Présentation de l'éditeur

Amelia Talbot has been issued a death sentence. At least it feels that way. The thought of marrying a man old enough to be her grandfather sends her into a panic. So much so that she sets off on a desperate search to find another man to marry her—quickly.

Conrad Croome, the Fifth Earl of Lofton, knows all too well that blackmail isn’t the way to form a marriage. How ironic that one Amelia Talbot uses a Croome family secret he’d thought long buried to force him to marry her.

Is Conrad doomed to a life of marriage based on an exposed secret, or could Amelia learn to love an unwanted earl?

There were many aspects of this story that I enjoyed. I have to confess that in one scene - when the hero tried his hand at Pall Mall, the outcome of his shot, as it played out on the page, had me laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face.

This hero is like no other hero I have ever read. Everything is stacked against him - the circumstances of his birth; his upbringing; his plethora of phobias, each and every one of them hammered into his soul by his foul harridan of a mother; allergies to everything outside the window; and the misfortune to be a source of attraction for any attack-minded bird or beast he comes within sight of.

And the poor sod has the misfortune to be blackmailed by the heroine, a pushy creature who we would today probably call a bully. It would have been grossly unfair of the author if she'd given this manhandling piece of work a gentle, gracious, loving parent. Thank the Lord she did not, but did in fact give the girl a mother who was every bit the foul harradin that the hero's mother was.

This is not your usual Regency romance. Nor is it the heroine's story - indeed, I can't even remember the girl's name, and I confess I never really got to know her or feel for her one way or the other. To me, her role in this story was more that of the walking embodiment of everything he had to overcome.

This is the hero's story, and beneath all the near hysterics I suffered reading this, there was a truly heartwarming tale of one man's personal courage as he consciously strove to change and grow into a better man.

Give it a go

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely loathed everything about Conrad Croome in the first book of this series (The Love Birds of Regent's Park), and I was desperately hoping to see him get him comeuppance in this one. However, he actually managed to redeem himself right off the bat to the point where by the end, I actually found myself enjoying his character (even if I did feel sorry for him for the things that had happened in his life).

As typical with Ms.Hartman's works, I found myself laughing out loud during several parts (beware the squirrels and geese at the Bird Sanctuary), as well as carrying my kindle around with me so that I could keep reading to find out what happened next.

I was especially pleased at the way things worked out for the pair in the end, even if I wished both of their mother's would do more than take a tumble in the lake. I hope that we will hear more from Ms.Hartman on this series (perhaps a novel with Cecilia in mind) as I look forward to catching up with my favorite love birds!

This novel will definitely appeal to those who like a sweet, clean romance as well as historical and regency lovers alike!

Loved this book. It was romantic, funny, light-hearted, showing claws and/or talons, and all the other things that Ruth is known for.

This is the first book written by Ruth Hartman that I've read. It was a struggle in the beginning as there were so many references to past incidents that were clearly from a prior book that I felt like a movie-goer who has arrived 20 minutes late and is trying to catch up. I'm very glad I stuck with it as it is a delightful, funny, and romantic story.

One thing that was clear from the beginning was that the main characters in this story had been vile secondary characters in the first book, and had created many roadblocks on the road to "happily ever after" for that story's main characters. I'm always delighted to find previous villains in a story of their own -- it always seems like there's no way their previous behavior can be explained, and yet it is.

There was one glaring error, however. Lady Lofton was already pregnant with another man's child when she tricked Lord Lofton into marrying her. The whole premise behind Amelia's blackmail threat was that he'd lose everything (house, money, title) and suffer a great scandal. However, the only loss would be to his family's reputation. Since his mother was married to the earl at the time of his birth, he was in the eyes of the law, his son.

This is the second story for the love bird series, and it was written very well. Love how ms. Hartman writes with the character's revealing their inner monologue, makes me laugh out loud. So charismatic these fun loving character's. So glad that Conrad is beginning a new journey to become a better person. If you like fun, clean quick whit regency period stories you will enjoy this one.
