Présentation de l'éditeur

The war that began on Hayden's World years ago has blossomed into a brawl across the stars, and yet that single and otherwise largely unimportant colony continues to be a central point in the conflagration. Human forces have pushed outward, now taking enemy worlds in response to the attacks on their own, but they don't have the numbers or the power to hold what they take.

Now the alien Alliance shows a sliver of it's true power, and the war for domination of the skies over Hayden burns brightly once more. Neither side has any intentions of giving up the game, and both sides have plenty more aces held back against a rainy day.

A fiery rain is coming, and when it passes the future of the entire Orion-Cygnus Arm of our Galaxy will be decided.

Admiral Nadine Brooke, Captain Jane MacKay, and Sergeant Sorilla Aida intend to make certain it's decided in humanity's favor.

Valkyrie Burning is Book Three of the Hayden War Cycle. Books One and Two are On Silver Wings and Valkyrie Rising, both are available here on Amazon under Evan Currie's author page. The final novel of the Cycle, Book Four - the Valhalla Call - is now available on Amazon Kindle.

I swear every novel in this series should start with "when we last saw our heroine Sorilla Aida." Sure it has other main characters, but she seems to steal the show. The entire series is a pretty good read with each novel having at least one ground and space battle telling the story of humanity's first interstellar war. It's just that Sergeant Aida seems like such a more interesting character then the admirals and captains manning the space ships. Valkyrie Burning tries hard to focus more on the space battles then previous books and these sections are well written, filled with strategy, and full of surprises. But nothing is as cool as sliding down a space elevator after taking sniper shots at enemy forces while free falling towards terminal velocity. I cross my fingers that Evan Curie spins off Sorilla Aida in a separate series after he wraps this one up in the next book.

This installment in the series was bizarre. First, the author changed the spelling of one character's name (General Kayne/Kane). Second, a couple characters seemed to have entirely different personalities (for instance, Jerry Reed). Add to that random details having changed (Sorilla was 6'1" in an earlier book, 5'9" here; Admiral Brookes' aide Denise seems to have disappeared) and useless references to Sorilla being topless quite often ... this book honestly seemed to have been written by another person.

The proofreading errors I can live with, but the character inconsistencies drove me nuts! The story maybe could have been more satisfying had the characters been in line with the earlier installments.

That said I do appreciate the story and the book.

Author Evan Currie has clearly hit his stride with this one. It starts off tense, has a nice little lull for character development and storyline, and then gives the reader exactly what he/she wants.

Sorilla is back, as are the naval officers, and Currie inserts enough detail for people with bad memories (like me) to remember just who everyone is. Once the action starts, it doesn't stop, even when the reader and characters think there's going to be a lull in the action. The story's full of heroism, luck, and fun tech, and the combat is done just right: fast-paced and unpredictable. And though other reviewers may disagree, I thought the surprise ending was perfect...You can tell that in the next book, some aliens are going to learn a thing or two about the human race.

I hope this indie writer gets picked up by the mainstream soon; this series would translate to film very, very well. Hollywood? Are you awake?

The Alliance is concerned as the Ros’EL have asked for help to defeat the human colonist on the planet Hayden. The Ros’EL are the most powerful race in the alliance, after all they can destroy entire planets and have easily done so in past wars. The Fleet Master, Reethan Parath is suspicious of the Ros’El’s motives. What have they gotten the Alliance into now? Who are these humans that the powerful Ros’EL can't seem to handle on their own….?

I got hooked on this series of books written by Evan Curie. It is great Science Fiction and his writing style and storyline seen to be a combination like Starship Troopers and the Halo’s Master Chief. The main difference is that his primary character is a super warrior named Sargent Sorillia and she is truly something else. Modified with the latest technology and armor that mankind has developed she is a unmatched soldier that is an unstoppable force. Even the toughest warriors of the Alliance find that fighting her is a real problem.

I really liked this book and the storyline is full of top notch action and adventure. For me these books have been on par with the best books written on the Halo series. I love military Sci-Fi and this is a great series. I have already purchased the next two books in the series.

When we last saw our heroine, Sorilla Aida, she was kicking ass in Hayden.... Well, guess what? She's still kicking ass in Hayden (or had been until she fought Kris, an alien special forces operative, who turned the other cheek on her so to speak). I gotta hand it to Mr Currie-- not all men can come even vaguely close or even want to try--to write a female protagonist. And after I read the first series that I read by Currie, I wouldn't have figured him for one to try. I read the Odyssey One series and noted that there is a fair-sized dollop of sexism that runs through his writing.
Am I hypersensitive about that? Sometimes. But after having been an official s-f nerd for a long time, it does get to one. And I have become sensitive to characters saying to their troops "Men--with me!" when they've just described the heroic actions of one of the female troops that are being called "men".
But on the whole, Sorilla Aida rocks. Believable? Heck no! But then, that's one of my favorite things about s-f. And Currie has a great grasp on the science and math behind a lot of the cool tech toys he comes up with for Aida et al to play with and to help generally create mayhem. As I am a laid-back psychologist, she is my alter-ego and I wanna grow up to be just like her. What the hey--I DO have to look up some of the theories and other solid scientific concepts at times. I had forgotten things like Alcubierre's theory so I needed a refresher on that as well as a few equations related to space/time, gravity and so on but that's a good thing--at least in MY opinion. If a novel will make me hit one of my undergrad science texts, what more can I ask for?
A word about the editing--I read the comments on the 5th volume in this series and its problems with proofreading and editing. Kind of comes with the territory of self- published books. And proofreaders and editors add to the cost of the books we buy. But hey--I remember the older fanzines that were TYPED. No word processor, and definitely no spell check. And the errors were, upon occasion, atrocious but what the heck--you wanna pay $15 for each new book (or wait a year or so till it comes out in p-b) or you wanna live your passion and read those books? In the best world, writers would be able to write, proof, and edit (not to mention checking continuity) all they put out. But they don't and unless it gets really bad, it's irritating but not a deal-breaker. Would be kind of nice if Mr Currie would do just a bit more though.
I previously complained about all of Currie's characters "smirking" and how tired of it I am. I'm not the only one to comment on that either. I'm beginning to have similar issues about all of the characters growling, showing their teeth (tho Kris does it because he's a Lucian Sentinel), and being all "feral". Real near the button for spell check on the Word program is a button for the thesaurus and it has some interesting alternatives. I would suggest checking that particular function out.
Other than that-- a great way to spend time on the beach, by the pool, in the sun, on the patio, waiting for that doctor who is "running late"...or just using your imagination to let this great storyteller tickle your mind.
