Descriptions du produit

Cette référence propose l intégralité de leurs 2 performances,
enregistrées à dix ans d intervalle,
dans l émission phare de MTV.

2 fulgurants témoignages du talent de R.E.M. en version acoustique.

Inclus 11 titres bonus dont Get Up, World Leader Pretend, The One I Love,
Sad Professor, I'll Take the Rain ...

L Unplugged de 1991 s articule plus particulièrement autour des chansons de Out of Time (Radio Song, Low, Losing My Religion) tandis que celui de 2001 puise dans les albums Reveal (Imitation of Life, All The Way To Reno), Reckoning (So, Central Rain) Lifes Rich Pageant (Cuyahoga) et bien sûr Automatic for the People avec le sublime Find the River.

I have been waiting for this release since... Well, 1991. I am so excited to have this set of two pristine performances. REM is more than just a band - they are all artistic visionaries who made a mark on the face of music that will never go away. We'll never have a band that sounds like them again. These shows showcase the quality of their music because the songs transition so well into 'unplugged' versions from the 'plugged in' versions as they were originally recorded. In short, these two performances are legendary.

The 1991 set is probably my favorite of the two because it has a more stripped down sound without the other extraneous musicians that are in the 2001 show but don't get me wrong, that is am amazing show too. (I will note that this isn't the full 2001 show technically... In actuality some of the songs were repeated because they didn't like how they sounded the first time around.)

If you are a new REM fan buy this before you buy anything else. If you're a long time fan - - do I have to give you a reason to buy it? Shouldn't you have bought it by now???

Personal favorites in this set is Mike Mills' cover of "Love is All Around" (wish he had recorded more songs singing lead) and of course, any song with Peter's mandolin. (Peter inspired me to learn the mandolin!) Enjoy the art, the sound, the emotion that is REM. These men are amazing even after Berry's retirement.

The quality of the sound is crystal clear, Bill Berry's vocals stand out more here than in the 1991 broadcast show but I will point out, however, that some of Michael's banter has been edited out of both shows.

Now the only question is: HOW MANY MORE YEARS WILL I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THIS ON DVD??? I have bootleg DVDs of the performances but I know an 'official' release would be better quality.

In 1984, R.E.M. were touring up and down the eastern seaboard and the DJ's in Norfolk had the good sense to play their music on the radio there. To my friends this was our 'local' band from Georgia that visited us in Virginia and played some fantastic shows just for us. My favorite of several R.E.M. concerts I attended was the 1984 concert in Virginia Beach the band played right in the middle of the hot summer of that year with the amazing Dream Syndicate as the openers. Of the hundreds of shows I got lucky enough to see this one was really special and it proved that R.E.M. was a performing band first and lucky for us they made some incredible records as well.

Others, spread the word about the greatness of this band and by the end of the eighties they were much bigger than anyone ever thought they would ever be as the most popular American band of all by the early 1990's. Bootlegs of R.E.M. are out there in bigger numbers than the official releases and it's fun to find a boot of a great R.E.M. show anywhere you can and I have a couple dozen I have gathered in my travels from the past 25 years of searching and most of these discs are treasures I'll always enjoy.

This collection captures two MTV Unplugged shows from 1991 and 2001.
The 1991 show features Berry, Buck, Mills & Stipe with Peter Holsapple with mandolins and guitars all bright and shiny and with "Stand" and some others hit songs not included this is not a "Greatest Hits" show but career-spanning bunch of songs from 1980-1991 that are just some greatest American music that you will ever hear. This Unplugged show features a tight and focused set and different from other live concerts the band were apt to perform as on this night there is just one cover featured in the set (The Troggs "Love Is All Around") These versions of: "Perfect Circle" "Fall On Me" "Belong" and "Radio Song" are songs I remember from the bootlegs but as you don't always get the best sound quality on those pirate recordings it's a pleasure to hear the sonics of this set as they are great.

There were many bootlegs of the 1991 concert and a few of the tracks from this show made their journey to official R.E.M. discs but this is the complete set with five extra songs that were not broadcast on the MTV show. The extra songs included are; "Fretless" "Swan song H" "Rotary Eleven" "Get Up" & "World Leader Pretend."

The second disc features the 2001 Unplugged show and R.E.M. are now a trio without Bill Berry but three extra musicians are onboard to fill-out the band's sound and this my favorite of the two shows as the piano brings another key element into the sound and this is closer to band's studio recordings and the playing very polished and precise and a treat for the small audience.

Songs from the 1990's are heavy in the set but 1980's classics such as "Cuyahoga" and "So. Central Rain" can also be found here. This was the period of R.E.M's greatest success and most of their most popular songs get to shine on this 2001 concert and it's really a great set of music. The extra (not-broadcast) songs of disc two are: "Disappear" "Beat a Drum" "I've Been High" "I'll Take The Rain" & "Sad Professor" and it's just another bonus in this already fine collection.

Here are 33 live R.E.M. tracks and I'm sure glad the boys cleaned the attic and brought this one down from it and I really hope that more is on the way.
FIVE STARS!!!

Given that, even in their earliest days, R.E.M. depended heavily on acoustic coloring for their finest material, it's not a surprise that MTV Unplugged would fit them like a glove. These two Unplugged Sessions, which include 11 performances not featured on either of the original broadcasts, offer both empirical evidence that - in both of their decades - R.E.M. could evoke all that was good about indie bands in the 80's on.

Split between a 1991 show behind "Out Of Time" and a 2001 show behind "Reveal," they augmented their sound with guests like Peter Holsapple (the 1991 set in particular) and Scott McCaughey (who played in the pick-up band The Minus Five with Peter Buck). It also showcases how important Mike Mills' harmony vocals were with Michael Stipe's idiosyncratic leads. Given the time between the two sets (long enough to include the R.E.M. post Bill Berry), there's a lot of ground to cover. It actually makes the 2001 disc a more satisfying listen, as they include favorites like "South Central Rain," "The One That I Love" and the oddness of "Country Feedback" sitting next to songs like "Imitation Of Life" and "Sad Professor," which are improved in this setting. They also went for the lesser known songs, like "Belong" and "Rotary Eleven" at the expense of some more obvious selections ("Radio Free Europe" doesn't show up on either disc, although "Losing My Religion" made both shows).

Fans made distraught by the band's break-up can now content themselves with vintage material such as "Unplugged: The Complete Sessions" and the online clear-out of B-Sides and outtakes for the real devout. However, as dual snapshots in the R.E.M. timeline, "Unplugged: The Complete Sessions" is a feast in a drought. I am willing to bet that there's still more in the vaults that will arrive over time. One can only hope.

This review is by Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic:

Originally released as a quadruple-vinyl Record Store Day exclusive then later a double-CD set, Complete Unplugged Sessions captures two separate acoustic shows from R.E.M.: one from 1991, performed just after the release of Out of Time, the other from a decade later, just after they released Reveal, their second album without Bill Berry. Oddly, of these two performances, the one that feels the most like classic R.E.M. is the 2001 gig; even with the absence of Berry and an emphasis on latter-day Baroque pop typified by "At My Most Beautiful," this is a band that's playing as a band, augmented by some extra musicians -- trusty Scott McCaughey, along with Posie Ken Stringfellow, fill out the band while Joey Waronker provides percussion -- but nevertheless evoking nearly every era of R.E.M. by providing tight, assured versions of "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)," "Cuyahoga," and "The One I Love," along with a savvy acoustic revision of "Country Feedback." Naturally, there are quite a few selections from Up and Reveal, but those songs sound a bit richer when stripped down and placed in context with the rest of the band's catalog. In contrast, the 1991 set seems like a snapshot of a particular point in time, namely the florid folk-rock of Out of Time. Berry anchors the band on congas, Peter Buck never skimps on mandolin, Peter Holsapple offers sonic coloring (sometimes via an organ), and Mike Mills harmonizes sweetly with Michael Stipe. This is a sound the group never tried before and never did again (Automatic for the People grew out of this but its melancholy stands as a counterpoint to the essential lightness of Out of Time). R.E.M. also peppered their 1991 set list with song choices that remain surprising -- the Troggs' "Love Is All Around" is covered, the B-sides "Fretless" and "Rotary 11" are unearthed, and they performed a nimble rearrangement of "Radio Song," which was distinguished on record by KRS-One's rap -- and that, along with the distinct instrumentation, keeps the 1991 set fresh. Together, these two Unplugged Sessions -- which, in this incarnation, include 11 performances not featured on either broadcast -- make for a bit of a treat for hardcore R.E.M. fans, a document when the group was near the peak of their powers.

This CD set is wonderful and captures R.E.M. at some of their finest and most creative moments. As I listen to the differences between the two Unplugged shows separated by a turbulent and tumultuous decade, I can hear the power and spirit found in the "Reveal"-era band which has often been overlooked by Bill Berry's departure and the impending 9/11 tragedies. The 2001 Unplugged performance helps reinforce that "Reveal" was a powerful album and is mostly likely the greatest album R.E.M. has ever made.
