"If you like the TV series Bones, then you'll love Virals." (James Patterson) --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

Présentation de l'éditeur

When Tory Brennan's mother dies suddenly she is sent to live with the father she has never met on a remote island in South Carolina. Tory might find getting to know her dad difficult, but she has no trouble making friends with the island's other teenage inhabitants: Shelton, Hi and Ben. They quickly form their own gang, united against the snobby pupils of the high school they all attend.

Things change dramatically for them, though, when they rescue a sick wolf-dog puppy who they find locked in a secret cage in a research laboratory. The four nurse him through his illness in their bunker hideout, until he is better. But it's not long before they all fall sick. Could their illness have something to do with the puppy? And why is the head of the laboratory so interested in their health?

Sneaking back onto the island to try to find out what's going on the four are shocked to discover some long-buried human bones. But they are not the only ones wandering on the island that night, and when shots are fired the gang are forced to run for their lives. Suddenly Tory feels she could run all night. Shelton sees more sharply; Hi can smell odours he's never noticed before. And Ben's eyes have changed colour.

Alarmed by the change in each other, they retreat to their bunker. It's clear they have become involved in something fatally dangerous, and somehow they need to discover what is going on before somebody silences them for good. And if what they suspect is true, that somehow they have developed canine capabilities, then harnessing those powers could be the only way to save themselves. --Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

Gold Star Award Winner!

Tory and her father live on an island reserved for the faculty who work at the remote research facility on a nearby island. She and her friends often explore the research island. One day, she convinces them to break into the facility to use their equipment in rejuvenating a dog tag ID they found in the woods.

While they have no problems cleaning the dog tags, they discover a missing wild puppy locked in a cage. Outraged, they immediately break Coop out and hide him in their secret cavern.

Tory and her friends take turns caring for the puppy while also trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the dog tags. They search the library, where they uncover clues to the identity of the man. Unfortunately, their search triggers a reaction. Someone doesn't want that information uncovered, and they'll do almost anything to keep Tory and her friends from learning and sharing the truth.

Coop is sick, sick with a strand of virus that infects Tory and her friends. Suddenly, they're having hot flashes, blacking out, and using bursts of adrenaline to execute inhuman feats. These feats occur in times of extreme danger - being followed, chased, shot at, or while breaking into secure buildings.

VIRALS is Kathy Reichs' first foray into the young adult world, and she knocks it out of the park. After a slow start, the tension, drama, danger, mystery, and the strange virus pulsing through the characters' bodies make this book extraordinarily hard to put down. I'm already waiting for the next book in the series.

Bonne lecture

I was a bit worried about this spin off by k.Reichs as it seemed to be aimed more at kids than adults, however after the first few chapters you really get into the book. It has all the great suspense, story and characters that you would expect to find in a Kathy Reichs book. Loved it and recommend it!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Virals by Kathy and Brendan Reichs 1 juin 2013

This is another book mistakenly listed as for Youthful readers. If one is into the Paranormal, adults will truly enjoy "Virals" the first in a new seres. The heroine, Tory Brennan, the grandniece of the Bones Serie star, Temperance Brennan, is 14 year old, has just lost her mother in an aut accident and has moved in with her father, a scientist living on one of the islands of the coast of South Carolina, and working in an animal reserve and research laboratory on another. She has three friends, boys from the age of 14 to 16 who are children of other employees on the same research laboratry island. The four of them are enrolled in a posh school on the mainland and are outcasts there.

Curios kids, they investigate one of the labs and find a puppy, a half wolf / half German Shepherd offspring of the wild wolf inhabitants of the island, hooked up to all sorts of wires an tubes--with his cage marked for his extermination. They grab the pup and run back to their own island home.

And each comes down with whatever has infected the pup, with varying degrees of illness. Tory's dad refuses to let her have a pet, so the four kids keep the pup in an old abandoned WWII defense bunker they've found on their island.

Tory's dad's employer, the doctor who's lab they stole the pup from, finds them and warns them that they might have unfortunate results from the illness they contracted from the dog--just as their bunker is attacked by unknown gun shooting men. The doctor sends the kids and pup through the escape tunnel, then collapses it so the kid can escape, but is killed in the aftermath.

The rest of the book is devoted to finding out who and why they were attacked, what has happened to them as result of catching the dog's virus, and learning what to do with themselves with these new powers.

Tory's life is complicated by a crush on the richest kid in school, and n Charlotte society, her dad's ditzy girlfriend who insists she prepare for her "comng out"--something the tom-boy Tory is not interested in at all, and the way the snobby kids in heir school treat these outsiders.

All in all a fun and interesting book to read--IF one is interested in anything paranormal.

First off, I do not think this book is young adult. It reads much more like middle grade.

At the beginning I did not like the voice of the main character. I thought the author was searching too hard to capture today's youth and coming up with something that was just hard to read. Over the course of the book, I became more used to the voice and it was less bothersome.

I like that there is a strong girl protagonist who is not pitted against other girls. So many books about girls don't seem to think that a girl can stand up to boys or men as the antagonist. Also, the main character has four friends who are all boys. Not sure if that is good or not, but she is definitely their leader.

There are a couple of inconsistencies in the book. For example, at one point one of the kids describes the World War 1 as being in this century. Even I don't consider that this century since that was in the 20th century and we are now in the 21st. Plus all the kids in the book would have been born after the turn of the millennium so the 1910s would seem like ancient history to them. In fact, given that it is now 2015, WW1 was more than 100 years ago.

That's all pretty minor though. The book gets off to a slow start, although interesting. By the end it has picked up a lot of momentum, becoming something of a thriller. There is a bit of blood, gore, and murder involved but not more than your average kid could handle.

Very entertaining. If I could, I'd give it a 3.7 out of 5 stars. As an adult who likes to check out YA material occasionally, I was pleased that Kathy Reichs and her son Brendan did such a good job of creating interesting characters you want to know better. Some timeline issues were glossed over, some POV switches were handled awkwardly, certain locations received better descriptions than others, and three supporting characters came off as somewhat black and white. I would have also enjoyed knowing more about the parents as well (especially as one of them was featured prominently in a Bones story a few years ago), but they were given a treatment that reminded me of the adults in the Peanuts comic strips. That said, overall the story and main characters helped compensate for these minor shortcomings. Kathy Reichs has done such a beautiful job of creating a world for Tempe Brennan, and has followed suit here, creating a different, detailed world for Tempe's teenaged niece and her friends. While it is clearly directed toward young people, the young people (both characters and readers) are not talked down at. The emphasis on science is also handled well, making it intriguing without using what young people might feel is a sledgehammer. And I appreciated how the characters generally worked out their own solutions to problems they encountered without requiring too much of the pesky Deus ex Machina. I also enjoyed the particular conceit created for these characters to make them "special." (Vampires as superheroes are really tiring me out.) I look forward to reading the next book in the series, and suspect that some the issues I encountered here may well be resolved. I hope at least to no longer "hear" the Peanuts trombone speaking for the parents, as the relationships young people have with their families is as important the relationships they create as they develop personal autonomy. The latter was given more emphasis here for reasons that may be due to the needs of this particular story, but need not be the case for all of the stories in the series.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 LOVE THIS AUTHOR. 24 décembre 2013

Kathy Reichs has to be one of my favorite authors of all time, and I must say, that says something. Out of all the books I have read, hers always stand out, even years after me reading them. "Virals" is no exception.
This book, presumably along with the rest of its series, is a notch down from her Temperance Brennan novels, which are of a much higher reading level. Even with that said, I think any teen or adult with an interest in anthropology and mysteries should read this book, or and of Reich's for that matter. She did a lovely job of incorporating the "Virals" aspect without making it too similar to "Twilight" or many other YA novels. This book is not to be compared with them, as it is of its own class.
Reich's sense of humor has to be one of my favorites, and I think you have to read her novels to understand what I mean by that. She does a lovely job of balancing the seriousness of the novel with her humor, providing a lovely balance for the readers to enjoy. Her sentence structuring is beautiful, and her vocabulary usage matches the reading level for this piece as a whole. She doesn't go overboard with it to confuse younger readers, but uses enough as not to "dumb it up."
Although I could go on much longer about her writing and how much I love it, I will simply conclude with you should purchase this book. I doubt you'll regret it, and you'll probably find yourself in a similar situation as me right now: trying desperately to get your hands on the next books. I recommend this to anyone who has read the Temperance Brennan novels, or any fan of "Bones", or even someone who simply is a fan of mystery. READ THIS. You will not regret it, I PROMISE YOU.

Kathy Reichs can write and I have no doubt that teens would find this a very interesting read. I had a hard time getting beyond the idea that it was a young adult book -- it felt like it and I never got wrapped up in the story. I also found it hard to believe the virus/DNA thing. I can believe that something can get into our DNA but not necessarily this way and not to where it gives a person 'super powers.' And then all the sloppy clues and clueless adults. Didn't buy any of it. So while I enjoyed Reichs' writing, I couldn't enjoy this as much as her Temperance Brennan books.
