Présentation de l'éditeur

A 2014 Garden Writers Association Media Award Winner

Just as he demystified the soil food web in his ground-breaking book Teaming with Microbes, in this new work Jeff Lowenfels explains the basics of plant nutrition from an organic gardener’s perspective. Most gardeners realize that plants need to be fed but know little or nothing about the nature of the nutrients and the mechanisms involved. In his trademark down-to-earth, style, Lowenfels explains the role of both macronutrients and micronutrients and shows gardeners how to provide these essentials through organic, easy-to-follow techniques. Along the way, Lowenfels gives the reader easy-to-grasp lessons in the biology, chemistry, and botany needed to understand how nutrients get into  the plant and what they do once they’re inside.

Biographie de l'auteur

Jeff Lowenfels is a prolific garden columnist whose extensive garden writing experience has earned him widespread recognition. He is a leading proponent of gardening using the concepts of the soil food web and founded 'Plant A Row for The Hungry', an welfare scheme that provided over 14 million meals to feed impoverished families in 2005. He is also the author of 'Teaming with Microbes' (Timber Press 2010).

What this book will teach you has nothing earth shattering : organic fertilizers are better suited for your garden ; alright I've already heard that.
But to go to that conclusion you are shown the inner workings of plants at cellular level, even at molecular level.
I've read some book that tried to give the gardener some science and botanical basis about plants but not as entertaining and enlightenning as this one.
I've finally understood why ions were so important in chemistry and in biology, why nitrogen is so hard to extract from air, how the fluids are going up and down inside stems ...
This book is a must have for those who care to know more about the science side of gardening ; another point : excellent paper quality with hardcover and enough pictures and photos to help you follow the text.
I've put only four stars because at the end you still want to know more :)

Just received the book this morning and read it already. The book has great illustrations, and is hardcover and It does a good job of explaining what takes place in the care and feeding of a plant at the cellular level. It explains some basic chemistry to help with understanding the technical side of how this happens.
It does mention soil testing and shows a sample soil test. There is no explanations as to how to figure what quantities to add to one's soil to amend it. Perhaps I misunderstood what the book was suppose to be about.
If you want the rest of the story, which gives you the understanding of how this chemistry is utilized in a very well explained manner, and how to use soil test results to determine what a soil needs, and how to determine these quantities through filling out a step by step well explained worksheet and applying basic math, then I would recommend "The Intelligent Gardener" by Steve Solomon and Erica Reinheimer.
In short,Jeff's book is an explanation, utilizing the principles of chemistry to demonstrate how plants take on nutrition and develop at a cellular level, while Steve and Erica's book is about this and also adds the practical side of how to calculate which and how much of each amendment to use to bring the deficiencies found through soil sampling, to an acceptable nutritious level for human consumption. I would read 'Teaming with Microbes' first. After reading that you will never look at your garden or any plant the same way again. This is a great follow up, but it is a more difficult read. There is a great deal of biology and plant anatomy in the first half of the book. Don't skip it, but don't dwell on it. Plant biology is much more complicated than rocket science on a molecular level, so just try to grasp the general concepts. You can come back later to refresh. Take in what you can and push forward. The only thing I would do differently is to buy the hardback instead of the e-book.

I wish this book had been around when I was growing up! It has opened up a whole new vision of the way that life works to me. I have been reading a little everyday just to grock the fundamentals but then I keep getting turned on to new concepts that make me want to never put it down!
Thank you Jeff Lowenfels for renewing my fascination for nature and her beautiful intricacies.

Great writer, I bought this because I liked the way he makes reading about soil fun and interesting. His previous book Teaming with microbes he made a difficult subject easy to understand. You can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching you I would most definatly recommend this and Teaming with microbes as a must read for any Gardner or people interested in healthy food and soil.
