HASH(0x9045a6fc) étoiles sur 5 GREAT VOICE, JUST RIGHT FOR THIS REPERTOIRE 5 mars 2008
Par Bartolomé Mesa - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Yes, DG should include texts. In fact there is a previous 2 CD set, also titled Canciones españolas, with all the sung texts. Still, this is singing for the ages. And you can always find the sung texts in the Internet. Just one star because of the incompetence and stupidity of the present owners of DG? Come on, man. Berganza's voice is the thing and she's truly wonderful here.

Berganza and Yepes are wildfire. Here is another example of a worthy effort to rescue a great solo debut recording and make it available to those who need to replace their old 1974 LP, and others who never had the original recording at all. We are of the first category, no longer content to put up with the worn LP, and grateful that Deutsche Grammophon saw fit to reissue this precious, historic recording of ancient and traditional Spanish songs. Some of the earliest songs are from the 13th century, from the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" that were compiled by the king Alfonso X of Leon and Castile in the mid-late 1200's. Just how old these songs of praise really are has not been stated. As for translations of the canticles, the best is the scholarly work by Kathleen Kulp-Hill, very hard to come by now.
This is one of those DG digital remasterings that was a total success - DG held onto their exclusive rights to the master and so did not have to buy license from a third-party reissue label. They knew the value of this gem.
We cannot dish out enough praise for the phenomenal abilities of these two artists, without sounding strident. There cannot be a more perfect combination. Although we never purchased other recordings of the canticles, we cannot imagine that a better performance exists.

This is the second DG reissue I have had where no texts or translations were included ( the other was an Irmgard Seefried recital). This is too bad as few of us are fluent in Spanish of the Middle Ages. DG should stop doing this - it is cheap packaging. I have no doubt the texts were included with the original LP.
