I then decided to install it in my HP Proliant Microserver, as it only has 4 drive bays for traditional HDD's not SSD's. After installing my server went haywire and I couldn't boot it up at all, despite knowing my way around BIOS and making sure all the necessary settings were correct. In the end I had to relent and uninstall it in order to get my server to boot again.
All in all I am a little disappointed that the only real use I have for this now is to add 2 USB3 ports to one of my PC's. Regardless it does what it says on the tin, but is not 100% compatible with pre-built systems...custom builds should have no probs however.
Apart from this issue the card seems well made and comes with a SATA lead,a molex to SATA power lead and a low profile bracket. Just make sure when ordering that it is not supplied by a company based in the USA. Mine was but it was not obvious as the normal Amazon despatch times were shown at check-out and it was not until the tracking info appeared on the order that it was obvious the item was being sent from the USA so instead of the stated 3-5 business days it in fact took 10 business days. But at least the company (HotDeals4less) in the US were very helpful and communicated well.
Added later....... After attempting various tweeks to get the SATA III port to return better speeds I discovered that this card has to be installed in a PCIe gen2 (PCIe 2 x 1) slot, this info was supplied by Transcend support. As I believe the only slot I have available is a PCIe x 1 (I believe this is classed as a gen1) this explains why the SATA III speed is worse than SATA II under these circumstances. Subsequent tests on the USB3 port indicate an increase in speed by around a factor of 3 (using CrystalDiskMark) depending upon the test so at least the USB3 port does give an increase but nowhere near the 10X claimed for USB3 over USB2.
I fitted a 3TB Western Digital drive in a Dell 745 and had to kiss good bye to a Windows XP Pro 32 Bit O/S that was running like a stream train and upgraded to Windows XP Ultimate 64Bit. The PSU in the Dell is customised for that machine to providing the DC power to the card was a problem as only 4 SATA power plugs are provided and it is impossible to power the Hard drive and the DVD-ROM unless you relocate the hard drive out of its normal position into a 3.5 inch adaptor in the second 5.5 inch bay below the DVD. I did it with a SATA to SATA +Molex power adapter cable, Failure to power the card results in the USB port reporting power overload, even when unused. I also discovered SATA DVD cannot be powered via a Molex/SATA adapter cable, they need the extra voltage.
The driver for the SATA 3 was native and the documentation for installing the USB 3.0 a little poor. You best going by the pictures rather than trying to follow model/part numbers and card functions. Typical, not written for the western mind.
The system now has 2x 3TB drives on the card with 500GB, 750GB & 2TB on SATA 2 ports. A Bluray writer (USB 3.0) and a 4GB external USB 3.0 drive.
One interesting bit of diagnostic information. If you have a problem with another drive connected to one of the native mother board ports. The system seams to hang when you are expecting the card to flash up what drives it has discovered on its ports.
and may lead you to think there is a problem with the card/drive when there is not.
Installation was a matter of 2 minutes. Easy, fuss-free and the provided sata power cable eliminated the need for a molex adapter.
As I always do with my reviews, I give some time for the product to operate before publishing any of them. And I would have to say after 60 days, so far so good.
I've uploaded an image, a comparison between the motherboard's sata 2 port and this card's sata 3 port. Sequential and random write stayed about the same. Sequential read went from 262 to 317 (even though my motherboard's PCI express is V1.0) and random read was almost double. Usb 3.0 performance on transferring files went from 30-45mb/sec to 90-110mb/sec for my disks.
Windows 7 64bit rating went from 7.6 to 7.9 (Samsung 830 64gb)
And some notes...
-It is x1, which was perfect for me as I did not a have any x4 or x8 slot and my graphics card is on x16 slot.
-You should check your PSU's provided connectors first. I had plenty of sata power connectors but 0/3 molex available. Therefore you might need a splitter.
-This card will fully perform when connected to a PCI express V2.0 slot.
-SATA works out-of-the-box but you need to install drivers for usb 3.0 from transcend's website. There are two different drivers, check your card's version and serial number to download the appropriate one.
-Make sure you enable AHCI mode on your BIOS settings. If you are stuck on IDE, just google "IDE to AHCI", it takes only a few seconds to change it.
