5.0 étoiles sur 5 Practice Smarter! 6 décembre 2010
Par NomeDePlume - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Just as I started asking questions about how to practice smart, I found The Total Shred Guitarist. This is an excellent book. It made a difference in my playing in just a few days! Compared to similar books I've read trying to get on the "fast track" to making sense out of scales and modes, this one adds the critical knowledge gained from the author's learning and teaching experience. The book guides the reader through a comprehensive presentation of the building blocks of shred guitar. To be clear on the points, the explanations are sometimes sparse, so a thorough reading of each word and note is essential. Some amount of playing experience and music theory is recommended, this is not a beginner's book. But using this precise instruction is how the confusing concepts are distilled and made into consumable components. Ironically, by using the "brevity" instruction on specific (read: important) components of playing, I was led to see how ALL the individual building blocks can be combined into an 'all over the neck' approach to soloing. Eureka!!

If you're looking for a nice gift for the shredder on your list... Although the book is comprehensive, its not over-encumbered with an excess of charts and staffs full of notes, which can be confusing. The parts that are left for the student to work-out strengthens the lesson through a reinforcement of ear training, and new skills to learn like tapping. There is no substitute for many hours of practice. So to use my time wisely, Total Shred organizes and makes sense out of the theory stuff, has excellent practice tips, lots of live sounding backing tracks, and tabs of immediately useful musical exercises. It's as if someone has been down this same road before, asking the same kind of questions, and hear now finally, the answers have been provided!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 NOT just for shredders...if you want speed, here ya go... 9 avril 2012

I am not a shredder, I'll confess. BUT, I needed to increase my speed, and I was tired of "just practice this harmonic minor scale" and this lydian mode over and over and over up and down the neck slow then faster...

THIS book is a systematic approach to playing faster, whether your goal is to become a "shredder" or just want to be able to play faster parts as they appear in your mind in whatever genre you may play.

The authors give you plenty of warm up material, which isn't new, but it's nice to have all in one place.

THEN, they move on to more "quick thinking" exercises with scales, and ways to think about the fretboard, with goals of how to improve systematically. I've never seen such in any book before now, and it is exactly what I was looking for.

Will this book help you? Well, if you can already play Yngwie at 280bpm, then probably not. However, for us mere mortals, it is a PERFECT set of material to help us get to the next faster level.

Thanks to the Alfred crew for this book. I'll use it in all of my classes now...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of my favorite books 24 février 2012

I have lots of guitar books, and this one is in my top 5. There's so much stuff to learn here. My favorite parts of the book that i got the most out of, are the tapping licks that are very original sounding, and the open voiced arpeggios which were very creative. awesome string skipping licks, etc too. Much theory to learn in here as well. Worth every penny

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "THE TOTAL SHRED GUITARIS FOR THE SERIOUS STUDENT" 1 avril 2013
Par Ray St John - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
If back in the day we had PAUL GILBERT'S INTENSE ROCK, today in the new millennium we have THE TOTAL SHRED GUITARIST.

Very very few people know how to teach Alternate Picking and other challenging virtuoso techniques. German Schauss makes this easy for you even though you have to practice for endless hours to get there.

I am making a note of this because the term SHRED is used as a joke today where musicians that are NOT Alternate Pickers are considered shredders because magazines need to sells issues. But the term SHRED = VIRTUOSITY!!!

This book is for the new generation of guitarists that wishes to become a good players. I wish we had this back in the 80s when I was just a kid, but we were in the dark ages even though Shrapnel Records and its guitar luminaries we're very inspiring.

When it came down to, "How Can I Play Like That" we had very very limited resources and there weren't too many good teachers around.

So if you are starting out and you are taking your playing very seriously, this is one book you should buy along with SERIOUS SHRED from GERMAN also and all his books.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An awesome and helpful book 28 juin 2013

This book has helped me a lot in my lead playing, though I have not yet gone through it completely I will recommend this book to those who want to get into some of the basics of heavy metal lead and challenge themselves with some of the more advance techniques like tapping and sweep picking. If you're a dedicated beginner you can learn a lot from this book even though it's more geared towards intermediate to advanced players. It truly is worth every penny.
