Présentation de l'éditeur

He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widow, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.

After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly... even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.

And the last thing they ever expected was each other.

But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.

… she should have chosen the strip club.

“Babe, I’ve handpicked everythin’ and everyone in here. I know what I want and I get what I want,” he breathed. “And I keep what’s mine.”

Biographie de l'auteur

Mariana Zapata began writing love stories soon after she learned how to spell. She probably shouldn't admit that she started sneaking romance novels from her aunt's bookshelves way before she was old enough to even understand what it meant when a man flipped up a woman's skirt. (Don't tell her mom.) Luckily, she learned to love the process of two people falling in love instead of all the other juicy stuff. Mariana lives in Houston, Texas with her longtime boyfriend and two beloved (and emotionally manipulative) Great Danes, Dorian and Kaiser. When she's not pretending to write, she's reading. You can usually find her burning somewhat edible experiments in the kitchen or cracking jokes at the expense of her family members.

Was it really more than 900 pages???!!!?? I didn't see them. Once you begin readying, it flows so perfectly you just don't want to stop. Perfect characters, both evolving and maturing. A lot of sass, fun, strong testosterone with our favorite bicker. The mix is great for a very enjoyable book. I could definitely go for more, for much more of the WMC.

Excellent characters with a good old story that's not old at all. Too bad she doesn't have more books out yet!

HASH(0x8c913498) étoiles sur 5 One of the best MC romances I've read. 25 janvier 2014

900+ pages of actual romance. You get to know both the hero and heroine. You get to watch the progression of them falling into a relationship. Zapata does what I've given up on. She created a world where you can see the characters. She sacrificed nothing. Not grammar, not plot, not romance, not dignity, nothing.

I loved that Dex wasn't sweet and accommodating in the beginning. I love that Iris didn't wear her survival status as an excuse to not live life to the fullest. I love that Dex was jealous, possessive, protective and loyal to Iris.

I love that he cared when she was mad. I love that he chased her, claimed her and wasn't resentful or a punk about it. I love that I paid one flat free for a complete and utter fabulous story. Thank Mariana Zapata. You just gained a tangible for life.

HOLY crap!! Am I really the first person to review this book???

Well.... In case you were wondering, I got my money's worth on this book!!! It was long, not too long, loved the characters.

Iris was recommended to be a tattoo artist front desk lady by her half brother Sonny. Sonny is friends with the owner(?) of the tattoo shop, Dex. Now they definitely don't have any immediate sexual tension. Dex was an ass to her. Both Iris and Dex are bad with new people. Iris because she's just super shy, and Dex because he just doesn't like the process of people getting used to him, or that's what I gathered from his personality.

Though Iris was really shy, and a beginning.. a pushover, she never did get on my nerves. Recently, I've been feeling real judgy towards heroines. I just find something that always bothers me. Thinking about it now, I don't think I was ever like that with Iris.
Even though she's mousy, she's still really strong. She finds the positive in really shitty situations.

Dex is hawwtt! Sure in the beginning he was a dick to her, he had his reasons... not a reasonable reason, but a reason. I don't think he bothered me too.. GREAT CHARACTERS!!

This couple does have a somewhat slow buildup. They don't get intimate until the last half of the book. I didn't really mind that because the author didn't bore with unnecessary details. For an MC book, this book doesn't have much angst, and again I'm totally ok with that.

Overall, great read, worth my money, worth my time!!
Hopefully, you all enjoy this book as well as I did :D

HASH(0x8c9136a8) étoiles sur 5 Really good biker romance, with emphasis on character development 25 janvier 2014

The Premise
Iris Taylor moves to Austin, TX to live with her half brother Sonny, since she lost all her ties to Florida - her mother and grandmother have passed away and her other brother Will has joined the Army and is stationed in Japan. Sonny, a member of the Widows MC, gets her a job at Pins and Needles, a tattoo shop owned by Dex Locke, a "Dick" of monumental proportions from the moment Iris meets him. Iris has her secrets, and issues with getting close to people, but troubles with her loser father leads her to depending on the Widows, and she realizes that family doesn't have to be only the ones you can't choose, but the ones you can.

The Good
One of the best features of this story for me is that it isn't a cliffhanger, or a novella, but a full novel with a beginning, middle and end that takes its time to develop the relationships within.
I wasn't sure what to think when I started reading this "biker" romance, since my experience has been hit or miss. Biker romances are usually dependent on a couple of things: the action/plot overriding actual character development and the shock factor - a world so different from your typical romance novel reader that it's like a train wreck that you can't look away from (Madeline Sheehan's Undeniable series comes to mind as one of the better examples of this).

Additionally, some biker heroes land on the wrong side of alpha a-holes and I end up disliking one or both of the leads. I am very happy to say that I really enjoyed getting to know Iris and Dex, as well as the other characters that populate this story.

Dex could have been well over the line of alpha a-holes, but through first his friendship with Iris, and eventually his love, the development of his character elevates him from the one-dimensional lead he could have been. Iris could have easily been a very frustrating heroine, yet she rides the line as well and there isn't a moment throughout that I felt played false or didn't make sense based on her history, which is revealed bit by bit.

While the secondary characters aren't as fully developed as Dex and Iris, the seeds are there and I can easily see this being a series - a series I'd be eager to read.

The Just Okay
While I enjoy the fact that time is taken to develop the characters, there could have been some mild editing to tighten the story and to fix some very minor grammatical/spelling errors - though to be fair I have seen much worse, so this is a minor quibble. The obstacle/major angst portion of the plot involving the father isn't as strong as the romance and the resolution of that plot point was almost an afterthought.

The Bottom Line
I was pleasantly surprised by this story and I'd recommend it for those who really like character driven instead of action-packed books. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Ms. Zapata.

HASH(0x8c91399c) étoiles sur 5 Absolutely Fantastic 25 janvier 2014

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The writing was just fantastic. The hero was an alpha male with a big heart. He loved the h so much and he expressed it beautifully. I cried a few times reading this. I liked that they didn't immediately hop into bed together. They got to know each other and when it was worth the wait. Please support this author and buy this book. You won't regret it.

HASH(0x8c913ea0) étoiles sur 5 A Handful of Ideas Doesn't Make a Finished Story 25 mars 2015

Iris is a young woman down on her luck who moves to Austin to live with her half-brother Sonny, after losing her job. Sonny, a legacy member of the Widowmakers’ Motorcycle Club, gets her a job at a tattoo parlor run by a club brother, Dex. Unfortunately, after a lifetime of hardship and loss, Irish simply doesn’t have the emotional wherewithal to put up with Dex’s short temper and careless tongue. After one insult too many, she’s ready to quit, only Dex won’t let her.

Under Locke is billed as a motorcycle club romance, but the reader sees very little of the Widowmakers other than a few afternoon parties and a handful of short bar scenes. Most of the novel revolves around Dex’s tattoo parlor. This isn’t unsurprising as the narrative stays firmly on Iris’s point of view, and Iris has been raised to be wary of the MC lifestyle. Maintaining a true limited perspective is something author Mariana Zapata does well; shifting perspective and tense between the male and female protagonists is a staple of the subgenre, and given how clumsy it is in execution, one I wish would go away.

Unfortunately, it is pretty much the only thing that Zapata excels at. The story floats along, unsure what it wants to be, or even where it’s going. Is it an MC romance or a tattoo parlor romance? There is some tension supplied by Iris’s deadbeat father indirectly causing problems for his children, but it is obvious that it’s only there to get Sonny out of the way so she can become dependent on Dex, see his better side, and fall in love with him.
Which brings me to another problem—there is no real chemistry between Iris and Dex. We know that Iris is attracted to him, because she tells us so. We know Dex is attracted to Iris, because he tells her so. Realistically, it makes sense that Iris wouldn’t be able to figure this out on her own, as she is very much caught up in her insecurities, but it makes for a lackluster romance. There is very little tension between them. We know that Dex has been struggling with his attraction—again, because he tells us so—but that’s pretty much it. In spite of Iris’s visceral appreciation for his masculine beauty, it seems like she only falls into bed with him because that’s what the author wants her to do.

What this boils down to is a story of an incomplete person drifting from one place to the next and going along with whatever the dominant personality in her life at the time wants her to do. There is very little sense of Iris as anything beyond a shell of an Everywoman, because Zapata is trying to create a character out of the firmament of tragic events. You don’t get a relatable character that way, you get a literary homunculus. It has no likes or dislikes, no hopes or fears, no goals, no personality. Iris comes programmed with habits and quirks, but nothing else.

And it is through this outline of a person that we see all the other characters. The result is, naturally, a disappointment. Sonny is the perfect older brother willing to do anything for Iris and not much else. Tripp is Sonny’s best friend who may nor may not be attracted Iris, but is allowed to be little more than a surrogate brother. Vincent, the MC President, is the substitute father for them all, but only comes into play when he’s needed, in spite of us being told how much affection he has for Sonny and Iris.

And then there’s Dex. What we see through the eyes of Iris, if you strip away what the author tells us, is really nothing more than a boor any woman would quickly tire of. He is the over-bearing, rude, and seemingly handsome owner and operator of a tattoo parlor loosely affiliated with a motorcycle club, and that’s it. He isn’t real, instead coming off as simply another device for Zapata to get her Everywoman where she wants her—being taken care of by a man after he’s wedged her into his life.

On a whole, Under Locke isn’t a bad book—I’ve certainly read much worse—it just isn’t developed enough to be a good book. If you’re looking for a story that meanders from plot point to plot point through a gentle fog, then it will satisfy you. However, if you want a gripping story with solid, three-dimensional characters, look elsewhere.
