There's a lot of truth in this small volume, in language that is simple enough for anyone to understand. Don't skip the introduction (a habit I indulge in sometimes), as it's an explanation of this dream we call life. Chapter 1 will open your eyes to just how much you've been "domesticated". "Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive and express what we really are". Chapter 2: The power of language. To be impeccable with one's words, and speak the truth...not just to others, but what is sometimes the hardest, to oneself. Chapter 3. I love this chapter ! It's about not taking anything personally. "Nothing other people do is because of you. It's because of themselves". Chapter 4 is about not making assumptions, and the chaos we create when we make them. Chapter 5 is about doing your best...and about becoming a "master of transformation". Chapter 6: "Breaking old agreements". Breaking free of "domestication". This is another great chapter, one that will challenge you and change you. Chapter 7 is about achieving "heaven on earth", and the book ends with two lovely prayers. This little book of wisdom in the ancient Toltec tradition will help you find the path of the warrior, and the freedom to be "master of your own dream".
15 years ago, I was wandering in a Barnes and Noble and ran into this book - I thought I would scan through the table of contents and voilà - a shot of wisdom lite for me! I had no idea one of the agreements 'Nothing people do is about you' would hit me on the head so hard. That one agreement echoed within me for days, helping me redefine my environment, my relationships, the way I took responsibility for, well, most everything. I didn't buy the book that day, nor for years - very uncharacteristic of me - which allowed the thought to slowly sink within me and complete its graft. Then I did buy the book (ha!) and let the rest do its work. The 4 thoughts are 'simple' yet very powerful - all the more so if you act upon them. Well, actually, powerful thoughts are always 'simple'... but they may come at a time in your life when you really need them and you're ready for them. Throughout the years, I've had an ongoing 'conversation' with the agreements, tailoring them - or reality - to make them fit each other. It's been very interesting and rewarding, in terms of inner peace! So get the book if you want to do a little rearranging of soul, heart or mind;0)
"The Four Agreements" truly has powerful lessons to be learned in such a short reading time. The author's messages are clear and concise, with the potential to have life-changing effects if the reader is honestly ready to embrace the change. Quick, easy reading.
