5.0 étoiles sur 5 True introduction to PROGRAMMING, in languages that have real world value. 3 mars 2016
Par L8rgator - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
I got this book to help teach someone else programming skills. As an introduction to programming in general it is excellent. It goes through the content with the flow that keeps it interesting and engaging. It covers concepts important to becoming a programmer as much as it does the actual code, which is what I was looking for. If you are looking for a reference manual for PHP, HTML, or mySQL then this is probably not the book for you. It goes beyond the basics of programming in these languages ( as well as briefly describes how similar concepts/syntax works in other languages), to give the student enough skills to start real programming. But it does not go over things like every built in PHP function, html5 in depth details, etc. This is a learning book, not a reference guide.

This book is formatted much like a text book, so if you're looking for colorful pictures and bold asides with fun tips and things like that, you will be disappointed. It instead has lots of complete, easy to follow code, preceded by algorithms, requirements, and lots of information to make it easy to follow. There are easy review questions at the end of the chapter, and then great practice exercises that increase in difficulty. Plus there are power point and Flash tutorials to go with it online, and a CD ( I haven't cracked that open yet so I can't comment on it) . It has good indexes and appendices, and a detailed table of contents. I have the third edition, which has OOP Included. This is probably the best resource I've seen to describe OOP simply and repetitively, although I'd be interested in seeing this chapter expanded in future versions - since encountering this type of code in the wild can be pretty intimidating for new programmers.

My introductory to programming courses in Pascal way back when . I can honestly say that I would have found this path much more interesting at the time. Also far more real world useful. And it's definitely something where my friend can sit and read and learn on his own, without out a lot of my assistance. The only downside is that the book is actually priced like a textbook :( . It's worth the price, but nobody wants to spend that much on a book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Slow introduction, as it should be. 27 août 2013

If you are interested in the slow version, this is the book. Programming takes time. This book takes the time to explain everything you'll want to know. No "learn programming in 30 days" snake oil like you see online, as anything worth learning isn't only going to take thirty days. If you're in it for the long haul this book is for you.

Having just finished the book recently, I am pressed to say..that this is the best programming intro I have read. I like many tried learning through free websites online, simple documentation you'll find on wiki and google but Mike O'kane nailed the art of teaching the fundamentals. I cannot stress how important it is that whatever textbook you choose to learn, it has to have exercises at the end of each lesson...and this book contains SEVERAL per chapter. It really solidifies the concepts. I have seen people learn complete programming languages and their required syntax and not know what to do with them. It's true, if you really want to learn how to program and well it takes time and constant effort, not in 30 days! It's simply not possible. If your interested in making iOS applications and are thinking, "no I need to learn obj-c"...let me just tell you now that before you can even read a book on ob-c you need to have learned the basics of general programming and object oriented programming. This is the guide that'll do that for you. I am very happy I bought and read this book. I am not a paid reviewer, nor am I affiliated in any way. I am just a programming enthusiast with a fun hobby. You will not regret it, in fact if your like me you carry it around just in case you want to refresh on something. I am currently halfway through learning objective c through another guide and I can see how this book benefited me greatly. Bottom line, BUY THE BOOK.

Thanks MIKE O'KANE!
5.0 étoiles sur 5 THE book for beginners! 12 février 2015

This is a fantastic textbook on an introduction to programming. I have worked as a pc technician for a while but had never touched programming until enrolling in a local community college's programming course. This book definitely takes you by the hand and walks you through the basics without jumping ahead too quickly. The pace is slow to moderate and makes it far easier to understand than other books in the same field.

I have already learned so much and I just started the fifth chapter. This is absolutely a must have in your collection.
