Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

Tunnel is the story of what happens to a group of people travelling by train through the Channel Tunnel between England and France. It's the Eurostar journey from hell. There's a spinster schoolteacher, a bitter and ageing sportsman and a publisher who has been smuggling porn. There are two doctors returning from a conference, a female official from a European bank, a family returning from a rain ruined holiday, an art dealer travelling with his mistress, a male secretary and a computer expert who has left behind a dead prostitute in Paris. A fairly ordinary group of travellers in other words. And then there is an explosion and they're trapped in the Tunnel. The cover photograph was taken by Vernon Coleman at the Gare du Nord in Paris - and it is genuine and untouched.
Vernon Coleman writes (13th April 2014)
The first kindle edition of this book contained enough errors to fill a skip. One of the big ones proper builders use. I apologise profusely. The book has appeared as a hardback and a paperback (without errors) but things had to be done to turn it into a kindle book and the errors climbed in en masse. We were not helped by the fact that the spellchecker which was used is about as much use as a soaking wet paper hanky. But in the end it's my book so it's my responsibility. So, unreserved, grovelling apologies. The book has now been completely re-edited and republished and it is, I hope, much the better for it. I hope readers now enjoy the book.'

Leapin' Literary Lurkers has already said it so much better than I can. Im glad this too-short book got a good review in the time between my acquiring it and finishing it, because it deserves it. I really enjoyed it as well; lots of interesting characters (not too many for my taste either) and sold backstories. Exciting surprises as the book moves along; as long as you dont mind a story set in the pre-digital age when people still relied on faxes and telexes, this book should please most readers of this genre.

I found this an incredibly interesting book and liked the disparate threads that eventually pulled together as the scenario unfolds. Despite what the another reviewer mentioned about "cast of thousands" that was "too much bother" to read --- actually the stories are sufficiently individual that the differences come to light as the story progresses.

The happenstance involvement regarding group interaction was terrific and filled with amazing detail. As the train emergency develops, we learn the truth of "necessity" being the "mother of invention" and witness the most extreme aspects of the characters

There were a handful of typos that the author might consider fixing on the next go-round [manger showed up a couple of times for manager; "restore to live" for life; "pouring over textbooks"; "shank of black hair" which seemed to be trying to say either "shock" of hair or "hank" of it; and "at a guest I would say" --- for guess. [NOTE dated 7/27/14: I received the following email from Peter Barrett "The author has apologised for the typos and they have been corrected." I always appreciate authors who read reviews and make necessary corrections. Thanks!]

The synopsis actually outlines many of the back-stories. There is a hint of salacious activity but nothing untoward in my opinion.

We remain agog at some of the shenanigans of how organizations, corporations, etc. actually work and see them deny responsibility for decisions based on expediency and capital gains.

The reader is asked to mull:
~how people react under stress and the truth of their nature
~which part of life actions are worth examining
~the role of fate in your life
~and, oh yes...what IS the meaning of your life?

I didn't bother trying to finish reading this book as much as I wanted to do so. The author introduced 10,000 characters in the beginning, most of whom had professional titles. A cast of thousands was just too much bother. Also, I'm not interested in financial/political intrigue - but that's just me.

An interesting and thought provoking story. The contemporary theme presents a not impossible scenario in our day. A novel outcome that I didn't see coming. Coleman incorporates his views on many social and political trends of the present day and interweaves them in a suspenseful story. I found this an
interesting read. He also has an Orwellesque novel called Revolt! about a present day totalitarian state. Actually, I've enjoyed all his novels (except those with detailed cricket match descriptions, which are beyond me) and The Young Doctor series about Bilbury, a quaint English village. He has written many books revealing and decrying the social trends in contemporary European life which might resonate with many people. I didn't finish until I read almost everything he has written, and I still scan Kindle for more. A book about Elvis called Is This What Really Happened? is very entertaining.

It was interesting to read about the people who would soon be together on the tunnel train. It was pretty necessary to explore their characters so we can find out how they react in a desperate situation. I found it very hard to put the book down - wanting to rush through to see what happened. There were some surprises at the end. Very enjoyable.
