This toy is plain and basic. It doesn't really "look" like a Transformer. You could have slapped a "Dino Riders" sticker on it and that's what it could have been. You got a non transformable Optimus Prime that "rides" Grimlock and whips him like he is a horse in the triple crown.
Grimlock also does not really "transform". You basically pull the lever on his back and he stands up. It is pretty neat how he does it though, and he does look like 2 different figures when transformed. The packaging, if you are a "MISB" collector, was not designed for you to collect. There is no plastic to protect the figure and he is exposed so you can test him out in the box. My box came in OK shape, but since it is so big and the way it is designed, has bends and creases in it. He also has "demo" batteries installed and working, so if you do collect, they will eventually leak when the 20th movie in the franchise comes out.
He is pretty big at 20+ inches tall, and looks very cool next to my Titan Class Metroplex, which stands over 2 feet tall. I have him on display in robot form and he just looks like a big cool robot. The Michael Bay hater in me just does not like what they did to Grimlock in the movie is why I think this figure is ugly. It breaks my heart as I loved Grimlock as a kid (even though I don't know why the Autobots created a "dumb" robot when they could have made him with a regular IQ. I blame you Wheeljack!).
Inner Child View:
Heck yeah I would have loved this toy as a kid. He's huge. He's a dinosaur. He's got lights and sounds and can transform. He also has a giant sword and I dropped him and he didn't shatter like "my dad's expensive Masterpiece Hotrod". It even comes with "Optimus Prime" and you can have him ride Grimlock to stomp and chomp Decepti-chumps. The pop out weapons make cool laser sounds and he growls and talks. He transforms in 1 step. So easy and fun. What's G1?
For parents who have kids that love Transformers and actually enjoyed the latest movie, then you will want to pick this up. He is big and loads of fun for a kid. He does require quick assemble, basically just put the tail and left leg on.
For adult collectors, remember... these are toys. They are made for kids. However, I would still go ahead and pick one up anyway. You can never get enough large scale Transformers to put on display. Just put him next to Skylynx and Trypticon in your "Misfits of Cybertron" collection.
I've included a video so you can see him in action.
What can you say -
#1 The Normal Price point for this guy is questionable worth it... (I got it over half off!)
#2 Simple design and transformation. (This figure is heavy though!)
#3 For the most part a great looking figure and being a 1 step both modes look pretty nice.
#4 Sound effects are not bad, long as he is not stuck on his "down roar" it sounds like he is throwing up...
#5 The magnet gimmick is a bit cheezy for the decepticons, but for the Autobots it works decent enough... I would rather have seen a deception get thrown off verses some spinning device that does nothing...
Overall I would buy this again, but not at the regular full price. It makes for a nice larger sized Grimlock. And who can ever have enough Grimlock!
It is also a HUGE figure. It is quite substantial and very well made. My child has transformed it about 500 times over the course of a week or so and it hasn't broken, something you would expect, but rarely get nowadays.
My child told me to give it 5 stars because he loves it so much, and that's the only vote that counts in my book when it comes to toys!
After assembly, I spent about an hour playing with this thing, it started out as a test to make sure it worked, but I ended up having a lot of fun. At one point my kids asked what the noise in the bedroom was....oh nothing, just mommy playing with your Christmas toys....
All in all I am really happy with this transformer. It is super easy to change from the dino to the robot (one step!) makes lots of fun noises, it has guns and comes with a little optimus figure to ride on the back. There is even a sword hidden in the tail. Can't wait for Christmas morning :)
