book is well written and easy to follow, and the examples are well explained. Because it is a textbook it is rather overpriced !!!!! but the content truly is outstanding.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 An invaluable source of activities and tasks 26 décembre 2012

Not only is this book chocker-block with great, quick listening and speaking activities, it also - via the four strands - gives the reader a framework around which a teacher can structure a listening and speaking course. Even if you do not agree with Nation's insistence on meaning focus listening or his balance of the four strands, this book is a must for any EFL/ESL teacher.

This book was required for my Master's program, but it is extremely helpful with many concrete activity ideas. If you are looking for more listening and speaking ideas for your language class, this book won't disappoint.

A new text required for Western Governors University ESL endorsement program. Highly recommended for the ESL/ELF educator and undergraduate student.
