Présentation de l'éditeur

This insider's account of the lives of Brian Jones, Keith Richard, and Mick Jagger in the sixties and seventies has become legendary in the years since its first publication in 1979. Tony Sanchez worked for Keith Richard for eight years - buying drugs, running errands, and orchestrating cheap thrills - and he records unforgettable accounts of the Stones' perilous misadventures: racing cars along the Cote d'Azur; murder at Altamont; nostalgic nights with the Beatles at the Stones-owned nightclub Vesuvio; frantic flights to Switzerland for blood changes; and the steady stream of women, including Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull, and Bianca Jagger. Here the Stones as never seen before, cavorting around the world, smashing Bentleys, working black magic, getting raided, having children, snorting coke, and mainlining heroin. Sanchez tells the whole truth, sparing not even himself in the process. With hard-hitting prose and candid photographs, he creates an invaluable primary source for anyone interested in the world's most famous rock and roll band.

I first read this in the '70s, shortly after it was published. I took it as gospel at the time and I probably cooled my love affair with the Stones quite a bit over it. I still love their music of course, that will never change.
Now 40 years or so later ... I find that a lot of what Mr. Sanchez had to say was crap, that the "blood cure" for Keith Richard (at the time he did not use the "s" ... which I also remember) was a medical impossibility and according to many others, simply not true, and that Tony S. had an agenda which others verified. So I decided to purchase it for less than $5 on Amazon and re-visit.
Good grief, did I really take this drivel as true? It's basically fan fiction written about the Stones by someone who happened to kinda sorta know them. Every darn person in the band or involved has soul baring inner thoughts and feeling interpreted by the author. Yeah so it's a novel. It is NOT a biography or tell-all memoir by someone in the know. It's fiction based on some events that did occur.
Is it interesting reading? Yes and no. Halfway through I was done with the long, rambling looks into what Tony Sanchez thought Keith or Marianne or Mick or Anita or Bianca were thinking at any given time in history, and stopped. Up until the aforementioned supposed "heroin blood cure" I was interested, but ehh. Glad I got it so cheap. ;)
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Unique, insightful and pulls no punches on the Stone's mad lifestyles during the 1970's. 3 mai 2017

The author adds in almost every sleazy detail of the Stone's hedonistic lifestyle, warts and all. I'm Sanchez could have written even worse stuff and most of it true, if not for the legal reasons but I'll never know, as it is this book has plenty of tales that he himself saw while being a member of the Stones inner circle. If you don't want your lofty opinion of this legendary rock ban ruined, you might want to steer clear - but for sleaze freaks like myself who eat this stuff up, it's dam near perfect. Exactly the style of writing I'm looking for, border-line litigious, and this book (mostly) delivers.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Sex , drugs, witchcraft, massive egos ...... And rock and roll. 30 mars 2016

My first memory of the Rolling Stones must of been the early eighties when they released " Start me up" , I was a young kid and my Dad was so excited to see them back! So I really had no idea about their early years and hadd only acquired vague preconceptions about them such as Mick Jaggers legendary lips, Keith Richards drug habit, someone called Brian Jones having drowned and Marianne Faithfull being a very old woman of 40ish who once went out with Mick Jagger! Well I just found this book fascinating and couldn't put it down! Who knew that things were so wild in the 60's what with witchcraft, orgies, concerts where people were killed by the Hells Angels, massive drug habits and police raids. I found myself sympathising with Brian Jones and telling everyone who would listen (my parents) what a terrible person that Mick Jagger is . Just a great read , a page turner and fascinating look at a bygone era where the term "sex , drugs and rock and roll " seems like a massive understatement.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A Little "Sex", A Lot of "Drugs", but Not Much "Rock n Roll" 13 juillet 2015

Provides little insight into the music, though the few tidbits are actually interesting. It's essentially a book about how the Stones did drugs, how they obtained drugs, and how they got caught or avoided getting caught. I thought there would be more intriguing stories since Tony had such first-hand knowledge. I figured the 1 year in Villefranche alone at Nellcote recording Exile would've brought more stories than just the one about Keith getting the boat.

I really enjoyed the book. But then again I am a Rolling Stones music lover. How much is actual truth, how much is exaggeration and how much is out of context myth...I don't know but it excites the reader and in some cases sickens them. A sort of newspaper look account (sordid, petty details, scandal) of the time this guy spent around one of the most famous and legendary rock n roll bands the world has ever had. In reality they were just young lads having fun, writing fabulous music, a love of blues, being silly, getting drunk, taking drugs and acting up. They were young guys having fun....which at times became more serious problems.....much of the Stones reputation is of course a mix of exaggerated media myth with little truth, hype and truth..it sells records and much is just people's take on what happened when they were around them. Much were just things that happened around them but their only connection was, that they were there (Altamont speedway open air concert for example). They were a band of the times and the rebellion of the 60's...this easy to read and captivating..it transports you into their world and tells a colourful tale of drugs, sex and rock n roll. So if that is your bag then read away.
