An expertly condensed account of Joshua Wong’s unplanned evolution from the child of mild-mannered middle-class Christians, organising an innocuous petition about school lunches, to internationally recognised democracy campaigner and political prisoner. It deftly sketches the predicament of Joshua’s generation of Hong Kongers, born in a free and law-abiding enclave with a 50-year time-bomb around its neck, ticking inexorably towards compulsory absorption into China’s authoritarian police-state in 2047. Still young teenagers, they realise that moves are afoot under Xi Jinping’s aggressive new leadership to suppress free-thought in their city long before that deadline, setting off a chain of snowballing political actions which push Joshua to the forefront of an intensely energised and skilled democracy movement.
Wong charts his childhood influences, from Japanese and American comic books and Star Wars to a belief in selfless honesty inspired by his religious upbringing and the tireless community voluntary work of his parents. The central portion of the book takes the form of a prison journal written during his 2017 incarceration, giving him time to reflect on both the wider political struggle outside and the personal stories of fellow-inmates from more disadvantaged backgrounds than his own. The book brings us up to the end of 2019 and the escalation of demonstrations culminating in the polytechnic siege and landslide election victory for democracy candidates in the local elections.
