The unit itself is pretty heavy and has rubber/plastic feet on the bottom. This is great since with lighter units, the weight of the cables can make it lift off the table. Another pleasant surprise is the lack of blindingly bright LEDs. many times, they are so bright, i have to put tape over them so it is not distracting. For this one, that is not the case. Buttons all feel solid and I like the buttons on the remote much more than the membrane type on many switch remotes.
For operation, I had no idea how much I would love the auto switch function. I have a computer, xbox, and chromecast hooked up and in use, the chromecast is always displayed until another device is turned on. when that device is turned off, it switches back to the chromecast which is perfect for me. If you switch inputs with the remote, it overrides the auto switch function. I also use the SPDIF out and it has been flawless as well. I have not used the analog outputs yet so I cannot comment on those.
All in all, a solid choice.
I have all three external sources connected to the HDMI switch with the Toslink out connected to the soundbar and the HDMI out connected to the ARC HDMI input on the television. In most regards, the switch operates exactly as intended. It converts the 5.1 ch DD stream from the television's ARC to Toslink and outputs it to the soundbar whenever the television's internal tuner is being used, it correctly converts either 5.1 ch DTS or DD streams from the HDMI signal from the external sources to Toslink out, and reliably switches to the proper external source, depending on which source is powered on at the time. The switch has certainly reduced the number of required cables and has allowed me to use the limited number of 5.1 ch compatible inputs on the Vizio with all of my 5.1 ch compatible sources. Additionally, it has made life much easier by eliminating the requirement to switch inputs on both the television and the soundbar. At this point, it would seem that this switch is a prefect solution for my setup. However, this isn't quite the case.
I was hoping that once setup, I could leave the switch powered on and just leave it alone, aside from having to reconfigure after the occasional power outage. There is however, one issue which keeps it from being a completely "set it and forget it" solution, and it MAY be specific to my particular model of television. Whenever I turn on the television, the HDMI switch "SPDIF/LR" setting reverts to LR analog output, and has to be reset to SPDIF output every time the television is powered on. This requires either keeping the HDMI switch remote control accessible on the coffee table or switching the option on the unit itself. It also causes a bit of confusion when guests are using the system. Admittedly, this is a minor nuisance, but one which I feel warrants a reduction of a star.
Very good quality as I didn't see any difference between it and the regular HDMI cords. That's digital for ya!
In short it works as expected and it works very well. I recommend this because a lot of HDMI switcher do not allow switching when the machine is in sleep mode so this was important let alone in a regular operating format. This doo dad is about as good as they come and it's quite inexpensive too compared to others and you do not need to buy an HDMI cord for the HDMI switcher since it has an HDMI tail.
