I did not know of Katie Quinn Davies's blog before buying this book, I bought it purely off the reviews and the cover shot.
Since buying the book I visit her blog regularly and am amazed at the talent Katie has in that she writes the recipes, cooks, styles and photographs the food, simply awesome!
I also see that she is a regular contributor to Australian food magazines which is a huge recommendation in itself!
As to the food, well I love home cooking and entertaining and "What Katie Ate" ticks all the boxes for me, the recipes are fantastic, everything
I have cooked so far has been a huge hit with friends and family, my 3 favourites so far are the "Creamy Macaroni Bake" page 155,
"Pearl Barley Salad with Harissa Spiced Chicken" page 85 and "Katie's Fish Pie" page 188. As to the photography and style of the book, I
think the realness of the pictures is superb they make you want to cook the food straight away and I really like the old feel of he book, like I have had it for years and years.
I really hope that this is the first of many cookbooks to come from Katie Quinn Davies.

You MUST buy this cook book! It got me so inspired that I made seven recipes in seven days and they have all been delicious! This is not your run-of-the-mill pretentious cook book, it's recipes that have been lovingly put together and are easy enough to cook. Katie says that each recipe has been tried and tested and it must be true because everything I've made so far has turned out just like the picture (who hasn't been disappointed by a dish that fails and wasted ingredients because the recipe was wrong!). The best thing about this book is that it's home cooking at it's best and the photography is so beautiful. The only difficult part is choosing which recipe to cook! I'm working my way cooking through this book. Trust me, you'll love it!

I can't begin to convey the total esthetic and culinary delight that this book is. I've been following Katie's blog, and have been swooning at her incredibly original and endlessly inventive creations. There is no other food stylist OR photographer as good as her -- and I work in the industry. Usually it would take 2 geniuses to create work of this caliber -- an incredible stylist and a great photographer. The fact that Katie can play both roles, when in fact she's a graphic designer by training, is a testament to her enormous genius and talent. My favorite photograph is of the Carrot cakes with cointreau-soaked sultanas -- cupcakes on a cake stand with a long precious drool of syrup juuuust about to drop off the edge of the cake stand. Photo perfection.

The design is also immaculate; attention has been paid to the tiniest detail -- recipes are numbered and categorized; the typefaces are beautifully organic and reminiscent of recipe cards that one has had and used for years -- scans of old checkered paper back several of the recipe pages, giving a warm, homey feel to the book as if we're being let in on a long-kept family secret.

The recipes are also thoroughly enthralling... They range from fairly easy (Blood Orange, Mango and Peach Granita) to more involved but very rewarding (Roast Pork with Apple, Apricot and Pistachio Stuffing). Needless to say, the photographs make me want to lick the pages AND give me the desire to try all the recipes, though -- pray God -- not all at once.

As an art director I often buy cookbooks with no intention of cooking, just for the esthetic delight. This is definitely THE book of any I own or have seen, that offers the MOST culinary / kitchen-y rapture to the eye. It doesn't get any better than this for food photography. Get it while you can. Even if you're feeling lazy, you'll be seduced to try these recipes before you can stop yourself.

So I got the book and I have to say, I'm blown away. The level of excellence is outstanding. The recipes are delicious, the photography is stunning and the design is perfect. It's not too much of a stretch to say that this book has replaced my trusty Jamie one as my new favorite. Plus content wise, it's packed to the brim. Every page is a treat to look at, with little gems to discover.

Buy this book if you LOVE AMAZING RECIPES

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The best kind of Food Porn 13 octobre 2012

I'd stumbled about for a review title and finally went with my first thought: Food Porn.

I have never seen a book quite like this one... I still have to stop myself from reaching out and trying to grab the food in the pictures. You should hear my stomach growling. *sigh*

Without a doubt this is the most attractive cookbook that I've seen in ages. It's a large book done in a very casual friendly style, all beiges and darker colors, with a very retro typewriter style font. I feel like I'm viewing a close friend(Hemmingway? ;-)'s food journal, complete with stained pages. It is rife with wonderful color pictures, most zoomed in so that the food is pictured life-sized. Hence the difficulty with my self-control; I've never wanted to eat a book before. A+++++ on the styling.

(The book is broken down into: Introduction; Tips & Tricks; Breakfasts; Lunches; Salads; Canapes & Drinks; Dinners; Sides & Sauces; Desserts; Thank you!; and an index.)

As for the recipes themselves: I've already marked out several. I'm a vegetarian, but I do cook meat for the carnivores in my family; there are recipes for all of us here. Colm's Soup (an amped-up tomato soup) had me drooling. The Couscous Salad with Slow-roasted Tomatoes, Chickpeas and Eggs is, colorwise, Christmas on a plate. The Beef and Guinness Pie is on my list to make for my brother-in-law. The Roast Pork with Apple, Apricot and Pistachio Stuffing is a holiday dinner (for the carnivores :-) option, with the Pumpkin Ravioli with Brown-Butter Sauce and Roasted Pecans for the vegetarians. Or maybe Jill's Veggie Roll. Mmmmm.

Ah, spoiled for choices.

All I can add is that I can't stress enough that you *shouldn't* touch this book if you're hungry. Trust me, the pictures look so real that you'll drive yourself crazy. Oooh! Kate's Irish Mash. Sorry. It's a beautiful book with recipes that I can actually see myself using; perfection.
