Two thousand miles and a world away from his childhood, he is a small-town fish floundering in the depths of a large, hyper-liberal pond. Caught between the prosaic values of his rural hometown and the intellectualized multicultural cosmopolitanism of Berzerkeley, the nineteen-year-old white kid is uncertain about his place until one disastrous party brings him three idiosyncratic best friends: Louis, a “kung-fu comedian" from California; Candice, an earnest do-gooder claiming Native roots from Iowa; and Charlie, an introspective inner-city black teen from Chicago. They dub themselves the “4 Little Indians.”
But everything changes in the group’s alternative history class, when D’aron lets slip that his hometown hosts an annual Civil War reenactment, recently rebranded “Patriot Days.” His announcement is met with righteous indignation, and inspires Candice to suggest a “performative intervention” to protest the reenactment. Armed with youthful self-importance, makeshift slave costumes, righteous zeal, and their own misguided ideas about the South, the 4 Little Indians descend on Braggsville. Their journey through backwoods churches, backroom politics, Waffle Houses, and drunken family barbecues is uproarious to start, but will have devastating consequences.
With the keen wit of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and the deft argot of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, T. Geronimo Johnson has written an astonishing, razor-sharp satire. Over the course of 400 pages the author satirizes the ridiculous worlds of the rural south and the hyper liberal college undergraduate environment. Part fish out of water narrative, part comedy, part stream of consciousness literature, and part scathing criticism of two very different universes that somehow both exist in the same country, Welcome to Braggsville is a lot.
Some parts of it worked, and some parts of it didn't. I guess what threw me off was the overly high brow writing style and the strangely complicated structure. While the idea was interesting and made me think quite a bit, I think it could have been more successful if the language was less dense and more readable. One thing I will say, is that the climax of the book surprised me and I felt my chest drop in disbelief when I read the words.
Overall, very timely book especially considering the facts that 1. I'm a college student currently and 2. the current debate over the Confederate flag. Just wish it was more effective at communicating these thought provoking themes.
It is the story of the Four Little Indians, sophomores at UC Berkeley from disparate backgrounds who bond together freshman year when rejected from a dot party for insensitively placing their dots (indicating where the wearer wishes to be touched) on their foreheads. D’aron, through whose eyes we see, desperately sought escape from the confining atmosphere and the cruelty he received for being a smart nerd in a tiny mill town (actually a hot air factory) in the backwoods center of Georgia. Candice is the daughter of New York professors living in Iowa, and her forceful personality drives the group, although she appears so blond and delicate that all who meet her seek to protect her. Charley is a physically imposing black guy who looks like a football player but is not, a brilliant nerd from Chicago. And Louis, the source of much of the humor, is a Malaysian from the Richmond District of San Francisco with a Chinese last name who strives to become the comedian Lenny Bruce Lee. He, looking as if he could possibly be from India, actually leaves the party voluntarily to meet the others.
Inspired by a comment from D’aron in a History from Alternative Perspectives Class that his town holds a Civil War Reenactment every year, Candice decides, with the professor’s eager support, that the group must go to D’aron’s hometown to stage a performative intervention, i.e. a mock lynching, to desanitize the reenactment, to remind the participants that the Old South was inextricably linked to the violence and horror of slavery. It doesn’t go well.
At that point, the tone shifts. The rest is a beautifully written but chilling coming of age story. Unforgettable, but not pleasant. Still, this is an important work and deserves wide reading and consideration. Highly recommended
