HASH(0x8de368c4) étoiles sur 5 Three Fact Fantastic 7 juillet 2009
Par O. Poremba - Publié sur Amazon.com

I have been a big follower of Engineers since their first album they released in 2005. From the first listen, I was hooked. Their second album, "Three Fact Fader" had been highly anticipated and I could not wait to hear what the group had put together. I was slightly skeptical, for every track on the first album was so...perfect. Well, they managed to pull it off, and very well. "Sometimes I Realise" was the first song I heard, and it was terrific. Again, that familiar dream-pop, shoegazing tempo has been carried into the second album. Every track manages to create a different feel, but keeps that same familiar melodic mood throughout.

If you are a fan of the first Engineers album, you may have to give "Three Fact Fader" a few listens to get acquainted with the new songs. But one thing stands for sure: you will NOT be disappointed.

Some of my favs so far: Clean Coloured Wire, Sometimes I Realise, Hang your Head, Song For Andy.

HASH(0x8ebd369c) étoiles sur 5 Better than their debut CD, by far! 20 décembre 2009
Par John L Murphy - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I heard of them, but as they're only on import, never heard them until on an in-flight CD player back from Dublin. They came into the rotation and I was amazed. Even on cheap airplane headsets, the album sounded powerful, produced with depth and panoramic scope that opened up the painstakingly constructed (thus their name?) tracks. I had to get this.

It's worth the price to buy as an import. It's reminiscent of Britpop of the 90s combining a shoegazing blurred wall of guitar distortion with heartfelt but assertive vocals that sweep across a booming, deeply tracked terrain. The soundscapes open up well on headphones and for what may have been a small budget and modest label for this Northern English foursome, the confident result's particularly impressive. It's more accessible than much of what I listen to in this genre, and Doves might be a fine comparison to guide you by here.

Nearly every song works, and even the less impressive or more ordinary tracks fill in the gaps more strongly than their uneven but solid s/t debut (also reviewed by me), which I like but which by comparison sounds much more mundane, if respectably made, next to this far more explosive, propulsive second record. I like postpunk of the early 80s as well as shoegaze, and this ambitious disc combines both genres without imitating them. Somehow, Engineers build their own walls of sound that while they seem familiar enough to the ear, still manage to surround you with a bold, big, vigorous architecture that should encourage them to keep striving for continued sonic heights.

HASH(0x8d99c18c) étoiles sur 5 Engineers have outdone themselves 22 mars 2012
Par Tim Robbins - Publié sur Amazon.com

As the radio stations in my area switched formats in an effort to cram more top-40 down my throat, I started turning to other music sources. Soon I discovered personalized internet radio. After purchasing albums discovered by this internet radio, Amazon had recommended an album called Nowhere by this band I had never heard of called Ride. Same with Ferment by Catherine Wheel. A local record shop was playing this strange beautiful music called My Bloody Valentine, a band I had only previously heard of when musician Ken Andrews referenced them in an interview. I quickly found all three of these albums for cheap, and thus began my love of shoegaze.

I tell you this story because after getting into those bands, it has been hard to find others within this genre that give me the same feeling as those original three. With Engineers, however, that feeling has returned.

While listening to a radio station I created ("Ride" radio- highly recommended for Pandora users), Engineers popped up. This band immediately caught my attention: strong melodies, harmonies, and the droning ambiance that is the hallmark of any shoegaze. After a bit of research, I was surprised to find that they were a 21st century band; much like I was ignorant of the original late-80's/early-90's scene, I was ignorant of its modern day revival. Upon acquiring the self-titled Engineers album, I was immediately immersed in a soundscape of lush instrumental atmosphere and hushed vocal harmony. It was light and beautiful like dream-pop, yet dense and powerful. However, it turns out this album was only an appetizer for their next album, Three Fact Fader.

Exploding out of the gate is the song "Clean Coloured Wire," an electronic mid-tempo Ulrich Schnauss-influenced affair. It features tightly harmonized vocal lines reminiscent of Ride. Songs like "Brighter As We Fall" seem an homage to Slowdive with a melancholy and bittersweet sonic ambiance. The variety on this album is also commendable, covering everything from light and catchy ("Three Fact Fader") to dark and gloomy ("Song For Andy"). One of many highlights is the song "Emergency Room", which reminds one of My Bloody Valentine's "Loomer." The sheer consistency of this album is what makes it great. Engineers definitely wear their influences on their sleeve, but without sounding like a cover band; they take the best elements from all the bands mentioned, and add modern touches.

If you are not familiar with the bands I have mentioned in this review, then Three Fact Fader is still a great album on its own. If you check out or are familiar with the afore-mentioned bands and like what you hear, TFF should be a no-brainer. Likewise, those who are turned off by shoegaze or other ambient/atmospheric styles of rock should steer clear from this album as well. As should always be the case with music, preview before buying, but I highly recommend this delightful album. 4 1/2 stars

Note: for those living west of the Atlantic who want to purchase this album, you will have a tough time finding it. With apologies to those selling this album on the US Amazon site for ridiculous amounts of money, I suggest heading over to Amazon's UK site. I purchased my copy there for the price of a regular CD, shipped.

I used my Amazon $5.00 promo credits to purchase some songs from this CD. I had just recently discovered Engineers and their stellar debut (full) CD very recently and was skeptical Three Fact Fader could equal or surpass their self titled debut - I needn't have worried! Three Fact Fader is a superb followup and I immediately purchased more tracks from the other tunes place;-. I am absolutely amazed by Engineers ability to create mesmerizing, intricate and dynamic aural landscapes all backed by golden vocals and intelligent, poetic lyrics. I hope Engineers really get the recognition, respect and financial;-) rewards they truly deserve - sooner rather than later! Perhaps, you should consider previewing "Sometimes I realise.." "Hang your head" or Clean Colour Wired.....Enjoy:-)

Unique, Lush, Dreamy, yet Dynamic. Nothing out there is quite like it. This is as amazing as their debut. The subsequent was a little bit of a letdown, but still good.
