Présentation de l'éditeur

A cunning collection of short stories from the master of misdirection, including original tales featuring the hugely popular series characters Lincoln Rhyme and Kathryn Dance.

An aging actor attempts to revive his career by entering a celebrity poker game for a reality TV show. Can he outwit his devious opponents, or is his fate doomed from the outset?

A successful crime writer dies under seemingly natural circumstances, but for one cop, doubts are lingering. There's certainly motive for murder - or is there more to the case than meets the eye?

MURDER . . .
Lincoln Rhyme is announced dead, shot by one of his suspects in cold blood. Is this the end of the line for the criminalist, or just another twist in the tale?

King of suspense Jeffery Deaver grips with every page, setting out a devilishly clever path where nothing is as it seems.

If you think you know the ending, think again . . .

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A great way to get to know Deaver, or just get more of his work 2 juin 2014
Par Lyn Meadows - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
Many of you may be familiar with Jeffery Deaver through his Lincoln Rhyme or Kate Daniels books. Although he has been on my To Read list as an author, I have yet to read any of his books, mainly because I have so many series going currently that I have been reluctant to start another one. I found that reading this book of short stories was the perfect way for me to acquaint myself with his writing.

As it turns out, Deaver has been writing short stories for years. As it states in the sub-title, Trouble in Mind, is his third published volume of short stories. The author himself says in the Author's Note to Trouble in Mind that he began writing at age 11 with a short story (two chapters in length). His latest effort is comprised of 12 stories, most of them in the mystery/crime genre that established readers of Deaver's books would expect. For those of you who love his series, there are two Lincoln Rhyme stories, one Katherine Dance and one John Pellam. Don't worry, though, if you are not familiar with the series. I read and enjoyed all four of the stories and did not feel lost at all. In fact, I thought they were a great way to introduce me to his series and characters. A way to "try them on for size" you might say. The volume includes six other stories in the crime genre, all of which are excellent.

In addition to the mystery stories there were two stories with a more sci-fi or fantasy bent. Deaver himself calls these "genre benders" and tells us that one thing he likes about writing short stories is that they "allow an author to step out of genre more easily than novels do." I would say he did a good job stepping out of genre, as one of these stories, "Forever" was my favorite from the whole book.

To be honest, though, I loved every one of the stories in this compilation, and cannot wait to read more by this author. In addition, I am anxious to start at least one of his series, as the stories included here peaked my interest in them. Since I live in Northern California, I may start with the Katherine Dance books as they take place in the local area where I live. Whether you are a tried and true Jeffery Deaver fan, or just someone who wants to explore his work, I would recommend Trouble in Mind. For me it was a great place to start with Jeffery Deaver's work.

Thanks to Grand Central Publishing for making this title available through Netgalley in exchange for my review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great short story collection 19 juin 2014

Each story is great, a few classics. Each has a star, some familiar and some new. A few are identified with only to find you are supporting a psychopath. Incredible collection of very well written stories. I can't wait for several of the characters to get a full book story. One of Deaver's best yet!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A mostly middling, forgettable batch of stories 19 avril 2014

Between the return to form for Lincoln Rhyme that was The Kill Room and the absolutely fantastic The October List, Jeffery Deaver has been coming back into his own lately, and that made me awfully excited to check out a new batch of short stories. I'm a big fan of Deaver's first two collections (Twisted and More Twisted), and the promise of more of Deaver's no-holds-barred twisty tales had me awfully excited. Unfortunately, Trouble in Mind is a pretty big letdown, with a bunch of stories that run the gamut from "fine" to "passable" to "dull," depending on the one you read. There's a pair of Lincoln Rhyme stories, with one being utterly predictable ("The Obit") and another having a great central idea that never goes anywhere especially interesting ("A Textbook Case"). Kathryn Dance makes an appearance in "Fast," which finds the interrogator working against the clock to solve a bombing, and for all my lackluster feelings about the Dance books, the story works better than most in this collection. "Paradice" feels like a step towards neo-noir, but it never comes together quite as well as you hope it's going to; "The Therapist" starts off great but falls apart into silliness; "Bump" and "The Plot" are pretty predictable as they unfold, while others ("Reconciliation" and "The Weapon") just kind of fizzle from the get-go. It all ends with an enjoyable enough novella called "Forever" about a statistics-happy officer who ends up working a murder case, and while it's a fun read, it never feels especially great or essential in any way. Deaver's capable of great work and great short stories, but these mostly disappoint; while few are outright bad, none achieve the peaks he's capable of, and as a collection, it mainly feels mediocre and old-hat.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 More twists in the tales. 5 mai 2014

I've long enjoyed Deaver's books - the Lincoln Rhyme series very much, the Kathryn Dance series less so but I have read the previous story collections to good effect so had to jump on this one. Deaver is in a sense the modern O.Henry with convoluted stories that often end with a great twist. Some endings are a complete surprise, others less so, but short stories are often an enjoyable bit of "mind candy" for me and such is the case with these. (Do note that some of these stories also appeared in the collection "Triple Threat".)

Glad to see the political dialogue was recalled back in this book. The characters were a little more real than in his last offering. The final story, Forever, was a very good interest keeping read, almost worth the purchase if had been a stand alone.
