We're a longtime vegetarian family for animal compassion reasons and plan to raise our son (now 5 months old) the same way. We preordered this book based on the premise and weren't entirely sure what to expect, but had high hopes. It was not a disappointment in any way. Beautifully illustrated with catchy rhymes and an underlying message of compassion that should be taught at any age to vegans and carnivores alike. Our son loves the pictures and sits happily in my lap while I read to him. At some point, as he gets older, this book will help open up the dialogue on many important subjects about earth stewardship and animal compassion. Really hoping this author and illustrator collaborate on additional books.

HASH(0x8db46e64) étoiles sur 5 More for the basics of compassion than for learning the alphabet 10 octobre 2015

I think that this is my top choice so far out of the Ruby Roth books. I have a one-year-old and a three-year-old. Both "Vegan is Love" and "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals" have slightly heavier content. I have read them all to my daughter (the 3-year-old) and I have no intention of shielding her from those truths during her upbringing, but I think learning basic compassion and the alphabet are just more important during this age.

V is for Vegan has colorful illustrations that catch my daughter's eye and get her interested. Each letter is shown in both the capital and lower case version which is useful for teaching letter recognition. We have quite a few alphabet books and it is always nice to see her point at the letters and excitedly announce what they are. She does that with this book. However, I would definitely list this as more of a vegan book than an alphabet book. The illustrations and texts paired with the letters are not an obvious link between the two. For example: "Jj is for jail, like zoos and their bars." The picture that goes with that is a lion behind bars. My daughter says "poor lion" but it is the lion that she remembers, not the jail. But J is not for Lion and L is dedicated to legumes.

This book is meant to rhyme and rhyming is part of what keeps children's books so entertaining and fun. Yet there are some extra words on a few of the pages which my daughter insists on hearing, so it takes away from the rhymes. An example would be the beans on the page about legumes being labeled, and the same with the grains for the letter G.

I read in the Vegetarian Times review, "Move over, Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss!", but that had to have just been an exaggeration. I love that Ruby Roth is coming out with books geared towards raising compassionate, vegan children. You can see that there is so much heart poured into her work. That is why this book got 5 stars from me, when maybe it only deserved 4. Seeing my daughter sit with the book, open it up, and say not to eat animals filled me with too much joy to give it any less, but it doesn't compare to Silverstein or Seuss. Although I very much enjoy having the words of this book to impact my children, and although the illustrations are colorful and fun, they do not pull you into the story and world created like those other authors do. Perhaps her future books will. I look forward to finding out.

Bought this to begin introducing the concept of living a vegan lifestyle to our son, who IS living a vegan lifestyle and just doesn't know that other people eat animals, cow's milk, eggs, etc. "That's Why We Don't Eat Animals" is still a bit too old for him.

We liked the ideas connecting insects held in glass jars to zoos as jails for exotic animals. Loved the introduction of where eggs come from. I didn't eat eggs as a child once I found out the general location where they came out. For a child it is enough to know where eggs come from. As a teen or adult, a person may want to understand the discomfort and pain a hen is subjected to laying eggs, even if she is "free range" and cared for, she still has to go through the pain of laying an egg.

This book is about kindness. It is thought-provoking for any person of any age.

An adorable book that I bought for my niece. I hope she can learn to stay compassionate and follow in my footsteps to becoming an activist of animals :)
