Présentation de l'éditeur

A powerful exploration of one man's battle with self-doubt and fear.
Why is it that we destroy the things we love most? This is the question Paulo Coelho faces in this touching story about his confrontation with his past. In The Valkyries, Paulo and his wife, Cristina, embark on a forty-day quest into the starkly beautiful and sometimes dangerous Mojave Desert, where they encounteer the Valkyries, strange warrior women who travel the desert on motorcycles.

A masterful blend of the exotic locales, dramatic adventure, and stark storytelling for which Coelho's fictional works are renowned, this true-life odyssey is at once a modern-day adventure story and a poignant message about letting go of the past and believing in the future.

Quatrième de couverture

A Magical Tale About Forgiving Our Past and Believing in Our Future

The enchanting, true story of The Valkyries begins in Rio de Janeiro when author Paulo Coelho gives his mysterious master J., the only manuscript for his book The Alchemist. Haunted by a devastating curse, Coelho confesses to J., "I′ve seen my dreams fall apart just when I seemed about to achieve them." In response, J. gives Coelho a daunting task: He must find and speak with his guardian angel. "The curse can be broken," he replies, "if you complete the task."

Rising to the challenge, Paulo and his wife, Cristina, drop everything, pack their bags, and take off on a forty day adventure into the starkly beautiful and sometimes dangerous Mojave Desert where they encounter more than they bargained for. A masterful blend of the exotic locales, dramatic adventure, and magical storytelling, for which Coelho′s fictional works are renowned, this true-life account is at once a modern-day adventure and a metaphysical odyssey.

An autobiographical trip story by Paulo Coelho on his way to meet his angel, very powerful. Great if you believe in angels, and twice as great if you also are about to handle a big crisis in your life !! ;-)

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good, but not his best - I'd read "The Witch of Portobello" first/instead. 6 décembre 2013

I'm a big fan of Paulo Coelho and I really love the majority of his books. This one didn't resonate with me as much as some of his others. This may be because it is largely autobiographical or perhaps because it has a significant Christian slant as oppose to his other books which are simply spiritual/mystical or fascinatingly pagan/wiccan. In it, Coehlo recounts time he spent traveling the Mojave Desert with his wife and "the Valkyries". The Valkyries are a band of women who travel the desert on motorcycles and spread their teachings to those who will listen. All in all it was a good and interesting read but once I was halfway through, it became more of a chore to finish rather than a pleasure. Considering the length of Coelho's books this didn't take long, but I wasn't nearly as invested in the journey or outcome as I was with say, "Brida" or "The Witch of Portobello". And, ironically (considering these characters were real people), I didn't much care what happened to them. It feels a little unfair to give this book a numerical rating because what a reader takes from the book can be largely subjective, but this piece of writing failed to move me in ways that other books of his have.

I love love and I love Coelho but I don't really love his books of excerpted quotes. He is a great storyteller but the individual lines really don't carry the impact. Read one of his novels instead.

This is a testament and a call to action. This book reminds us that we should resist giving into hopelessness when what is happening seems too terrible and cruel. We must make a stand instead of hiding or seeking personal security. I was left asking myself what am I doing to let love guide my actions, and what is the gift I have to make the world better? Ten different people can look at the same painting and walk away with 10 different impressions of it. Paulo Coelho's writing is as skillful and intriguing as any masterful piece of art. Everyone who reads this book will walk away with the understanding of it that s/he is suppose to have. It has been two days since I read the last line and I am still processing it. Some readers will be very skeptical about Coelho's quest. While others, will find themselves feeling that the book is speaking directly to them. To be honest, I don't usually do books that are religious in nature or too touchy feely. However, I could not put this book down (even throughout the parts that frightened me a bit). Coelho, through his masterful use of simple language has created a vivid, thought provoking, and unforgettable experience. I will be pondering this book for many years to come.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 and especially startling if you read and loved The Alchemist 11 décembre 2014

This work is a departure for Coehlo, and especially startling if you read and loved The Alchemist. This is much more a fantasy, but is loaded with Catholic dogma, but rich in quotable passages, that make Coelho a gifted writer. I had difficulty with believing that all of this actually transpired, which he says is true, at the end of the story. If you're a fan of his, he doesn't disappoint in terms of being able to glean pearls of wisdom, but be prepared for a wild ride while possibly suspending belief.
