I liked many of the thoughts and insights this book brought my way and the meditations and other practices such as the Kung Fu stances are nice. I like the sleep meditation. I appreciate the web links to the chapters of the book which have videos demonstrating most, if not all, of the practices, both the meditations and stances etc.
What didn't work for me was the foul language. I didn't expect that from a presumably enlightened person, namely a monk, but that's just me. Seems silly and immature. I would have given more stars except for the language. I also wanted to share parts of this with others but am reluctant due to language.

This book is called the Urban Monk. The author is going to be a little edgier and use that "S" word. This is not a book written for young adults or children, so the use of profanity and edgy talk is fine in this context. If this is something that will bother you, please consider this before purchasing. This book has a load of practical good advice for those looking to live a more focused, less stressful, purposeful, peaceful life while still living in a modern urban world of city traffic and carpools, deadlines, over-filled calendars, and the feeling of being pulled in every direction just making you feel like you're losing control of your life. This is not your typical touchy-feely book found in this genre. Dr. Shojai provides practical tips such as meditation, figuring out what your priorities are, Qi Gong exercises, etc, to help you reset your life and get back in control. When I read this book, I felt like Dr. Shojai knew exactly what kind of time and scheduling restraints I'm dealing with, which made me want to try his advice. So far, I have to say it's worked wonders!

This book is like Navy Seal training for everyday life. If you are looking for another "warm and fuzzy" hand holding self help book, you might want to skip this one. Pedram is blunt and obviously knows his stuff. Some argue that the information in this book is nothing new, I disagree, but even so it is sometimes the delivery method that hits home. I challenge you to not find anything in this book that you can not relate to, especially if there are things in your life that don't seem to be working. Get with the program, get off your ass, read the book, do the work...watch your life change, for the better.

Honestly I wish I could have read more to really evaluate the book but couldn't get past reliance on the "S" word as others have commented. Which seems odd for me to write because in informal occasions I have been known to use pretty colorful language myself and am usually not easily offended. I can understand using a "shock" word once or maybe twice to break a pattern. At first-I was amused and thought it seemed like he was keeping it "real". Then it was simply overused and became a tad unprofessional. I think I only made it to the second chapter and flipped through the book to get the gist of it. I would have liked to have been able to read more because I liked the message and the topics outlined seemed interesting.

I have read the book twice now. After the first reading, I got a few practical tips on how to re-prioritize my life to accomplish the things that are truly important to me. But the real breakthroughs happened when I did the Qi Gong exercises he posted online in the resources. Once I did those daily, I noticed immediately that I was calmer and had less stress each day. After a month I had gone from having daily high anxiety to zero anxiety. I am not exaggerating. The people whose stories he describes in each chapter will be familiar to you because they are how virtually everyone lives their lives. Those people improved as well, by also doing the work Pedram gave them. Doing work is not popular advice, so if you are likely to read the book and move on without even attempting the exercises or the changes he suggests, you probably won't get much from it. But if you do the work, you will notice real improvements in your health life. If you think you don't have time to add these exercises to your busy life, the great news is Pedram gives you tons of practical advice to be more productive throughout your day. Once you make those changes, you will have 15 minutes daily for some Qi Gong.

After reading the book the second time, I committed to trying even more of the exercises, and I realized there is significant wisdom in this book. Much more than was apparent the first time through. The exercises such as rooting energy down through the earth or heart meditation may seem simple, but they work wonders as well. Do not skip over those.

Highly recommended.
