A book which brought back feelings of nostalgia for the days when no-one counted calories and food was packed with flavour. This book shows us how to produce cakes and cookies with the help of vintage recipes from 1917. Also included are tips on the preparation of ingredients in cake baking and the process of making cakes. With the use of modern kitchen gadgets it's possible to get the same results as the housewife of 1917 with far less labour. An interesting addition to a cookbook collection.

I like old recipes, and bake from my grandmother's recipes, many of which have no directions. Some of the recipes in this book are not often seen, and I looked forward to trying them. However, I have the impression that the author either didn't try many of them, or badly needs an editor. One recipe calls for adding all the flour at two separate times. At least two of the cookie recipes, and the donut recipe, have a great deal of butter or lard, sugar, and milk or cream, but no flour at all. I admit, I didn't try the recipes -- because I don't see how you could cut out such a cookie or donut, as called for, and I didn't want to make a big mess. I did look for a way to contact the author, to ask if there have been revisions, but I can't find any contact information, so I probably will not use this book.

Author Wilma Sossamann has written a cookbook filled with back to the basics recipes, recipes often prepared by our grandmothers and mothers, as their recipes often used basic ingredients while producing maximum flavor. I am glad to see some of these recipes back in print so they will not be forgotten as they are typically keep her recipes.

Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include:

Devil's Food Cake
Delicate Muffins
Crab Apple Relish

Note: It seems the canning recipes lack processing times as the recipes say something like put into clean jars and seal instead of using actual processing times. You could probably prepare the relish recipes and freeze them, if you like.

What is amazing about the recipes is the large amount of supplies, 11 eggs for one cake (bread)?
Each recipe comes with title, list of ingredients and tips on preparing via translation of what it means in today's world,
There are few photos and no nutritional information.

These are the recipes from Wanda's own Grandmother Annie. They dated back to 1917 and sometimes earlier. They were treasures she shared with the world. Don't miss out on The Sunshine Cake. It is so rich and decadent. I love lemon flavored desserts and with my second attempt I added lemon zest to bump of the flavor a notch (try it the way the recipe says first, you may not like so much lemon flavor). You can also substitute orange extract and zest.

Ginger Snaps were my other favorite. I ended up making about eight dozen of these. The ginger flavor really pops in them. These recipes will take you back to your own grandmother's kitchen. Now I share them with my own family. Check out Vintage Recipes from 1917 Cookies, Cakes and Pies, Oh My! and see if you do not travel back to your own youth.

I just loved this cookbook of vintage recipes; not only because of the great, old-fashioned recipes but because they are personal to the author and belonged to her grandmother. She found them in an old family trunk and decided to share them in this book. It brought back sweet memories for me to read through some of the recipes because I used to watch my grandmother bake pies and cakes as a child.

Inside this book you will find some really delicious recipes for cakes, pies, candy, muffins and several different types of cookies. Since these recipes are nearly 100 years old, many of them I have never heard of and I've never seen in other cookbooks. I look forward to trying out many of these sweet delicacies soon!
