5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great tent if you're looking for a small, ultralight, double wall tent. 1 septembre 2013

Normally, I’m an ultra light tarp camper kind of guy. Sometimes a tarp tent. Sometimes just a tarp and a cuben bivy bag. But when we go to the Olympic Mountains for an extended trip then we need something more. The Olympic Mountains can have heavy rains at 40 degrees along with several days in a row of heavy downpours in the afternoon through the night followed by misty and cloudy days. The conditions are very hard for tarp camping so I was looking for something of similar weight but double walled. The advantage of a double walled tent in this environment is that inner wall both raises the interior temperature of the tent so things dry out even in the rain and the inner wall provides protection from the splatter that occurs when rain knocks the condensation off the rainfly. The only other double walled tent in the 1 lb category is the Lightheart Solo in cuben (we have one) but the inner tent is mesh which don’t raise the temperature as much. Still it would be a reasonable alternative to this tent at about the same weight and a little less price.
The Tera Nova tent really delivered the goods for an ultra light double walled tent. It’s very small on the inside. I’m 5’10” and I can just sit up in the middle of the tent if the sleeping pad is deflated. But small is fine with me because all ultra light tents and tarps are small. It comes with the territory. It’s also big enough. Big enough that I can easily stretch out and put my gear in the tent. Big enough that the vestibule can be zipped open just enough that I can cook outside of the tent in the pouring rain without having rain come into the inner tent. The ventilation is also well thought out. If it’s pouring but not windy you can leave the vestibule half open and the vents on the ends open and you’ll get lots of ventilation, little condensation, and no rain in the tent. If it’s pouring and windy then you can close it all down and you’ll get condensation but no rain in the tent because the fly is very full coverage.
The tent is very well designed. It pitches tight on uneven terrain and because of the shape it holds up well in stronger winds. There are attachment points for holding the vestibule open half way (no rain in the tent) or for holding the extra material in the vestibule open all the way (rain just to the edge of the inner wall). These attachment points for the vestibule keep you from flapping it over the rain fly when you’re trying to get out only to have it flap back and soak your clothing.
Some people have complained about the micro toothpick nature of the stakes that come with the tent. All I can say is that with a little care they worked well for me – they don’t pull out any more than other stakes I use – and boy they are light.
The rain fly is cleverly designed not to leak. There are seams at the ends which sit past the end of the inner tent and there is a seam that goes over the center of the tent with the pole that is covered by a waterproof protective strip. That’s it. There is nothing to seal because there aren’t exposed seams over the inner tent. And cuben doesn’t absorb water nor stretch when wet so once you’ve set the pitch of the tent you won’t need to go out at reset it like you would with a sil nylon tent. I’ve spent long hours in the pouring rain and it worked well.
The price of course is that it’s an expensive tent and you have to take care with it. It is delicate. While the rainfly portion is strong and has held up in the wind quite well for me, the floor will easily get holes from rocks. They patch with tape. To me being small and a little delicate comes with the ultralight territory and the double walls, light weight, just big enough, and well thought out rain fly make it an excellent tent for the inclement weather we have in the Olympic Mountains.
