Let's face it... almost all of the Verve releases have been hit and miss. On one end, you'll have fantastically beautiful re-interpretations like MJ Cole's UK Garage remix of How Long Has This Been Going On, RJD2's hip-hop/plunderphonic remix of The Gentle Rain, and the Album Leaf's moody, glitchy rework of Lilac Wine. On the other, you'll have stuff like Max Sedgley's rather pointless cover of the Peter Gunn theme, that Evil Ways remix from Volume 4 by no one I can remember, and unfortunately, most of the Christmas album. But be fair, anytime you get 10-14 artists remixing 10-14 different tracks from 10-14 different sets of source material, they statistically can't ALL please everyone all of the time. What's important is how they fit together as an album, and how that album expresses the current sound of the electronica scene at the time.

Which is why, in my opinion, this is at least as good, if not better, than the first ever Verve:Remixed. To this day i'm not much of a fan of that Tricky/Tool remix of Strange Fruit from V:R1, but it's still a solid example of trip-hop from that era. And taken in that context, everything else on there is gold in one way or another (if not actually gold ;). That's exactly how i feel about this album. Everything from RAC's funky, but rather basic remix of Too Darn Hot, to Maya Jane Cole's gorgeous deep house rework of Blue Skies, to the massive D'n'B crusher Zed's Dead extracts from Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, to... whatever you call that DJ Vicious & Victor Niglio remix of I've Got You Under My Skin. Electro-dubtrap-bounce-anthem? In any case, i thought it was ridiculous at first... turns out it's amazing, just like everything else on here (honestly, it's worth it just for Flume's "Woman of the Ghetto"). In any case, it's a fantastic sampling of current electronica styles and production techniques, by really amazing artists doing what they do best, whether or not you're initially into it (i'm not normally a huge fan of Pretty Lights or electro/dubsteppy stuff in general, but their remix is pure, unadulterated class). So if you just relax and let them do their thing, they're bound to make you a fan, and possibly even expand your musical horizons in the process =) Definitely worth a purchase if you're into electronic music of any kind.

...Incidentally, to all the people who post 1-star reviews on Verve:Remix albums because they're "not faithful to the original", a.) you're missing the point of these releases COMPLETELY, b.) you're not helping AT ALL, since you probably don't even listen to or know anything about electronic music, and c.) Verve already knows about you, and for some reason supports you with concurrent releases entitled Verve:UNmixed. Guess what's on there? Remastered originals! You'd probably know this if you weren't over on the Weezer albums posting reviews like "i only listened to the clips, but this sounds nothing like the Beach Boys! i'm SUPER disappointed. dunno what all the fuss is about." :P

HASH(0x8e84c870) étoiles sur 5 Too Darn Hot 31 juillet 2013
Par C. Badders - Publié sur Amazon.com
Its been several years since the last Verve Remixed collection and its great to hear some new remixes. The remixes on this CD are very well done as per usual. Trippy, varied and each one with its own unique style. Returning favorites like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Astrud Gilberto, and Billie Holiday are included. And its awesome to hear Sister Rosetta included this time around. Her 'Jericho' is a pretty sweet remix and is one of my faves. 'Too Darn Hot' by Ella is another standout. And its so nice to hear my favorite Astrud Gilberto song remixed so nicely. All in all a solid addition to the verve remixed series. The remixes are all great!

I have earlier versions of the "Verve Remixed" series in my collection. Based upon the excellent presentations of those recordings, I purchased "The First Ladies", fully expecting a recording that showcased -- as did the earlier Remixes -- the voices of the singers themselves. I had based my purchase on the manner in which Verve had sensitively remixed and updated the originals of songs from "Verve Remixed 2". It was a stunning idea to update and enrobe the vocalizations of great singers in a manner which brought them, again, to the forefront of the music-listening public. However, in "The First Ladies", the remixes have taken possession of the tracks, overwhelming them -- and in many cases, making the originals barely recognizable -- so that "The First Ladies" has become a recording, not about the First Ladies of Verve, but of the remixes themselves. DJ Carnage, for example, has lived up to his name, wreaking havoc over the vocalizations of the magnificent voice of Dinah Washington, while Nina Simone, with "Put a Spell on You", has become subsumed by Pretty Lights. "Verve Remixed, The First Ladies" is a great disappointment.

All I can say is that this release is fantastic. I find it very engaging and it isn't totally compressed to the %^$@ house. If your a purist, remember they don't call these releases "remixed" for nothing. This is a great way to enjoy those old classics in a whole new way and introduce some of the most talented musicians to a new generation.
