HASH(0x8a23d2c4) étoiles sur 5 Great song, great bonuses, great value 25 avril 2006

If it is one thing that Rage Against the Machine does well, it is piss the crap out of completists. They have a ton of singles, bootlegs, compilations, alternate live performances and so on and so forth. Actually, it is quite out of control. But everything that Rage Against the Machine touches becomes gold, and that is no different then on this superb single, or EP, or whatever the hell you want to call it. And with the price that it is, one copy for $9.99, I am surprised die-hard Rage fans aren't jumping all over this like I was when I actually saw the track listing. Out of the dozens and dozens of Rage singles and bootlegs I have in my collection, which are all in CD or CD-R/CD-RW format and absolutely no filesharing, the Vietnow single is one of my favourites.

The first song, Vietnow, is from Rage's 1996 sophomore effort "Evil Empire". The song, claimed by Rage fans, is too dragged out and boring. I don't believe that. The song starts off with scratching beat, a routine common in "Evil Empire". The song eventually goes into the famous line "turn on the radio, na, f**k it, turn it off" and then there is the chorus, which is extremely catchy. After those two parts are repeated, there is an outro, in which yet another famous Rage line "is all the world jails and churches?" is spoken by Zack de la Rocha. Zack's rapping is as good as it always is, and the lyrics are very strong, which are about left-wing AM radio shows. One of my favorite Rage songs. And, of course, Tom Morello shines like the guitar god he is, Timmy C. plays his usual awesome bass and Brad Wilk's drumming is cool. The only bad thing about this song is the production, which was bad on "Evil Empire", but it does add a raw feel, which is always good for rap.

Then the rarities and single exclusives. Track 2 is "Clear The Lane", a song that Rage fans are probably familiar with if they were ever at old shows, have bootlegs or possess the "Live & Rare" CD. I actually love this song, and even though it is a common rarity and probably a b-side of their 1992 self-titled, it still owns. The next song is "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos", a Public Enemy cover. Since Public Enemy is one of the three rap artists I like (Rage is one of the three), I own the album "It Takes A Nation Of Millions..." and this song is on it. And the Rage cover may be better then the original. Next is a common live song played at all Rage shows, "Zapata's Blood". I prefer the other live exclusive song "No Shelter" over Zapata, but I cannot complain because it is also a great live song. Rage owns live, and even a descent song like Zapata's Blood shows that.

So, overall, a 5/5. This is not really that rare, and it may be available on Amazon or eBay or any other individual bootleg and rare singles dealer. You may even find it at a Mom & Pop music store. Don't try chain stores like F.Y.I. or Tower, because you will be shut out. So, if you have a slight interest in Rage Against the Machine, rap, rock or 90's music, get this single right now. I love extreme metal, but it's hard not to love this band, and they remain one of the only three nu-metal/rap-metal band I respect. Also, get their four studio albums, their two live albums, and the three DVD's for start. You will not be disappointed.

Not a bad buy, for those who have the killng in the name single clear the lane is the same version found on there so nothing new here and an odd choice of song.

Intro/zapata's blood is a great song, although the transition from intro into zapata's blood has a noticeable gap, which seems stupid considering its basically one song, but if you look past this mixing stuff up its still a worthwhile single.
