5.0 étoiles sur 5 Bigger and better than the previous model. 3 septembre 2008

WEST BEND made something very similar to this many years ago (like 10 or maybe 15 years ago?), ye old model number 40005. We liked them so well we kept two in our kitchen. One day, one finally stopped working (and it wasn't merely the battery). The other has developed a key bounce (typical of the technology).

SO, we tried a couple of those nasty 'press hold and wait (ho hum) until it gets there' timers that are (apparently) so popular (because those are all we could find around town) and we couldn't stand them. Thankfully, I found these on Amazon, the new model 40005X.

DIFFERENCES between the old and new models include: a) old used hearing-aid sized battery, new uses AAA. b) Old limited to 99 min and 99 seconds (4 digits), new can time up to 99 hours, 99 min, 99 seconds (6 digits). c) new has larger buttons! and larger display! d) old timer could only count down, new counts-down or counts up from zero. e) new is slightly larger and stands at 90 degrees on the battery compartment (as shown) or leans back to an easy to read (perhaps) 55-50 degrees on a fold-out clip. old couldn't stand at 90 degrees. f) old and new have the same volume. g) as I recall, the old model's magnet was too weak to hold it to the fridge, but new model's magnet is larger. (Our remaining old model no longer has a magnet; it fell off the fridge early on in its life and the magnet popped off -- I kid you not. I haven't dropped the new model yet, but it looks sturdier). Like someone else said, you'd have to take it off the fridge and hold it in your hand to set the timer. (We're used to leaving them on the counter).

USAGE EXAMPLEs: To set the timer to 4 hours, 30 minutes, press 4, 3, 0, 0, 0, and start. To count up, press stop/reset to zero the display (unless it is already zero) and then press start. (Great for the BBQ).

UPDATED Oct 21, 2008 - OHHHH NOOOO! One of the two units developed a problem with the display after only a little more than a month of use! The left-hand column for the minutes digit started flickering, and now it won't display! (i.e., It can't display a 1 in the minutes digit). New battery didn't help. Still works, just annoying. I guess they don't make them like they used to. (Made in China)

UPDATED Jul 13, 2009 - Regarding the unit that developed a problem with the display? I tightened the screws on the back cover plate and the minutes digit works perfectly again. We're so happy with this unit, we just ordered two more. (To use in our offices)

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good single alarm timer 2 janvier 2017

I would prefer a multiple time timer but couldn't find one that looked like it would do what I wanted. This was a replacement for the exact same timer I purchased a while back. The other one still works but I knocked it off the counter a couple timed and the spring operated back finally broke off. This timer works great as a single set timer. Counts both up and down and goes up to 99hrs. 59 minutes and 59 seconds. The alarm is loud enough for me but I can see how some people might have difficulty hearing it if it's noisy. The numbers are large enough to see, even if you have some difficulty with seeing. All in all, I would buy again unless a similar three timer device comes out. Westinghouse makes a three timer model but to enter times you have to zero in by moving up or down the number scale. You can't just type in your time like this one.

February 4, 2017: The alarm works well, still, but after one knock off the counter, the back piece broke off. Which means that it won't prop up or stick to the refrigerator anymore. They need to make the back piece more rugged. My first one had the same problem. If you do buy this, don't drop it or knock it off the counter, because it will more than likely break.

I bought a different timer that I had to push the button a thousand times to get to the correct time. AAAHHHHH..... I did not think that through. This one is great. The timer goes for one minute then shuts off, so if you are not in the area, be aware that you may miss it. However, the beeping is soooooo loud that you would have to be at the neighbor's to miss it. I had to open mine up and muffle the beeping.

The last West Bend time we had finally stopped working after about 12 years. The new west bend timer came quickly and it has one more timer. West bend did not make a good clipping hinge on the old or new timer. One of the under sized axle points was broken when the new timer came. This was a building flaw with the old timer also. A good pivot axle should be made of steel. As far as the function of the timer, it should do about as were as the old timer. I am sure that West Bend knows of this problem. I can not afford to send this item back to get another timer with the same potential problem. This timer is easy to use for most cooking needs.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great timer, though it requires 2 hands to use at times 30 mars 2017

Great timer - my only complaint is that with the magnet position on the back, when you hit the stop/start/reset buttons, it knocks it off the stove (where it's magnetically hanging). I have to use 2 hands to turn it off because pushing it on the left side knocks the magnetic hold loose. When I'm trying to put on oven mits and turn off the timer quickly to get stuff out of the oven, I don't really like having to stop and fiddle with using 2 hands to stop its beeping.

That being said, every other timer I found before this one didn't have a reset button and had to count up to its max before returning to zero. Who ever though that was a good idea... never used a timer. So the fact that this one HAS a reset button and number buttons is an automatic WIN in my book!!
